We built what we couldn’t find

Findra makes women-first merino outdoor kit.

Findra is a lesson in an underserved audience as the whole idea. Founded around 2014 by Scottish designer Alex Feechan and based in Innerleithen, in the Scottish Borders, the brand was born from her frustration at how poorly women’s outdoor and cycling kit was designed — its line is literally “we built what we couldn’t find.”

Its brand identity is women-first, merino-led and understated — a women’s merino-wool outdoor clothing and layering system for cycling, running, hiking, wild swimming and more, in muted, heathery, Scottish-Borders-inspired colours. It’s slow fashion, built for function, fit, versatility and longevity.

(Honest notes: Findra is genuinely independent — founder-led by Alex Feechan and crowd-backed via Crowdcube. It is women-only today (it hasn’t added a men’s line). It’s largely, but not entirely, UK-made — about 60% in the UK. And there’s no official brand hex, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Findra lives in a muted heather palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Findra’s identity is muted, heathery and warm — an ink, a heather, a moss, a spiced clay, and a mustard. The palette leans on heather, moss and clay with a mustard accent — the register of the Scottish Borders and the Tweed Valley. It signals nature, calm and craft rather than technical brights. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is muted, landscape tones signal a calm, considered brand. Findra’s world is a heathery Borders hillside. For designers, it is a reminder that heather, moss and clay with a mustard pop read as natural and refined — right for a slow-fashion women’s brand. The takeaways: use muted, landscape-derived tones; add one warm accent (a mustard); and treat any single hex as unofficial — using ink for small text so the palette stays calm.

Typography

The register is a calm grotesque — considered and understated.

Findra’s identity carries a calm, considered, women-first spirit — merino craft and thoughtful design. A calm grotesque captures the mood: it is understated and confident, the register of a slow-fashion brand. Set in a muted heather palette, the calm grotesque feels considered and understated — exactly the personality Findra carries. It is quiet rather than loud, mirroring anti-trend design. (Findra’s real all-caps “FINDRA” wordmark, often set in a circular badge with a mustard accent, is a trademark we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact brand typeface is not ours to use.) Because the mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a calm grotesque spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: calm, considered and women-first.

Audience as identity

Findra stands for women-first outdoor design.

Findra is a lesson in making an underserved audience the identity. A muted heather palette, a merino layering system and a women-first mission make “we built what we couldn’t find” the whole brand — calm, considered, independent. The audience is the differentiator. The differentiator is a women-first, merino, slow-fashion identity.

For designers and brand-builders, Findra offers a clear takeaway: a gap can be a brand. The lessons: serve who others overlook (women in the outdoors); pick a core material (merino) and a system (layering by activity); and design for longevity (slow fashion, repairs). It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it’s independent and founder-led (crowd-backed), women-only, largely-but-not-all UK-made, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Findra made an underserved audience the brand — proof that a gap can be the difference.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about FINDRA’s visual identity; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, FINDRA. The FINDRA name and wordmark are trademarks of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and swatches); no logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in, never in the FINDRA logo or typeface. Facts reported from public sources (findraclothing.com): FINDRA is a Scottish outdoor and cycling apparel brand founded around 2014 by designer Alex Feechan (founder and CEO), based in Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders, positioned as women-first — a women’s merino-wool outdoor clothing and layering system (cycling, running, hiking, wild swimming, skiing and more) born from the founder’s frustration at poorly designed women’s kit, under the line “we built what we couldn’t find,” with a muted, heathery, Scottish-Borders-inspired palette and a slow-fashion, function-fit-longevity ethos. Honest notes: FINDRA is independent and founder-led (privately held and crowd-backed via Crowdcube); it is women-only today (it has not added a men’s line); its old findra.co.uk address now redirects to findraclothing.com; about 60% of production is UK-made (with roughly 30% in China), using non-mulesed Australian merino, so it is “largely UK-made,” not entirely; it is not a certified B Corp; and no official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
