Clark and Grand

A Lettuce Entertain You dinner house.

Maggiano’s Little Italy opened in Chicago in November 1991, at the corner of Clark Street and Grand Avenue in the River North neighbourhood. The company says so on its own history page, and English Wikipedia gives the opening day as 11 November 1991. The restaurant was a project of Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, the Chicago restaurant group led by Richard Melman, and English Wikipedia describes it as an expansion of the group’s Italian division.

The name looks Italian but has a Chicago origin. English Wikipedia says Melman named the restaurant after Marvin Magid, his business partner. The Chicago Tribune reported on 31 March 1987 that Magid, a senior partner and executive vice-president of Lettuce Entertain You, had died; the paper said he had joined the firm at its R.J. Grunts restaurant in 1974, become a partner in 1975 and been in charge of its Avanzare, Scoozi and Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba restaurants. Melman told the Tribune that Magid had been “a member of our family as well.”

The idea behind the restaurant was a period piece. English Wikipedia quotes the company’s history as describing the concept as “re-creating the classic pre-World War II dinner house featuring family size portions.” The company’s current history page tells the same story in warmer terms, describing dishes “coaxed out of Italian grandmothers, mothers, and aunts” and diners celebrating “family-style” over Italian-American food.

According to English Wikipedia, a second restaurant followed in Oak Brook and another in Skokie, both in the Chicago suburbs, and in 1994 the brand opened outside Illinois for the first time. The company’s own history puts the sequence more simply: after a successful first opening in Chicago, it says, more followed.

The Tribune’s 1987 report shows the kind of company that created the brand. Lettuce Entertain You ran a portfolio of differently themed restaurants in Chicago, from R.J. Grunts to Avanzare, Scoozi and the Spanish-style Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba, each with its own name and its own look.

Family style as an identity.

For Maggiano’s, the service style is part of the brand. The company says its restaurants were built around eating “family-style,” with large dishes passed around the table, and its history page says guests waited hours to do so when the Chicago restaurant opened. The company’s stated purpose today is “to bring people together to celebrate the love of family and friends,” and it tells its story through grandmothers, Sunday dinners and “nonna’s casa” rather than through a chef or a founder’s portrait.

Recent owners have tried to sharpen that sense of occasion. Nation’s Restaurant News reported in September 2024 that Dominique Bertolone, named president of Maggiano’s in December 2023 after leading food and beverage at MGM Resorts in Las Vegas, wanted to “democratize luxury” at the brand. In May 2024, the magazine said, Maggiano’s introduced a theatrical cocktail programme, including an Old-Fashioned brought to the table inside a box of oak smoke and opened in front of the guest, and worked with a master sommelier on a list of wines by the glass. Bertolone told the magazine that guests were looking for “unique experiences” and “creating moments,” and that he had begun his time at the brand with a listening tour of staff and guests. “Today, it’s not only about food and beverage,” he said; “it’s about the overall experience.”

The company frames its culture in the same terms. Its website says Maggiano’s has “one main goal: to make people feel special,” and describes an attitude of “we over me” among its staff, whom it calls teammates. English Wikipedia adds that in February 2017 the chain introduced a brunch menu served every day of the week.

Typography

Signs, rooms and menus.

A themed or full-service restaurant chain carries its identity in more than a logo. The name on the street sign, the lettering on the door, the layout of the dining room, the objects on the walls and the design of the printed menu all work together. For a chain, the same set of cues has to travel from one site to the next, so the brand is often set down as a repeatable kit of signage, colours, fixtures and furniture rather than a single building.

Themed restaurants push that kit further. Their interiors may borrow from a place, a period or a pastime, using collected objects, built scenery, lighting and sound to carry the theme, while full-service chains tend to lean on materials, table settings and menu typography to set a tone. Ownership matters here too, because a restaurant name can pass between companies while the sign above the door stays much the same.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, and how its name, signage, interiors and menus have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Maggiano’s Little Italy

Owned by Brinker International since 1995.

The restaurant did not stay with its founders for long. English Wikipedia says Brinker International bought the concept from Lettuce Entertain You in August 1995, and the company’s own history page gives the year as 1995, saying the purchase followed the opening of further restaurants after the Chicago original. Brinker International has owned Maggiano’s since 1995. Nation’s Restaurant News described it in September 2024 as a division of Brinker and the “upscale Italian sibling” to Dallas-based Chili’s Grill & Bar.

Under Brinker the brand has been reworked more than once. In August 2025 Nation’s Restaurant News reported that Bertolone was stepping down as president and that Brinker’s chief executive, Kevin Hochman, would oversee Maggiano’s on an interim basis. Hochman said Brinker was applying more of the turnaround approach it had used at Chili’s, and he credited Bertolone with the reimaged Orlando Maggiano’s, which he called the first reimage restaurant in the Maggiano’s turnaround. Brinker also named Rich Kissel, from its Chili’s operations, as chief operating officer of the Italian brand, the magazine reported. Hochman told the magazine that the approach at Chili’s had been to lean into the things that had made the brand popular and to make them relevant again. Describing Maggiano’s in its growth years, he spoke of “abundant portions and an inviting atmosphere where you’d have a great time with friends and family”

For a design guide, Maggiano’s Little Italy shows how a service style and a period setting can carry a brand more than any single mark. Compare California Pizza Kitchen and The Cheesecake Factory, two other full-service American chains. For this guide we use Chianti red, parchment and olive with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
