Two sister companies

Aichi Kogyo and Shinkawa Kogyo.

Aisin is a name made from two older company names. The business dates its history to 1943, and the International Directory of Company Histories, in its 2003 entry on Aisin Seiki, credits Kiichiro Toyoda, the founder of the Toyota Group, with establishing the original company. In 1945, the directory says, the business switched its production to sewing machines and automotive parts, both of them goods that were then in short supply.

The first half of the later name comes from that company’s next identity, Aichi Kogyo, named after Aichi Prefecture. Aisin’s corporate timeline dates the rename to 1945, while the directory gives 1949, and Japanese Wikipedia records that a new Aichi Kogyo was established in 1949. Aisin’s timeline lists home-use sewing machines among its products from 1946, followed by clutch discs, oil pumps, door latches and bumper jacks over the next decade.

The second half comes from a sister company. Aisin’s timeline says Toshin Kokuki was established in 1945 and renamed Shinkawa Sangyo, and that in 1953 Shinkawa Sangyo became Shinkawa Kogyo. For two decades the two companies worked side by side in the Toyota Group, one under the name of a prefecture and one under the name of Shinkawa.

In 1965 they merged. The directory says Aichi Kogyo merged with Shinkawa Kogyo in that year to form Aisin Seiki Co., Ltd. Aisin’s own account says the two sister companies decided to “sink their differences to achieve common goals”, and that the merger was meant to strengthen the company’s structure and international competitiveness. Seiki, the second word of the new name, means precision machinery.

The coined word joined the two. Japanese Wikipedia says the name Aisin takes the first kanji of each partner: 愛 (ai) from Aichi Kogyo and 新 (shin) from Shinkawa Kogyo. Written in katakana as アイシン and in Latin letters as Aisin, the merged name keeps a trace of both partners in two syllables, without favouring either.

Aisin Seiki to Aisin, 2021.

Aisin Seiki soon gave its name to new companies. Aisin’s corporate history says Aisin-Warner was set up in 1969 as a joint venture with the U.S. company Borg-Warner to make automatic transmissions. The joint venture agreement ended in 1987, and in 1988 Aisin-Warner was renamed Aisin AW. Japanese Wikipedia explains that the “AW” in the new name came from the original Aisin-Warner, so the partner’s initial stayed in the name after the partnership ended.

The name also went abroad early. The International Directory of Company Histories says Aisin U.S.A. was formed in 1970 and Aisin Europe was established in Belgium in 1971; Aisin’s own history places its first overseas subsidiary in Los Angeles. The directory adds that in 1979 the Elite Sewing Machine Manufacturing Company was set up in Taiwan as a joint venture, a sign that the sewing-machine trade of the 1940s was still part of the business.

For decades the parent and its transmission subsidiary used versions of the same word. That ended with a merger. On 30 April 2020, Aisin Seiki announced that it would change its trade name. Its news release said the company would integrate its management with its subsidiary Aisin AW, and would adopt the common name “Aisin” to create a new flagship for the group. The release said the change would be put to the annual meeting of shareholders on 16 June 2020 and would take effect on 1 April 2021, under the new name AISIN CORPORATION.

Aisin’s corporate history confirms that the merger of Aisin Seiki and Aisin AW became official on 1 April 2021. With it, the word Seiki and the letters AW both dropped out of the parent’s name, leaving the two syllables coined in 1965.

The trade press reported what followed for the brand. Auto Service World wrote on 4 October 2021 that Aisin Aftermarket had announced new corporate branding, a new logo and new packaging in the Americas, after its parent merged with Aisin AW earlier that year. The new Aisin logo was being rolled out on its website and social media channels, the magazine said, and technicians would see newly designed boxes for Aisin hard parts. Larrow Kaufman, senior manager for sales and marketing, said in a statement that products in the old packaging would remain on shelves for a period during the transition.

Two partners, one coined word.

Corporate identity where the end user rarely looks

Component makers and drug companies share an odd identity problem: the people who use their work most often never see the parent name. A brake module, a sensor or a seat frame arrives inside somebody else’s car, and a medicine reaches a patient under a product name, in packaging shaped by regulators as much as by designers. The corporate mark has to work instead for engineers, buyers, investors, recruits and the towns that host the factories.

That audience shapes the names. Mergers in both sectors often produce a blended word built from the two predecessors, or a coined term with Latin or Greek roots chosen because it carries no prior meaning in any market and can be registered worldwide. Other houses keep a founder’s surname or an old place name long after the business has outgrown it.

The visible identity tends to live in plant and laboratory signage, on gatehouses, lorry livery, safety notices and campus wayfinding. Those settings favour plain wordmarks, a single corporate colour and lettering that stays legible from a distance and in a photocopied procedure sheet. Restraint here is a working requirement rather than a style choice.

Aisin

A group name and its logos.

The 2021 logo was not the first group mark of recent years. Aisin’s corporate history says that in 2015, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Aisin Group, the company introduced a new Group logo and a new Group song, and refurbished its exhibition hall, Com-Center. Japanese Wikipedia records the same anniversary changes. Eight years earlier, in 2007, Aisin’s history says, the company issued The AISIN WAY, a guideline describing how it expects employees to work and think.

After the 2021 merger the group adopted a new line. Japanese Wikipedia gives Aisin’s corporate identity, as of 2021, as “We Touch the Future”. The name itself did not change again: the parent that had been Aisin Seiki since 1965 became simply Aisin.

The company is a member of the Toyota Group and, according to English and Japanese Wikipedia, is headquartered in Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, the same town as Denso. The two companies share joint ventures as well as a home town. The International Directory of Company Histories says that in 2001 Aisin, Toyota, Sumitomo Electric Industries and Denso formed Advics for brake systems, and Aisin’s history adds that in 2019 Aisin and Denso established BluE Nexus to develop and market drive modules for electric vehicles.

The arc of the name runs in two steps. In 1965 two sister companies gave one character each to a new word. In 2021 a parent and a subsidiary that had shared that word for decades merged and kept only the word.

For a design guide, Aisin shows how a merger name can be built from one character of each partner, then cleaned of its suffixes when the group consolidates. Compare Denso, another Kariya supplier that shortened its name in 1996, and Toyota, the carmaker at the centre of the group.
