A red sun and a blue bar — and a name that’s really just a Tokyo stock-exchange nickname.

A sun over a name

Nissan’s classic logo is a rising sun.

Nissan’s long-standing logo was a simple, meaningful mark: the “NISSAN” name on a horizontal bar across a circle. Contrary to a common description, the circle was red — a rising sun, a proud reference to Japan (the “land of the rising sun”) — and the bar was blue, carrying the wordmark, with blue evoking reliability and trust. The rising-sun imagery gave the brand a clear, optimistic, distinctly Japanese identity and a sense of dawning possibility. (You’ll sometimes read that the horizontal bar stands for a founder’s motto like “sincerity brings success,” but that slogan is only loosely sourced — treat it as lore rather than confirmed fact.) In 2020, Nissan modernised to a sleek, flat, monochrome version of the mark. Our homage nods to a rising sun and bar.

02

A name from the stock exchange

Nissan’s name has an unglamorous origin.

The name “Nissan” has a surprisingly prosaic origin. It comes from an abbreviation of “Nihon Sangyo” (Nippon Sangyo) — the name of the holding company (led by Yoshisuke Aikawa) of which the car business was part. On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Nihon Sangyo was abbreviated to “Ni-San” — and that stock-ticker shorthand became the brand name “Nissan.” The company grew from these industrial roots (and the earlier Datsun marque, which Nissan absorbed and continued): the predecessor firm was established in 1933, and Nissan Motor Co. was formally named in 1934. It’s a nice reminder that not every iconic brand name is the product of poetic invention — sometimes it’s literally a financial abbreviation that stuck. The rising-sun logo then gave that abbreviation a meaningful, patriotic, optimistic visual identity.

03

Reliability, then reinvention

Nissan modernised for a global era.

For much of its history, Nissan’s brand stood for reliable, practical, good-value Japanese cars — solid engineering and dependability, symbolised by that trustworthy blue bar. But as the global market evolved, Nissan worked to modernise and broaden its image, embracing more innovation, technology and design flair (electric vehicles like the pioneering Leaf, performance icons like the GT-R, and a push into new automotive technology). The 2020 flat-logo redesign — simplifying the rising-sun mark into a clean, minimal, monochrome, screen-friendly form — was part of that modernisation, signalling a more contemporary, forward-looking, digital-age Nissan while keeping the recognisable circle-and-bar structure. It’s a classic example of a legacy brand carefully evolving its identity: honouring the heritage of the original mark (the rising sun, the circle and bar) while streamlining it for a modern, global, digital world.

04

Heritage, meaning and modernisation

Nissan shows careful evolution of a legacy mark.

Nissan offers several branding lessons. First, the value of a meaningful symbol: the rising sun gave the brand a clear, optimistic, distinctly Japanese identity, and the blue bar signalled reliability — simple imagery that communicated real ideas about the brand’s origin and values. A logo grounded in genuine meaning (national identity, trust) is stronger than a purely decorative one. Second, an honest reminder about brand-name origins: “Nissan” is just an abbreviation of a holding company’s name (Nihon Sangyo, “Ni-San” on the stock exchange) — proof that great brand names don’t always begin as poetry.

Third, the art of modernising a legacy identity: the 2020 flat redesign shows how to update a heritage mark for a new era — simplifying and flattening it for digital, screen-first use while preserving the recognisable structure and meaning. That balance (fresh and modern, yet still clearly “Nissan”) is exactly what a careful rebrand should achieve. And fourth, a note on accuracy: getting the details right (the sun is red, the bar blue; the “sincerity” slogan is lore) matters for a credible telling. The takeaway is that a strong legacy brand grounds its identity in meaningful symbolism, can carry an unglamorous name to greatness through consistent use, and stays relevant by modernising thoughtfully — evolving the mark without discarding what makes it recognisable. Nissan’s red sun and blue bar did exactly that for nearly ninety years.

The Nissan marks are trademarks of their owner — the graphics here are deliberately not those (an abstract rising sun and bar). The classic logo had a red circle (a rising sun, for Japan) with a blue bar (reliability) carrying the wordmark; the “sincerity brings success” slogan is loosely sourced lore. “Nissan” comes from an abbreviation of Nihon Sangyo (“Ni-San” on the Tokyo Stock Exchange); the predecessor firm was established 1933 and Nissan Motor Co. named in 1934.
