A Victorian house in Eureka

Restoration Hardware began with one man’s renovation.

RH started life as Restoration Hardware, in Eureka, California. English Wikipedia says Stephen Gordon founded the business in 1979 while restoring a Victorian home, when he could not find affordable, good-quality hardware and fixtures for the work. The Takeout gave the same year and town in an article of 26 October 2022. Gordon himself put the start slightly later: the Wall Street Transcript, introducing an interview with him published on 15 June 2000, said he founded the company in 1980, and in the interview he dated it to the early 1980s. The sources differ, and both dates are given here.

Wikipedia says the company grew slowly, in Northern California and in Boston, before raising outside capital from Cardinal Investments, which let it expand faster. It became a public company in 1998. The original store stood in Old Town Eureka; Wikipedia records that it was among the stores slated to close in 2008, after the American housing bubble burst.

The leadership changed in the early 2000s. In 2001, Wikipedia says, Gary Friedman joined Restoration Hardware as chief executive from Williams-Sonoma, the San Francisco group behind Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn, at a time when the company was looking for fresh capital. Gordon left in 2005 to become chief executive of the Sundance Catalog Company, the business associated with Robert Redford. In June 2008 the private-equity firm Catterton Partners took the company private; Wikipedia gives the date as 18 June 2008, and says a baby-and-child line was launched the same year.

RH returned to the stock market in 2012, when it held a new initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker RH. The company is headquartered in Corte Madera, California, the address given in its annual filings, and sells through its stores, its printed books and online.

Galleries, not shops, and books, not catalogues.

The shift that shaped the present identity came around 2010. Wikipedia says that in September 2010 company representatives announced a move further up-market, towards furniture “gallery” offerings at higher prices that would set the brand apart from competitors such as Pottery Barn, and that locations began adding the word “Gallery” to their names. In its annual report for the fiscal year ending in early 2019, the company described its Galleries as “showrooms for our brand”, and listed the assortments they carry: RH Interiors, Modern, Baby & Child, Teen and Outdoor.

The same filing explains the printed side of the identity. RH says it produces a series of catalogues that it calls Source Books to show its range. Wikipedia lists a Small Spaces line of scaled-down furniture created in 2012, a 2014 Small Spaces source book showing smaller homes in the United States and Europe, and an Objects of Curiosity source book of character pieces and artefacts released in 2013, the same year as a tableware line. The books themselves became part of the story: Wikipedia records that Time magazine criticised the Source Book for its length and the paper it used, and that the company answered that combining its books into one package reduced its carbon footprint.

The buildings matter as much as the books. On 7 March 2013, Wikipedia says, RH opened a gallery in Boston’s Back Bay inside an 1864 brick and brownstone building on Berkeley Street. In May the same year the company acquired the first edition of Rain Room by the art collective Random International, with exclusive rights to show it in North America, and loaned the work to the Museum of Modern Art in New York from mid-May to July 2013.

The goods themselves are mostly made by others. In its 2019 annual filing RH said that it primarily contracts with third-party vendors to manufacture its merchandise, and that most of its products were sourced in Asia. Wikipedia adds that the company has partnered with artisans and designers in producing its lines.

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group are American home-goods store chains: retailers that fill their shelves with decorative objects, furniture, linens, kitchenware and seasonal pieces, sometimes made to their own specification and sometimes bought from other makers. Some sell at full price under a house name; others buy surplus stock and resell it at a discount, so the goods change from week to week. Between those two models sit chains that mix their own lines with branded stock.

For a chain like this, the visual identity sits mostly outside the products. It lives in the sign above the entrance, the printed circular or catalogue, the price tickets and shopping bags, and the way aisles and displays are arranged. Because such chains are regularly sold, merged, restructured or closed, the history behind each sign deserves a plain account: who founded the business and where, which companies have owned it since, and what became of its stores.

Each guide keeps what independent, dated sources record apart from what a company says about itself, follows its ownership and store history over time, and says clearly where a claim rests only on the company’s own account.

RH

Two letters, restaurants and an English country house.

The shorter name arrived in stages. The Takeout reported in 2022 that the brand changed its name to simply RH in 2012, a move that reflected its expansion beyond specialty furnishings into luxury home decor, publishing and, later, restaurants. The corporation followed a few years later: in a filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission dated 15 December 2016, Restoration Hardware Holdings, Inc. said it had amended its certificate of incorporation to change its name to “RH”, effective 1 January 2017, and that its shares would keep trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the same ticker.

Food and lodging are now part of the brand. Wikipedia says RH opened a hospitality concept, the 3 Arts Club Café in Chicago, in 2015; The Takeout placed that opening in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighbourhood. The company’s annual filing for fiscal 2018 described an integrated hospitality experience in its new Galleries, with cafés, wine vaults and barista bars. In 2022, Wikipedia says, RH opened the RH Guesthouse, a hotel in New York City.

The brand reached Europe in June 2023, when it opened The Gallery at Aynhoe Park, in Northamptonshire, England, with restaurants and lounges alongside the furniture, according to Wikipedia. In Canada, Wikipedia records a full-line design gallery at Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto.

For a design guide, RH shows how a retailer can rename itself around an initialism and let architecture, printed books and hospitality carry the identity. Compare the company Gary Friedman came from in our Williams-Sonoma brand guidelines and the rival RH set out to distance itself from in our Pottery Barn brand guidelines. For this guide we use charcoal, greige and Belgian linen with a classical serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
