Vaarnii Brand Guidelines
The pine chair.

Two constants: a pine-and-sap palette and a brutalist sans register. Abstract homage — not a Vaarnii chair or wordmark.
The pine chair
Vaarnii makes bold, solid furniture from Finnish pine, handmade in Finland.
Vaarnii is a lesson in an unlikely material as the identity. A young Finnish maker, it builds bold, chunky furniture from solid Finnish pine — deliberately choosing a soft, unfashionable, local wood over the birch and oak of Nordic modernism, and making it all in Finland. A chair, made from “brutally Finnish” pine.
Its identity is the pine chair. Vaarnii’s solid-pine, contemporary furniture is the work it is known for. A material, made a signature. A maker that made pine cool.
(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Vaarnii was founded in early 2021 by Antti Hirvonen, who came from Artek and Tom Dixon, and Miklu Silvanto, an industrial designer who worked at Apple — we credit both. It is independent, and its whole positioning is “Brutally Finnish.” Everything is handmade in Finland, at Finnish workshops, from FSC-certified Finnish Scots pine. It commissions international designers such as Philippe Malouin, Max Lamb and Mac Collins. On the name: “Vaarnii” is a portmanteau of the Finnish words for dowel and ash, not simply “dowel.” Its designs and name are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
Vaarnii lives in a pine-and-sap palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Vaarnii’s identity is bold, warm and honest — a pine, an ink, a sap, a bark, and a chalk. The palette leans pine and sap: the register of raw, golden Finnish pine. It signals material honesty over polish. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.
The lesson is a pine-and-sap palette signals a bold, material-honest identity. Vaarnii’s world is a raw, golden, made-in-Finland object. For designers, it is a reminder that a single, honest material can carry a brand — the gold of pine and the amber of sap. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: pick an unlikely material; own it fully; make it at home; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a brutalist sans — bold, plain, confident.
Vaarnii’s identity carries a bold, plain, confident spirit — a raw object, not a refined one. A brutalist sans captures the mood: strong, blunt and modern, the register of chunky solid pine. Set in a pine-and-sap palette, the brutalist sans feels bold and plain — exactly the personality Vaarnii carries. It is confident rather than delicate, mirroring a heavy, honest pine chair. (Vaarnii’s real chairs and wordmark are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a brutalist-sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the maker: bold, plain and confident.

An unlikely material as identity
Vaarnii stands for the pine chair.
Vaarnii is a lesson in making an unlikely material the identity. A pine-and-sap palette, a brutalist sans and solid-pine furniture make one material the whole maker — bold, warm and honest. The material is the differentiator. The differentiator is a genuine, contrarian choice — building serious furniture from soft, cheap, local pine, and making it entirely in Finland.
Put to work, the identity is a material as design. A maker building in this spirit would choose a material others dismiss, commit to it completely, and make everything at home, so the customer buys into a point of view rather than a trend. It would let the rawness of pine be the aesthetic, so that honesty reads as confidence. It would work with strong designers to prove the material can be ambitious, so that a humble wood carries big ideas. The lesson Vaarnii teaches is that an unlikely material, fully owned, can build a brand: the pine gives it a point of view, and the Finnish making gives it substance. The material is the personality, and the making is the proof.
For designers and brand-builders, Vaarnii offers a clear takeaway: own an unlikely material completely. The lessons: pick the overlooked wood; commit to it; make it at home; and be accurate about the story. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Vaarnii is an independent Finnish maker founded in 2021 by Antti Hirvonen and Miklu Silvanto, making bold solid-pine furniture in Finland with designers like Philippe Malouin — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Vaarnii made the pine chair the maker — proof that an unlikely material can be the difference.
