Shanghai and Hong Kong
A business that began on the Shanghai waterfront in 1919.
AIA’s story starts with an American in China. English Wikipedia says Cornelius Vander Starr, who had worked in vehicle insurance in San Francisco and in the steamship business in Japan, moved to Shanghai and on 19 December 1919 founded a small company called American Asiatic Underwriters. It covered fire and marine risks and acted as an agent for other American insurers. Two years later, the same article says, Starr used funds from that business to found Asia Life Insurance, and in 1927 both companies moved into 17 The Bund, a building Starr had bought as a centre for banking and insurance.
The initials came later. English Wikipedia says Starr set up International Assurance Company in Shanghai in April 1931 with British and Chinese partners, and that AIA opened a branch in Singapore in 1933 that also served Malaya. After the Second World War and the change of government in mainland China, the headquarters moved to Hong Kong, which has been the company’s base ever since. In 1970, the same source says, AIA became a subsidiary of the New York-based American International Group, formed as a holding company for Starr’s businesses.
The Shanghai link returned in 1992. English Wikipedia says that on 25 September 1992 AIA was granted a licence to operate in China again, and that the company marketed the event as a “return home”. For a brand whose name begins with the word Asia, the story of leaving the Bund and coming back to it has stayed part of how the company presents itself.
The modern AIA is a separate listed company. After the 2008 financial crisis, English Wikipedia says, AIG prepared AIA for a stock market listing, and AIA held its initial public offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 29 October 2010. AIG sold its remaining shareholding on 21 December 2012, leaving AIA Group as an independent business with no parent.
Colour
A name on a Premier League shirt.
Outside Asia, the AIA name has been carried above all on football shirts. On 19 August 2013 the Sri Lankan newspaper Daily FT reported that AIA had agreed to become Tottenham Hotspur’s cup shirt sponsor for the 2013/14 season, with its name on the front of the club’s shirts in the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League. The cup shirt was due to debut against Dinamo Tbilisi on 22 August. The paper said the deal supported AIA’s new brand position as “The Real Life Company”.
Six months later the arrangement grew. On 13 February 2014 Inside World Football reported that Tottenham had signed a five-year shirt deal with the Hong Kong-based insurer, which would become the club’s principal sponsor from the following season; at that point Hewlett-Packard was the shirt sponsor for Premier League matches. The Daily FT said the agreement was celebrated at a signing ceremony in Hong Kong attended by AIA chief executive Mark Tucker and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, and that the AIA brand would feature on Spurs shirts in all competitions until the end of the 2018/19 season.
The partnership was then extended again, with Shanghai as the stage. Asia Advisers Network reported on 30 July 2019 that AIA and Tottenham had extended their deal to the end of the 2026/27 season, recalling that AIA became shirt partner in all competitions in 2014/15 and Global Principal Partner in 2017 during a club tour to Hong Kong. The announcement was made in Shanghai during AIA’s centennial year, and players visited the company’s building on the Bund. The same report tied the deal to AIA’s brand promise of the time, with the name staying on men’s, women’s and academy shirts.
Typography
Insurers, banks and their marks.
American financial brands tend to draw on a small set of visual ideas, and most of them are older than modern advertising. The first is the surname. Many firms in banking, insurance and investment carry the names of the people who started them, and a wordmark built from two family names reads as a signature, a promise that someone stands behind the account. Over time those names are often shortened to initials or a single word, and the letterforms are redrawn to look calm at small sizes on statements, cards and phone screens.
The second idea is the emblem. Eagles, shields, umbrellas and other protective shapes appear again and again because they are easy to read and suggest cover and steadiness without a word of copy. A plain box or square, filled with one strong colour, does similar work for firms that want to look restrained rather than heraldic.
The third idea belongs to advertising rather than the logo. Insurers in particular lean on recurring characters: animated mascots, invented animals and actors who return in campaign after campaign, so that a voice or a face becomes as recognisable as the mark itself. Together, names, emblems and familiar spokespeople give a set of abstract services something people can picture and remember.

AIA
From the front of the shirt to the training kit.
The shirt deal has a set end. Marketech APAC reported on 4 November 2025 that AIA would remain Tottenham’s front-of-shirt sponsor until the end of the 2026/27 season and would then become the club’s Global Training Partner from July 2027 to June 2032. Under the new agreement, the report said, the AIA name would appear on the training wear of all Spurs teams and on coaches’ clothing, as well as on LED signage at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the partnership would continue to cover both the men’s and the women’s squads.
The same report linked the partnership to the company’s AIA One Billion initiative, launched in 2022. AIA Group chief marketing officer Stuart A. Spencer said the change reflected a shared belief in “the power of sport to inspire healthier living”, and Tottenham’s chief revenue officer Ryan Norys spoke of the two brands having “made history together”. Since the partnership began in 2013, Marketech APAC said, Spurs coaches had led AIA football clinics for young people across Asia.
Behind the football, the brand has been carried by a set of slogans. “The Real Life Company” framed the 2013 and 2014 deals, according to the Daily FT, and the brand promise of that period framed the 2019 extension, according to Asia Advisers Network. Both lines put the emphasis on health and everyday life rather than on money.
For a design guide, AIA shows how a short set of initials, placed on the front of a football shirt for more than a decade, can carry a company’s name to audiences far from its home city. Compare AIG, the former parent that shares its Shanghai roots, and Prudential, another insurer with a long history in Asia. For this guide we use red, deep red and pale blush with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
