Stories of modern India

Bangalore Watch Company puts India’s achievements on the dial.

Bangalore Watch Company is a lesson in a country as identity. Founded around 2018 in Bengaluru by the husband-and-wife team Nirupesh Joshi and Mercy Amalraj, it is an independent, founder-owned Indian microbrand — and in early 2026 it opened its first flagship experience centre in the city.

Its identity is “stories of modern India.” Rather than lean on clichéd heritage motifs, the brand encodes real Indian institutional achievements into its dials and names: aviation, space and sport. The sharpest example is the Mach 1, with dials forged from recovered aluminium of decommissioned Indian Air Force MiG-21 jets; the Cover Drive takes its name from a cricket stroke; the Apogee is a tribute to the Indian space programme; and the Renaissance honours Bangalore’s HMT-era watchmaking. It is a deliberate, modern counter-culture to “heritage” branding.

(Honest notes: credit both founders — Joshi and Amalraj. Movements are imported Swiss (Sellita) and Japanese (Miyota), so the honest claim is “designed, engineered and assembled in Bangalore,” not “made in India.” The “space-qualified” line is the brand’s own claim. Design is in-house (no external studio), and there’s no official brand hex, so these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Bangalore Watch Company lives in an aviation-blue-and-aluminium palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Bangalore Watch Company’s identity is modern, instrument-like and proud — an ink, an aviation blue, an aluminium, a signal saffron, and a chalk. The palette pairs an aviation blue with an aluminium grey — the register of an instrument watch. It signals engineering and achievement rather than nostalgia. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is an aviation blue with an aluminium grey signals a modern instrument. Bangalore Watch Company’s world is a MiG-aluminium dial. For designers, it is a reminder that a cool, technical palette with one warm signal reads as engineered and confident — right for a modern-India brand. The takeaways: source the palette from the story (aviation, metal); add one warm signal; encode achievement in the details; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is an instrument sans — technical, modern, legible.

Bangalore Watch Company’s identity carries a technical, modern, legible spirit — instrument dials and stories of achievement. An instrument sans captures the mood: it is condensed and precise, the register of a cockpit gauge. Set in an aviation-blue-and-aluminium palette, the instrument sans feels technical and modern — exactly the personality the brand carries. It is legible rather than decorative, mirroring high-contrast instrument numerals. (Bangalore Watch Company’s real dials are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “an instrument sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: technical, modern and legible.

A country as identity

Bangalore Watch Company stands for a modern India, on the wrist.

Bangalore Watch Company is a lesson in making a country the identity. An aviation-blue-and-aluminium palette, an instrument sans and MiG-aluminium dials make modern India the whole brand — technical, proud, purposeful. The country is the differentiator. The differentiator is a stories-of-modern-India identity.

For designers and brand-builders, Bangalore Watch Company offers a clear takeaway: tell a national story through specifics, not clichés. The lessons: encode real achievements (aviation, space, cricket); use material with a story (MiG aluminium); name from the domain (Cover Drive, Apogee); and be honest about origin. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: movements are imported and the watches are assembled in Bangalore, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Bangalore Watch Company made a country the brand — proof that a modern national story can be the difference.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Bangalore Watch Company’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the brand, and it does not promote consumption. The Bangalore Watch Company name, dials and watches are trademarks/works of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and swatches); no watch or dial is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public sources (bangalorewatchco.in, Monochrome, Europa Star, Teddy Baldassarre): Bangalore Watch Company is an independent, founder-owned Indian microbrand founded around 2018 in Bengaluru by the husband-and-wife team Nirupesh Joshi and Mercy Amalraj, which opened its first flagship experience centre in early 2026. Its identity is “stories of modern India” — encoding real Indian institutional achievements into dials and names (aviation, space, sport): the Mach 1 (dials from recovered Indian Air Force MiG-21 aluminium), the Cover Drive (a cricket stroke), the Apogee (a tribute to the Indian space programme, which the brand bills as “India’s first space-qualified watch”), and the Renaissance (honouring Bangalore’s HMT-era watchmaking) — a deliberate counter-culture to clichéd heritage branding. Honest notes: both Joshi and Amalraj are co-founders; movements are imported Swiss (Sellita) and Japanese (Miyota), so the accurate claim is “designed, engineered and assembled in Bangalore” rather than “made in India”; the “space-qualified” line is the brand’s own claim; design is in-house (no external studio); and no official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
