Soda pop, reinvented

Poppi is the bold, viral prebiotic soda.

Poppi is a lesson in bold branding turning a functional drink into a phenomenon. It began in 2018 as “Mother Beverage,” founded by Allison and Stephen Ellsworth, who sold apple-cider-vinegar tonics at Dallas farmers’ markets; a Shark Tank pitch won a $400,000 investment from Rohan Oza (of CAVU). In 2020 it rebranded to “Poppi” — a play on “soda pop” — with colourful cans and a new identity.

It is a prebiotic soda built on an apple-cider-vinegar base with fruit juice and a little prebiotic fibre, low in sugar and calories. But its real engine was marketing: a bright, social-first look, a 2024 Super Bowl debut, and relentless influencer campaigns. In 2025 that momentum produced the headline: PepsiCo agreed to acquire Poppi for about $1.95 billion (announced March 2025, completed that May).

(Honest notes: Poppi is prebiotic (fibre), not probiotic (live cultures); its gut-health marketing drew a class action it settled for $8.9M — with critics noting ~2g of fibre per can is modest — so read benefits as positioning; a 2025 vending-machine influencer campaign drew backlash as tone-deaf; and it is now owned by PepsiCo, no longer an independent startup. No official brand hex is published.)

Colour

Poppi lives in a bold, bright palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Poppi’s identity is loud, bright and playful — a hero pink, a sunshine yellow, a punchy orange, a grape purple, and a fresh lime. The palette reads like a social feed: saturated, high-energy, thumb-stopping colour, one bold hue per flavour. It signals fun and modernity, the deliberate opposite of a quiet wellness aesthetic. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a bold, bright palette signals a social-first modern soda. Poppi’s world reads as energetic and young. For designers, it is a reminder that saturated, high-chroma colour reads instantly on screens and shelves, matching a brand built for TikTok and the Super Bowl. The takeaways: go bold and saturated to win attention; key one loud hue per flavour; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using a dark accent for small text so the brights stay in the palette.

Typography

The wordmark spirit is a rounded sans — bubbly and modern.

Poppi’s identity carries a bubbly, modern, playful spirit — a lowercase “poppi” wordmark whose rounded forms match a fun, social-first soda. A rounded sans captures the mood: it is friendly and contemporary, the register of a Gen-Z brand rather than a heritage soda. Set against a bold, bright palette, the rounded sans feels bubbly and modern — exactly the viral, better-for-you personality Poppi carries. It is playful rather than serious, mirroring a fizzy, fun drink. (Poppi’s real wordmark is a trademark we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not something we assert.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a rounded sans spirit,” not the Poppi logo. The type behaves like the brand: bubbly, modern and playful.

Bold branding as the difference

Poppi stands for a soda built to go viral.

Poppi is a lesson in branding as the growth engine. The underlying product — a prebiotic ACV soda — is not radically different from its rivals; what set Poppi apart was a loud, social-native identity and fearless marketing, from farmers’-market tonic to Shark Tank to the Super Bowl. That bold branding built the awareness and cultural heat that led PepsiCo to pay roughly $1.95 billion. The differentiator is distinctiveness and reach: Poppi made a functional soda feel like pop culture.

For designers and brand-builders, Poppi offers a clear takeaway: a bold, distinctive identity can be the biggest asset. The lessons: commit to a loud, ownable look that reads on a phone screen; treat marketing as a core product, not an add-on; and pair the noise with a real point of difference. It is also a reminder to keep the facts honest: Poppi is prebiotic (not probiotic), its gut-health claims drew a settled lawsuit, and it is now a PepsiCo brand — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Poppi branded loudly — proof that a bold identity can be the difference.
