Denver, 1993

A one-night tournament, a pay-per-view partner and an octagonal cage.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship began as a single televised tournament. English Wikipedia credits the idea to businessman Art Davie, martial artist Rorion Gracie and film director John Milius, with backing from Semaphore Entertainment Group (SEG), the pay-per-view producer led by Bob Meyrowitz. Davie’s company, WOW Promotions, partnered with SEG in May 1993, and the two produced the opening event at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado, on 12 November 1993. That night was later given a number and became known as UFC 1, the start of the numbered series that still structures the promotion’s calendar.

Wikipedia records that Davie and Gracie sold their interest to SEG in April 1995, after the fifth event in Charlotte, North Carolina, leaving SEG as the owner of the name. Over the following years the promotion added weight classes and gloves and worked with state athletic commissions on rules, while events moved through a series of smaller US venues.

Another fixture of the brand arrived with the format itself: the fighting enclosure known as the Octagon. According to Wikipedia, SEG trademarked both the concept and the term, and for a time stopped other promotions from using a cage of the same shape. The enclosure is an octagonal structure of chain-link fence coated in black vinyl, set on a raised platform, with padding along the top and between the panels and two gates opposite each other. Its canvas floor is painted with sponsor logos and event art and is replaced for each event, which turns the mat itself into a printed surface that changes with every card.

By 2000, SEG was in financial difficulty. Wikipedia says that Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, executives at Station Casinos, approached SEG together with their business partner Dana White, and that in January 2001 the brothers bought the UFC and created Zuffa, LLC as its parent company, with White as president. ESPN, reporting in July 2016, dated the Fertittas’ purchase to 2000; both dates appear in the record. Wikipedia adds that in 2001 Zuffa allowed other promotions to use octagonal cages, reasoning that the young sport needed uniformity to win official sanctioning, while keeping the name “The Octagon” for itself.

Under Zuffa, the brand spread across television and home video. The reality series The Ultimate Fighter launched on Spike TV in January 2005, and Zuffa acquired other promotions, including World Extreme Cagefighting in 2006 and Strikeforce in 2011, folding some of their divisions and fighters into the UFC. The streaming service UFC Fight Pass followed in 2014.

The next change of ownership came in July 2016. ESPN reported on 11 July 2016 that the talent agency WME-IMG, together with its owner Silver Lake Partners, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and MSD Capital, was taking over the organisation, that Lorenzo Fertitta would step down while the brothers kept a minority interest, and that White would stay on. WME-IMG later took the name Endeavor, and Wikipedia records that after Endeavor’s 2021 public listing it bought out Zuffa’s other shareholders.

In April 2023, The New York Times reported that Endeavor had agreed to acquire WWE and merge it with the UFC in a new public company trading under the symbol TKO, with Ari Emanuel as chief executive and Mark Shapiro as president and chief operating officer. The combination closed in September 2023. Wrestlenomics reported in 2026 that Silver Lake took Endeavor private in March 2025 and that Endeavor entities hold a majority of TKO shares. Wikipedia places the UFC’s base in the Las Vegas area, where it also runs the UFC Apex production facility, opened in June 2019.

Design and documentation.

A sports league or promotion rarely sells a single object. What it builds is a system of marks that has to work everywhere the competition appears: on a television graphic in the corner of a screen, on a ticket, on a replica shirt, on a mat or a pitch, and on a social feed viewed on a phone. That spread of uses tends to push league and promotion logos towards simple silhouettes, a small set of colours and lettering that can survive being shrunk, stitched or animated.

Broadcast packages are a large part of that identity. Score bugs, lower thirds, opening titles and replay wipes repeat the same colours and type across every event, so viewers learn the look of a competition before they know its history. Organisations can refresh these packages on their own schedule, separate from the main logo.

Physical objects carry the brand too. Jerseys, championship belts, trophies, medals and rings are made to be photographed, and their shapes, materials and engraving often echo the primary mark. Studying a league’s identity means looking past the logo file to the graphics, kit and prizes that surround it.

UFC

Initials, a cage and a kit that changes hands.

The UFC identity rests on a handful of recurring elements. One is the initials: the full name, Ultimate Fighting Championship, is usually shortened to UFC in event titles, on the cage and in the names of its services. Another is the Octagon, the name of the cage itself, which Zuffa kept as a protected term even after the shape was opened to other promotions in 2001. A third is the numbered event, a naming system that runs from UFC 1 in Denver onward and gives each card a place in a long sequence, alongside the separate Fight Night series.

Clothing has been used to make the look more uniform. Wikipedia records that the UFC and Reebok announced an exclusive outfitting deal on 2 December 2014, starting in July 2015, under which fighters wore approved kit and third-party sponsor logos were removed from fighter clothing and from inside the cage. In July 2020 the UFC named Venum as its exclusive outfitting partner from April 2021. Each change of supplier altered what fighters wore on the walk to the cage, while the event branding around them stayed in the promotion’s hands.

Championship belts sit at the centre of the presentation as well: they are carried into the cage, presented after title fights and reproduced as die-cast replicas for collectible figures, which Wikipedia lists among the promotion’s licensed merchandise.

Ownership has changed several times — SEG, Zuffa, the WME-IMG group and now TKO Group Holdings — but the core marks have travelled through each sale: the initials, the cage and the numbered event.

For a design guide, UFC shows how a piece of equipment, a short set of initials and a numbered naming system can sit together as one identity. Compare it with its TKO stablemate in the WWE Brand Guidelines, the broadcaster in the ESPN Brand Guidelines and the league shield in the NFL Brand Guidelines. For this guide we use cage black, fight red and canvas white with a condensed athletic sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
