One bar, one forest

Original Beans built a chocolate brand as a conservation project.

Original Beans is a lesson in conservation as identity. Founded in 2008 by Philipp Kauffmann — who left the United Nations, with a conservation background — it makes rare, single-origin chocolate as a vehicle for regenerating what it consumes.

Its identity is conservation by design: a “Climate Positive,” regenerative-agroforestry brand whose signature is the One4One Trees programme, which it calls the world’s first “one4one” tree programme (launched 2010) — a tree grown and protected for every bar, marked with a One4One Tree Stamp. The cacao is rare and heirloom, and the bars are named plainly by origin and percentage — Cusco 100%, Piura 75%, Arhuaco 82% — with the origin story doing the work.

(Honest notes: Original Beans is Dutch-run but its chocolate is made in Switzerland, so it’s best described as Amsterdam-headquartered and Swiss-made. Its founder’s background is the UN and conservation, not banking. Its tree programme is branded “One4One Trees,” which is more accurate than “one bar, one tree,” and its impact is framed as millions of trees grown and protected. There’s no official brand hex, so these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Original Beans lives in a forest-green-and-gold palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Original Beans’ identity is natural, rare and considered — a forest green, an ink, a cacao gold, a bark, and a chalk. The palette pairs a forest green with a cacao gold — the register of a rainforest and a rare bean. It signals conservation and origin rather than indulgence. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a forest green with a cacao gold signals a conservation brand. Original Beans’ world is a protected forest. For designers, it is a reminder that a deep, natural palette reads as regenerative and premium — right for a conservation-led maker. The takeaways: source the palette from the forest (green, bark, cacao gold); mark the mission on the pack (a tree stamp); name plainly by origin; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a conservation serif — natural, refined, origin-led.

Original Beans’ identity carries a natural, refined, origin-led spirit — a rainforest and a rare bean. A conservation serif captures the mood: it is warm and editorial, the register of an origin story. Set in a forest-green-and-gold palette, the conservation serif feels natural and refined — exactly the personality Original Beans carries. It is origin-led rather than loud, mirroring a plain, storied wrapper. (Original Beans’ real packaging is work we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a conservation serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: natural, refined and origin-led.

Conservation as identity

Original Beans stands for a bar that plants a forest.

Original Beans is a lesson in making conservation the identity. A forest-green-and-gold palette, a conservation serif and a tree programme make regeneration the whole brand — natural, refined, origin-led. The mission is the differentiator. The differentiator is a conservation-by-design, rare-cacao identity.

For designers and brand-builders, Original Beans offers a clear takeaway: make the mission the product. The lessons: tie the product to a measurable act (One4One Trees); source rare and heirloom; name plainly by origin; and be honest about the details. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it’s Amsterdam-run and Swiss-made, the founder came from the UN, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Original Beans made conservation the brand — proof that a mission can be the difference.
