A Meeting at the Gunter Hotel

Army officers who formed an exchange to insure one another.

USAA began as an agreement among soldiers. English Wikipedia says the association was formed at a meeting of 25 United States Army officers on 20 June 1922 at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, called to discuss how to obtain reliable and economical motor insurance. The San Antonio Report, writing on the eve of the centenary in June 2022, described the same founding: 25 Army officers who met at the Gunter Hotel downtown to form a reciprocal insurance exchange, in which members insure one another.

The four letters were not the original name. Wikipedia says the organisation was originally called the United States Army Automobile Association. In 1924 it became the United Services Automobile Association, when commissioned officers from the other branches of the armed forces became eligible to join. The change of a single word, from Army to Services, widened the name to cover the other branches.

The early years were not smooth. By the late 1920s, Wikipedia records, a dispute between rival factions for control threatened the company, and it was settled when the feuding members agreed to hire a leader from outside. In 1928 Major General Ernest Hinds was appointed general manager and secretary-treasurer; the article credits him with providing stability, and he remained in the post until 1941. For decades afterwards the association conducted the bulk of its business by post, the article says.

From mail to telephone to the web, and a campus in San Antonio.

The way USAA reached its members changed in three steps. Wikipedia says that until the 1960s the bulk of its business was conducted by mail, and that in the late 1960s it began moving to sales and service by telephone. Retired Air Force brigadier general Robert F. McDermott became chief executive in 1969; the USAA office building in San Antonio was built during his tenure, and he led the shift from service by mail to service by phone. A toll-free number followed in 1978. In 1993 retired Air Force General Robert T. Herres became chief executive; under him, Wikipedia says, USAA extended its services to enlisted members of the military and developed internet-based financial services, and it launched internet sales and service through its website in June 1999, the article says.

The headquarters building has its own place in the company’s story. The San Antonio Report noted in 2022 that the headquarters was built in 1976, and that a time capsule sealed that year would be opened at the centenary celebration, where McDermott’s letter to a future chief executive was to be read. A new capsule was to be buried for opening on USAA’s 150th birthday in 2072. The same report said the event, two years in the planning, would include employees re-enacting periods from the company’s history and would be attended by descendants of the founders. The San Antonio Report carries a disclosure that USAA is a financial supporter of the publication.

Membership rules widened over the decades, and each change altered who the brand addressed. Wikipedia says membership was opened to the National Guard and Reserves in 1973, to enlisted members of the armed services in 1996, to anyone who had ever served honourably in November 2009, and to those with a general discharge in 2022.

Typography

Insurers, banks and their marks.

American financial brands tend to draw on a small set of visual ideas, and most of them are older than modern advertising. The first is the surname. Many firms in banking, insurance and investment carry the names of the people who started them, and a wordmark built from two family names reads as a signature, a promise that someone stands behind the account. Over time those names are often shortened to initials or a single word, and the letterforms are redrawn to look calm at small sizes on statements, cards and phone screens.

The second idea is the emblem. Eagles, shields, umbrellas and other protective shapes appear again and again because they are easy to read and suggest cover and steadiness without a word of copy. A plain box or square, filled with one strong colour, does similar work for firms that want to look restrained rather than heraldic.

The third idea belongs to advertising rather than the logo. Insurers in particular lean on recurring characters: animated mascots, invented animals and actors who return in campaign after campaign, so that a voice or a face becomes as recognisable as the mark itself. Together, names, emblems and familiar spokespeople give a set of abstract services something people can picture and remember.

USAA

From the Army–Navy Game to NFL salutes.

USAA’s sponsorships keep its audience in view. English Wikipedia says the company has sponsored the National Football League in recognising and honouring the military community since 2011, and has backed the Wounded Warrior Project since 2009. In college sports it is a partner of the three United States service academies that play in NCAA Division I, the Air Force Falcons, the Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen, and it has been presenting sponsor of the Army–Navy Game since 2009 under a multi-year agreement running through 2030.

The home city is part of the identity too. USAA remains headquartered in northwest San Antonio, Wikipedia says, with a second major office in Phoenix and others in Chesapeake, Colorado Springs, Plano and Tampa, plus international offices in Dublin, London and Frankfurt. The San Antonio Report framed the 2022 centenary as a milestone for the city as well as the company, which it described as established in 1922 and serving members of the military, veterans and their families.

The business behind the initials has also been reshaped by sales as well as additions. Wikipedia says USAA offered a restricted membership to civilians between September 2009 and August 2013, giving access to investment, deposit and life products but not to motor or property policies. In 2019 the company sold its asset management company to Victory Capital, and in May 2020 the Charles Schwab Corporation acquired USAA’s investment management and brokerage accounts, the article records. Robert G. Davis, a former Army officer, had become chief executive in 2000, after Herres. Through these changes the four letters and the San Antonio address stayed the same, and the association continued to market directly to members of the military, as Wikipedia notes it always has.

For a design guide, USAA shows how an initialism can carry a long institutional name and a wider membership without changing its letters, while sponsorships of service-academy football and veterans’ causes keep the audience clear. Compare GEICO, which began as the Government Employees Insurance Company, and Liberty Mutual, another American mutual insurer. For this guide we use service blue, navy and mist with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
