Natural-dye craft

Story mfg. makes slow fashion from the land.

Story mfg. is a lesson in craft and sustainability as a design language. Founded around 2013 by husband-and-wife Saeed and Katy Al-Rubeyi, the London-based label makes its clothes with artisan partners in India, following a “Positive Product” ethos of slow, natural, low-waste craft.

Its brand identity is natural, earthy and hand-made — natural plant dyes (indigo, madder, myrobalan, pomegranate, jackfruit, iron), hand-crochet, hand-embroidery and weaving, all vegan and cruelty-free. Its whole philosophy is “buy less” — build things to last.

(Honest notes: it’s styled “Story mfg.” It’s slow, sustainable craft fashion, not hype streetwear. India is where it’s made; London is where it’s based — the two shouldn’t be conflated. Its colours come from the natural dyes themselves, and there’s no official brand hex, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Story mfg. lives in a natural-dye palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Story mfg.’s identity is natural, earthy and warm — an indigo, a madder, an ochre, a moss, and an undyed cream. The palette comes straight from the dye pot: indigo blue, madder red and myrobalan ochre on undyed cotton — the register of plants, earth and hand-craft. It signals nature, slowness and honesty rather than synthetic polish. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a natural-dye palette signals slow, honest craft. Story mfg.’s world is a dye vat and a loom. For designers, it is a reminder that indigo, madder and ochre on undyed cream read as natural and hand-made — right for a brand built on plant dyes and artisan craft. The takeaways: draw colour from natural materials; keep it earthy and warm; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using a dark tone for small text so the dyes stay rich.

Typography

The register is an organic serif — warm and considered.

Story mfg.’s identity carries a natural, warm, considered spirit — plant dyes, hand-craft and slow making. A soft, organic serif captures the mood: it is warm and characterful, the register of a hand-set book and a maker’s label. Set in a natural-dye palette, the organic serif feels warm and considered — exactly the personality Story mfg. carries. It is warm rather than clinical, mirroring a hand-dyed cloth. (Story mfg.’s real wordmark is a trademark we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact brand typeface is not ours to use.) Because the mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “an organic serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: natural, warm and considered.

Craft as identity

Story mfg. stands for slow, natural craft.

Story mfg. is a lesson in making slow craft the identity. A natural-dye palette, hand-made techniques and a “buy less” ethos make sustainable craft the whole brand — earthy, honest, made to last. The craft is the differentiator. The differentiator is a natural, hand-made, slow identity.

For designers and brand-builders, Story mfg. offers a clear takeaway: genuine sustainability can be a brand. The lessons: use real natural materials (plant dyes, organic cotton); honour the makers (artisan partnerships); and design for longevity, not hype. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: credit both founders, keep India (made) and London (based) distinct, and treat the palette as an unofficial interpretation. Story mfg. made slow craft the brand — proof that care can be the difference.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Story mfg.’s visual identity; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Story mfg. The Story mfg. name and wordmark are trademarks of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and swatches); no logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in, never in the Story mfg. logo or typeface. Facts reported from public sources (storymfg.com, END., Hypebeast): Story mfg. is an independent, London-based label founded around 2013 by husband-and-wife Saeed and Katy Al-Rubeyi, making its clothes with artisan partners in India under a “Positive Product” ethos — natural plant dyes (indigo, madder, myrobalan, pomegranate, jackfruit, iron), hand-crochet, hand-embroidery and weaving, all vegan and cruelty-free, built to last (“buy less”) — with collaborators including Dr. Martens (the naturally-dyed 1461, 2020), ASICS, SUICOKE, Crocs and PF Flyers, plus its own fragrances. Honest notes: it is styled “Story mfg.”; it is slow, sustainable craft fashion rather than hype streetwear; India is where the clothes are made and London is where the brand is based; and its colour comes from the natural dyes themselves, with no official brand hex published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
