A welded brewhouse in a corner of a warehouse.

Allagash Brewing Company was founded in Portland, Maine, in 1995 by Rob Tod. The Boston Globe, in a profile published in February 2025, recorded that Tod graduated from Middlebury College in 1991 with a degree in geology, spent two years in Colorado and then went back to Middlebury to wash kegs at Otter Creek Brewing, the Vermont brewery. He moved to Maine, bought used equipment, including secondhand dairy tanks, and began brewing in April 1995.

The company’s own timeline says Tod opened in a corner of a warehouse in an industrial park, welded together a 15-barrel brewing system himself and started with a single beer. English Wikipedia gives the reason: Tod saw that German and British styles were easy to find across the United States, while Belgian-style beers were not. That single beer was Allagash White, modelled on a Belgian witbier, brewed with wheat as well as barley and spiced with Curaçao orange peel and coriander, Wikipedia says.

The start was slow. The Globe reported that the first bar to pour the beer was the Great Lost Bear in Portland, on 1 July 1995, that Tod’s handwritten ledger showed five kegs sold that August, and that for a time he was brewer, keg cleaner and salesman at once. The company’s timeline puts it gently: in 1996 drinkers were unsure about a hazy, spiced beer, and many came back once they got used to it. The name, the Globe said, came from a friend Tod asked to think of something that evoked Maine, because he did not expect to sell beer outside the state.

Tripel, bourbon barrels and a coolship.

White won its first gold medal at the World Beer Cup in 1998 and a second, at the Great American Beer Festival, in 2002, the company says. The range widened after brewer Jason Perkins joined from Vermont in 1999, according to the company’s timeline. A Tripel aged in bourbon barrels became Curieux in 2004, and in 2005 the brewery began a wild-beer programme, with Interlude as its first bottled wild beer. The Brewers Association gave Perkins its Russell Scherer award for innovation in 2016, the company says.

The best-known experiment came in 2007. English Wikipedia says Allagash was the first brewery in the United States to build a traditional coolship, the shallow open vessel in which hot wort cools and is exposed to wild yeasts for spontaneous fermentation; the company’s first beer of this kind was Coolship Resurgam. In the same year, the company says, brewing and bottling moved into a larger building next door. Many Allagash beers are bottle-conditioned, with a small dose of yeast and sugar added before bottling so that a second fermentation happens in the bottle, Wikipedia notes.

Belgium kept returning the interest. The company says it was invited to the Night of the Great Thirst festival there in 2010 and was the only American brewery at the four festivals that followed. A first canning line arrived in 2018. By February 2025 the Globe reported eight year-round beers and a workforce of about 130, with White sold in 22 states and making up more than 80 percent of sales, and cited Brewers Association figures ranking Allagash as Maine’s largest beer producer and fifteenth in the country.

The seven brands in this group are all American beer names: Busch, Natural Light, Keystone Light, Rolling Rock, Bell’s, Deschutes and Allagash. American beer brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from independent breweries that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger brewing groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a stadium bar.

A beer brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle or can than by a label, a name and the place it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its brewing or grown far beyond the town where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its beer is actually brewed and packaged.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its beer is brewed and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Allagash

An independent brewery, still led by its founder.

Allagash has stayed independent. Its website carries the Brewers Association’s Independent Craft Brewer seal and names its brewery at 50 Industrial Way in Portland, with a second tasting room, the Allagash Bungalow, in Scarborough. Tod remains at the head of the company: Beer Marketer’s Insights reported in August 2026 that a new sales director, Matt Place, would report to “Founder and President Rob Tod.” Tod also served as chair of the Brewers Association board from 2016, Brewbound reported.

Recognition has followed the founder and the brewery. Tod received the James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Wine, Beer or Spirits Professional in 2019, and the same year Allagash became a certified B Corporation, later recertifying with a higher score. Wikipedia records Great American Beer Festival Brewery of the Year awards in its size category in 2021, 2023 and 2025, and the company says White is the most-awarded witbier in the world. The company also pledged in 2017 to buy a million pounds of Maine-grown grain a year by 2021, and its year-round Sixteen Counties ale is brewed with Maine-grown grains, Wikipedia says. In 2025 the brewery marked thirty years of White with a limited throwback can.

The name needs care online. The Allagash River and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway in northern Maine are unrelated to the brewery, whose own site is allagash.com.

For a design guide, Allagash shows how a single, unfamiliar Belgian style, brewed in one Maine town, can become the anchor of a whole brand. Compare Hoegaarden, the Belgian witbier brand revived by a milkman, and Blue Moon, the American Belgian-style wheat beer. For this guide we use harbour navy, witbier straw and orange peel with a soft-contrast serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
