Okinawa Beer
A brewery founded under American administration.
Orion was founded in Okinawa twelve years after the Battle of Okinawa, while the islands were under United States administration. Japanese Wikipedia says the company was incorporated on 18 May 1957 as Okinawa Beer Co. in Nago, in the north of Okinawa Island, a town already known for its spring water, out of a conviction that Okinawa’s recovery needed manufacturing industry. Its founder was Sosei Gushiken, whom English Wikipedia and the Japan magazine Zoom Japan both name.
The name came from the public. On 1 November 1957 the company placed newspaper advertisements inviting Okinawans to name the beer, with prizes for the winners. Zoom Japan, citing the company, reported in 2020 that the contest drew more than 2,500 entries proposing 823 names, and that “Orion” was chosen for its link to Okinawa and its appeal to local drinkers. Japanese Wikipedia notes that copies of the original contest advertisement and of the winners’ announcement hang on the tour route at the Nago brewery. The company took the name Orion Beer in June 1959, the year it began brewing.
The start was hard. Japanese Wikipedia says the established mainland brewers dominated the market and Orion struggled until it changed its beer from a German style to an American style suited to Okinawa’s climate and sold it across the whole prefecture. Zoom Japan quoted a company spokesperson describing how, every night, the president himself led all his employees on door-to-door visits to bars and restaurants in Naha. The approach worked: Japanese Wikipedia, citing the Asahi Shimbun, says that just before Okinawa’s reversion to Japan in 1972 Orion held about nine-tenths of the Okinawan beer market.
Reversion brought a tax concession. Japanese Wikipedia says a time-limited reduction in liquor tax for beer shipped within Okinawa, introduced in 1972, was renewed again and again, and that in December 1972 the company moved its head office to Urasoe. The concession was set to be phased out by the end of September 2026, Toyo Keizai reported in 2022.
Colour
A constellation, a three-star general and two colours from the sky.
The name is the brand’s first piece of design. In its interview with Zoom Japan, the company explained that Orion is a constellation seen in the southern sky, matching the image of Okinawa as a southern island, and that stars stand for dreams and aspiration. The spokesperson added that the commander of the American forces governing Okinawa at the time was a three-star general, a detail that links the brand’s stars to the era in which it was born.
The wordmark carries its own meanings, as the company explained them to Zoom Japan. The “O” of Orion is cut, an incomplete circle, which the spokesperson said signifies the company’s desire to pursue its ideals and complete the circle. The “i” represents a person, and its dot, the person’s head, stands for the southern sun.
The colours come from the constellation too. According to the same interview, Orion’s red and blue were inspired by the two brightest stars of Orion, the red supergiant Betelgeuse and the blue-white Rigel. The company assigns red to the southern sun, passion, energy and solidarity, and blue to Okinawa’s sea and sky, harmony with nature and purity.
Orion has one brewery, in Nago, and its water is part of the story. English Wikipedia and Zoom Japan say the brewing water comes from springs on the mountain behind the brewery; Japanese Wikipedia records the local nickname “Nagu nu mijigwaa,” Okinawan for “the water of Nago.” Stars and Stripes reported in 2005 that the brewery uses German malt with Hallertau and Czech Saaz hops. The visitor centre at the brewery, Orion Happy Park, offers tours.
The flagship is Orion The Draft, renewed in February 2024 with barley grown on Iejima, an island off Okinawa, Japanese Wikipedia says. The range also includes the seasonal Ichiban Sakura, sold since 2002, the 75 Beer series of pilsner, IPA and other styles, and, since May 2019, a line of WATTA chūhai using Okinawan flavours. In South Korea, English Wikipedia notes, Orion’s beer has been marketed under the name Okinawa.
Typography
Design and documentation.
The seven brands in this group are all beer names from Asia and Europe: San Miguel, Efes, Sapporo, Orion, Cass, Hite and Staropramen. Beer brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from breweries that still carry the name of a town or a founder to labels that now belong to much larger drinks groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a stadium bar.
A beer brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle than by a label, a name and the place it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its brewing or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its beer is actually brewed and packaged.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its beer is brewed and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Orion
From an island brewer to a listed company.
Orion’s relationship with Asahi shapes how the beer reaches mainland Japan. Japanese Wikipedia says that in 2002, with the Okinawa tax concession under review, Orion entered an alliance with Asahi, already a major shareholder: Orion brews some Asahi Super Dry for Okinawa, and Asahi sells some Orion beers outside Okinawa, where they appear as “Asahi Orion” products, all of them still brewed at Nago. Orion opened its first overseas sales office, in Taiwan, in 2016.
Ownership changed in 2019. On 23 January 2019 Nomura Holdings and the American investment firm Carlyle announced that they would jointly acquire Orion, with the backing of Orion’s board, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported; Nikkei Asia said the aim was to expand the brand in Asia and the United States. In May 2020 the head office moved to Tomigusuku, south of Naha, and in December 2021 Hajime Murano became president. In June 2024 Kintetsu Group Holdings took a stake of about a tenth from the funds, RBC reported.
On 25 September 2025 Orion Breweries listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the first manufacturer headquartered in Okinawa to do so, Nikkei reported. After the listing, Nikkei Business reported, Asahi, with about a tenth of the shares, became Orion’s largest shareholder. Japanese Wikipedia describes Orion as Japan’s fifth-largest brewer, behind Asahi, Kirin, Suntory and Sapporo, and still the leader in Okinawa with about half the market.
In June 2023 cooling water containing propylene glycol, a food additive, flowed from the Nago brewery into the town’s fishing port and turned the water red; the company apologised, and the Yomiuri Shimbun reported no environmental impact.
The name is shared. Orion chocolate is a Czech confectionery brand with no connection to the Okinawan brewer.
For a design guide, Orion shows how a name chosen by newspaper readers, a cut letter and two colours borrowed from the night sky can make one island’s beer recognisable well beyond it. Compare Sapporo, the 1876 brewery of the north star, and Kirin, the Yokohama brewer. For this guide we use Rigel blue, Betelgeuse red and coral white with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
