A wallet, machined

Ridge made the wallet a design object.

Ridge is a lesson in a single, machined object as a brand. Founded in 2013 by Daniel Kane and his father Paul Kane via a hugely successful Kickstarter, it replaced the bulky billfold with a slim, RFID-blocking metal-plate wallet — two aluminum, titanium or carbon-fibre plates held by an elastic band. The product is the brand: precise, industrial, considered.

Its growth came from the internet: enormous podcast, YouTube and affiliate/creator marketing (it has worked with thousands of YouTube creators; MKBHD became an equity partner in 2024). The design language is minimalist, sleek and masculine, and — cleverly — the metal finishes themselves are the colour system (matte black, gunmetal, titanium, burnt bronze), under the line “Carry Less. Live More.”

(Honest notes: Ridge is private and, unusually, bootstrapped — it publicly says it has “no investors,” with MKBHD as its sole outside equity holder; it is run by CEO Sean Frank, not the founders, who remain owners. It reportedly passed $100 million in revenue in 2023 (a company-stated figure), and has expanded into a broader everyday-carry range. No official brand hex is published.)

Colour

Ridge lives in dark metallic tones. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Ridge’s identity is dark, metallic and industrial — a matte black, a gunmetal, a bronze, a silver, and an ink. The palette is the product: the wallet’s machined metal finishes — anodised blacks, gunmetal greys, warm titanium and bronze — function as the colourway system. It signals premium, engineered, masculine minimalism. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is let the material finish be the palette. Ridge’s world is machined metal. For designers, it is a reminder that when a product’s finishes are its differentiator, the brand palette can simply be those finishes — dark, metallic, premium — rather than a printed colour spec. The takeaways: derive the palette from the material; keep it dark and disciplined to read as engineered; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using a deep gunmetal for small text so the metallics stay premium.

Typography

The wordmark spirit is a clean industrial sans — precise and modern.

Ridge’s identity carries a precise, industrial, modern spirit — a clean “Ridge” wordmark on a machined metal object. A clean, slightly technical sans captures the mood: it is engineered and confident, the register of a brand that treats a wallet like a precision instrument. Set against dark metallic tones, the clean type feels premium and masculine — exactly the machined personality Ridge carries. It is precise rather than ornate, mirroring milled aluminum and titanium. (Ridge’s real wordmark and wallet form are trademarks and trade dress we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not published, so we don’t assert it.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a clean industrial spirit,” not the Ridge logo. The type behaves like the brand: precise, industrial and modern.

One object, all the internet

Ridge stands for machined minimalism.

Ridge is a lesson in one perfect object plus relentless creator marketing. It took a commodity — the wallet — and made it a machined, minimalist design object, then scaled it through thousands of YouTube and podcast integrations until “the metal wallet” was practically a genre. Product design and internet distribution did the work together. The differentiator is a precise object marketed natively online.

For designers and brand-builders, Ridge offers a clear takeaway: a beautifully engineered object can anchor a whole brand. The lessons: let the material finishes be the palette; keep the identity dark, precise and premium; and meet the audience where it watches (creators, podcasts). It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Ridge is bootstrapped, run by CEO Sean Frank (not the founders), with self-reported revenue figures — and the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Ridge machined the wallet — proof that one object can be the brand.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Ridge’s visual identity; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Ridge. The Ridge name, wordmark and wallet form are trademarks and trade dress of their respective owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and swatches), not Ridge assets, and no wordmark or product form is reproduced. Facts reported from public sources (Wikipedia, Ridge, Kickstarter, BusinessWire, Shopify): Ridge was founded in 2013 by Daniel Kane and his father Paul Kane via a successful Kickstarter, making a slim, RFID-blocking metal-plate wallet (aluminum, titanium, carbon fibre) that expanded into a broader everyday-carry range, grown through large-scale podcast, YouTube and affiliate/creator marketing (MKBHD became an equity partner and Chief Creative Partner in 2024), with a minimalist industrial identity where metal finishes serve as the colourway system, under “Carry Less. Live More.” Honest notes: it is private and bootstrapped (the company states it has “no investors,” with MKBHD its sole outside equity holder) and is run by CEO Sean Frank (since 2018), not the founders, who remain owners; it reportedly passed $100 million in revenue in 2023 (a company-stated figure); and no official brand hex is published, so colours are an unofficial interpretation.
