Shopee Brand Guidelines
A Singapore marketplace, a group named after the sea and a date for a name.

A mobile marketplace
Singapore, February 2015.
Shopee was set up in Singapore in February 2015 as a mobile-focused marketplace where people could browse, buy and sell, according to Wikipedia. The platform bundled logistics and payment support into each transaction and was designed to run with few physical assets of its own. It began as a consumer-to-consumer marketplace and later became a hybrid that also hosts businesses selling to consumers, Wikipedia says, and it added a website alongside the app.
Trust was built into the product early. A feature Wikipedia singles out is Shopee Guarantee, an escrow service that holds a buyer’s payment until the buyer confirms that the order has arrived. In 2016 the company started Shopee University, a training programme for local sellers setting up online businesses, and in 2017 it launched Shopee Mall for brands in Singapore and the Philippines. Each of these carries the Shopee name as a prefix, so the marketplace, its guarantee, its school and its mall all read as parts of one brand.
Delivery is handled through partners. Shopee works with courier companies across its markets, Wikipedia says, among them the logistics start-up Ninja Van in Singapore and the national postal services Pos Malaysia and Pos Indonesia.
The business has its own address in Singapore. On 3 September 2019, Wikipedia says, Shopee officially opened a six-storey regional headquarters at Singapore Science Park, replacing its previous office in the Ascent Building. From there the marketplace runs in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, and it expanded to Brazil in 2019, Wikipedia adds, its earliest move into Latin America.
Colour
From Garena to Sea.
Shopee belongs to a group whose own name changed. The parent company was founded in Singapore by Forrest Li as Garena, a digital entertainment company known in gaming circles for running titles such as League of Legends and FIFA online, Vulcan Post reported on 9 May 2017. Under that games brand sat two younger businesses, Shopee and the payments service AirPay.
That month the parent took a new name. Garena rebranded to Sea, Vulcan Post reported, a name drawn from the company’s home region of Southeast Asia and from the ocean that connects its countries, which the company tied to its motto, “connect the dots”. Li set out the logic in a statement quoted by the site: “We cherish these three brands, and are now embracing an overall identity for our entire company.” Garena kept its name as the group’s games arm, Wikipedia says, so the change added a parent name above three consumer brands rather than replacing any of them.
The parent name is short and set in lower case. Wikipedia says the group is styled as “sea” and functions today as a holding company for Garena, Shopee and the digital-finance business Monee. It adds that Garena had been established by Li in Singapore in 2009, that the change of name in May 2017 was meant to reflect a range of businesses spanning digital entertainment, e-commerce and digital financial services, and that Sea listed on the New York Stock Exchange later in 2017. The group name also appears on buildings: in January 2025, Wikipedia says, Sea and the National University of Singapore opened the Sea Building and Sea Connect at the university’s School of Computing. Shopee keeps its own name, app and colour beneath that parent.
The group also shapes how Shopee talks about itself. In September 2022, Wikipedia says, Li sent employees a memo about cost controls aimed at what he called “self-sufficiency”, and the marketplace retreated from several countries it had entered, including France, Spain and India, while keeping its business in Poland and Brazil.
Typography
Founders, icons and merged names.
Company identities in Asia often grow out of a single founder group or family holding, and the corporate mark has to cover businesses as varied as refining, retail, telecoms and software. The name tends to stay fixed while the symbol beside it is redrawn as the group changes shape, so one logo can sit above many trading names at once.
For app-first businesses the logo and the app icon are frequently the same object. A mark that must read at the size of a fingertip on a crowded phone screen is drawn as a simple, closed shape in one strong colour, and the full wordmark is reserved for larger formats such as signage, delivery bags and helmets.
Campaign naming built on calendar dates, in which a day and month repeated as numbers become the name of a sales event, is a recurring pattern in regional e-commerce. The date itself works as a brand asset that can be printed, counted down and repeated each year.
Mergers and new holding structures are a common trigger for redesign. A combined group may add a new parent name above existing consumer brands, or redraw a symbol to signal a shift from a single service to a wider platform, while keeping familiar colours so that customers still recognise the product.
Aa
A geometric sans — after a marketplace named for its app and a sale named for a date. (Specimen set in Poppins, a sans STAND-IN; NOT the Shopee logo or any Shopee typeface.)
Shopee
A date for a name.
Shopee’s campaigns are named after the calendar. One pattern repeats the number of the month as the day, so that the ninth of September becomes 9.9. In August 2019 The Jakarta Post described the 9.9 Super Shopping Day as an annual shopping campaign and reported that it would run that year from 16 August to 9 September. Later dates in the year follow the same pattern; Wikipedia mentions the company’s 11.11 campaign in the Philippines in 2022.
The date also became the hook for a footballer. On 15 August 2019, The Jakarta Post reported that the Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo had become a Shopee brand ambassador and would take part in a range of initiatives starting with 9.9 Super Shopping Day. A Shopee advertisement starring Ronaldo was to premiere on 16 August and air at the same time in seven countries where Shopee operated, including Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia, the paper said, and fans could see exclusive content on Shopee Live.
The advertisement itself became a talking point. The Press Association, in a report carried by The Irish News on 16 August 2019, described it: Ronaldo scores a free kick, is shown a Shopee card by the referee, and then appears in an on-brand T-shirt dancing while tapping the app. Social media users, the report said, were left confused. Wikipedia says the music was “Baby Shark” and that the clip became a meme among football fans.
For a design guide, Shopee shows how a marketplace can make a date into a brand asset and keep its own identity beneath a group name. Compare Lazada, its regional e-commerce neighbour, and Razer, another Singapore-based technology brand with roots in gaming. For this guide we use orange, a brick red and ink with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
