On Brand Guidelines
Two letters, a light-switch flick and hollow ‘clouds’ — Swiss-engineered running, switched on.

Two constants: a Swiss monochrome palette and a clean, geometric sans. Abstract homage — not the On wordmark or CloudTec sole.
Switched on
On built a brand from two letters, a light-switch flick and a cushioning idea.
On’s identity is disarmingly simple: the two letters “O” and “n” set in a clean, geometric sans-serif, black on white (or reversed). The distinctive detail is a small upward “flick” or uptick at the top-right of the letterform — most readings describe it as an old-style light switch flipped “on,” evoking the “switched-on” feeling and a sense of upward lift and momentum (it’s often called arrow-like, but it’s really that switch/uptick). The wordmark is custom/proprietary lettering, so treat any font-spotter name as unverified. It’s a mark that fits Swiss design perfectly: minimal, precise and quietly clever.
On’s signature is a shoe technology: CloudTec, its patented sole cushioning made of hollow pod elements — “Clouds” — that compress on impact for a soft landing, then lock together for a firm, explosive push-off (the “soft landing, firm takeoff” sensation), working alongside a Helion superfoam and a Speedboard propulsion plate. The flagship shoe is literally called the “Cloud.” On was founded in January 2010 in Zurich, Switzerland, by three people: Olivier Bernhard (a retired Swiss pro and multiple Ironman/duathlon world champion, who co-developed the first prototype), David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. Tennis champion Roger Federer joined as an investor and partner in 2019 (after leaving Nike) — an important distinction: Federer is an investor and partner, not a founder. On Holding AG is publicly traded (NYSE: ONON), having IPO’d in September 2021.
Colour
On lives in Swiss monochrome. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
On’s aesthetic is minimalist Swiss design — predominantly white and black, clean and monochrome, with colour used sparingly and precisely on product. It’s the visual language of Swiss engineering: reductive, exact and confident, letting the shoe technology (and the distinctive CloudTec sole) be the hero. The honest caveat: On publishes no official brand hex palette, so these near-black and white values are approximate. The restraint is strategic — a monochrome identity reads as premium, technical and modern, and it stands apart in a running-shoe category full of loud colour and busy graphics. On looks like what it is: precise, Swiss and quietly high-tech.
The lesson is monochrome as a signal of precision. On’s black-and-white minimalism communicates Swiss engineering and premium quality — colour withheld so the technology and clean design lead. For designers, it’s a reminder that in a loud category, a disciplined monochrome identity can read as more premium and more modern than bright graphics. The takeaways: consider a restrained, monochrome palette when your brand’s value is precision and engineering; let the product’s distinctive features (here, the CloudTec sole) provide the visual interest; and treat specific hexes as approximate when no official palette is published.
Typography
The wordmark is a clean sans — minimal, with one clever detail.
On’s clean, geometric sans wordmark is Swiss minimalism distilled: just the two letters “On,” precise and unadorned, with a single clever detail — the light-switch uptick that turns a plain wordmark into a small idea (“switched on,” lifting up). That restraint is exactly right for a brand built on precise engineering: the type looks modern, confident and technical, and the one witty flourish gives it personality without clutter. It’s a wordmark that does a lot with very little, which is the essence of good Swiss design. (Because the exact face is custom, the honest description is “a clean, geometric sans,” not a named font.) The typography behaves like the brand — minimal, precise, and cleverer than it first appears.

A clean, geometric sans — minimal and precise. (Specimen set in Manrope, a geometric sans in the spirit of the On wordmark; the real lettering is custom, with a light-switch uptick.)
Engineering as the brand
On made Swiss precision — in a shoe and a wordmark — its whole identity.
On is a lesson in engineering-led branding done with total consistency. Everything — the minimal two-letter wordmark with its clever switch, the monochrome Swiss palette, and above all the distinctive CloudTec sole — expresses one idea: precise, high-tech Swiss engineering. That coherence, plus a genuine product innovation and the halo of Roger Federer’s partnership, took On from a 2010 Zurich startup to a publicly-traded global brand in just over a decade. It’s an identity where the design language and the product are perfectly aligned: both minimal, both precise, both unmistakably Swiss.
For designers and brand-builders, On offers a clear takeaway: a coherent, engineering-led identity backed by real innovation can build a premium brand fast. The lessons: align every element — wordmark, palette, product design — around one clear idea (Swiss precision), so the brand reads as coherent and credible; a genuine product innovation (CloudTec) gives the identity real substance to point to; and a small, clever detail (the switch uptick) can give a minimal mark personality without clutter. It’s also a reminder to keep facts precise — On was founded in 2010 by three founders (Bernhard, Allemann, Coppetti), and Roger Federer is an investor and partner, not a founder. On turned Swiss engineering — in a sole and a two-letter wordmark — into one of running’s fastest-rising brands, proof that precision, consistently expressed, is a powerful identity.
