Wayfair Brand Guidelines
A spare-bedroom start-up, two words that resonated and a signature purple.

Two constants: a purple, lilac and warm white palette and a rounded friendly sans register. Abstract homage — not a Wayfair product or mark; no logo, store or catalogue page is reproduced.
Racks, stands and a spare bedroom
Two founders, a niche website and a company named after their initials.
Wayfair is an online home retailer based in Boston, Massachusetts. Its own history begins in 2002, when the co-founders Niraj Shah and Steve Conine launched a website called racksandstands.com. English Wikipedia dates the founding to August 2002 and says the two worked from a makeshift headquarters in Conine’s home, a detail the company repeats in its own timeline, which describes a two-person team working out of Steve’s spare bedroom. Wikipedia adds that the pair had studied at Cornell University and had built companies together before.
The business was not called Wayfair at first. It traded as CSN Stores, a name that Wikipedia says was taken from the founders’ initials. Rather than one shop, CSN Stores ran a large family of narrow, single-subject websites, each selling one kind of thing, from media stands and bar stools to cookware. The company’s timeline says that in 2003 it moved out of the spare bedroom and into its first office, on Newbury Street in Boston, and that over the next few years it added operations in Europe: a customer-service centre in Galway, Ireland, in 2008 and a European headquarters in Berlin in 2009.
Two of the names that now sit alongside Wayfair were created in this period. The company says AllModern, a modern-furniture shop, was born in 2006, and that Joss & Main launched in 2010 as a members-only private-sale site, with a mascot called Walter. Wikipedia describes AllModern as the first specialty brand launched under CSN Stores.
The change that created the present brand came in 2011. According to Wikipedia, Shah and Conine rebranded CSN Stores as Wayfair to direct traffic to a single site and to unify the company’s look, and Wayfair.com launched on 1 September 2011. Wikipedia says the name was chosen by a branding firm and carries no other meaning. The company tells the story in similar terms: its “Who We Are” page calls the name “simply two words that resonated at the time,” and says the separate sites were merged into one platform for every corner of the home.
Colour
A television jingle, a stock listing and a family of shop names.
Having gathered its business under one name, the company set about making that name familiar. Its timeline says the Wayfair brand made its big debut with a national television campaign in 2012, and that in 2014 a jingle, “Wayfair, you got just what I need!”, arrived in a new brand campaign. The same year the company went public. Wikipedia says the listing came in October 2014 on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol W, and Wayfair Inc. remains a listed company today, with its headquarters at Copley Place in Boston.
The family of shop names kept growing. The timeline records Birch Lane, a traditional-furniture brand, in 2014, and Perigold, a luxury home brand, in 2017, the year in which Wayfair’s business-to-business arm was renamed Wayfair Professional. Wikipedia lists five retail websites under the group today: Wayfair, Joss & Main, AllModern, Birch Lane and Perigold. In 2015 the company sold its Australian business to the local online retailer Temple & Webster, Wikipedia says, and in January 2025 it announced that it would leave the German and Austrian markets.
Behind the website sits a logistics network. The company says its CastleGate fulfilment centres, introduced in 2015, were built to speed up delivery, and that Wayfair.ca went live in 2016. Wayfair is a retailer rather than a factory: Wikipedia describes it as selling furniture and home goods from a large base of suppliers around the world.
Some of the company’s marketing has become part of its calendar. Its timeline says the first Way Day, an annual sale, launched in the United States in 2018, and that in 2020 the singer Kelly Clarkson became the brand’s ambassador. In 2021 the company launched Wayfair on Air, a video shopping feature in its app.
One legal case carries the company’s name into American law. In 2018 the US Supreme Court decided South Dakota v. Wayfair, holding that states may require out-of-state sellers to collect sales tax, according to Wikipedia.

Design and documentation.
The brands in this group sell furniture and home goods mainly at a distance, through printed catalogues, websites or both. Some started as mail-order businesses that posted catalogues to customers’ homes; others began online and never printed a catalogue at all. Several belong to larger retail groups, and a single company can run more than one of these names side by side, each aimed at a different taste or budget.
Because the customer usually meets the brand before seeing any product in person, a distance retailer’s identity is carried largely by its name, its photography, its catalogue or website layout and, more recently, by the physical stores that some of these businesses have begun to open. That makes the plain questions behind each name worth asking: who started it, who owns it now, and who actually makes what it sells.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time and how its look has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Wayfair
From a single website to stores built around a signature purple.
For most of its life Wayfair’s identity existed only on screens, in advertising and in delivery boxes. That began to change in 2019, when, Wikipedia says, the company announced its first permanent physical store, at the Natick Mall in Massachusetts, after testing temporary pop-up shops during the 2018 holiday season. The company’s timeline says that in 2022 it began opening stores for its specialty brands, starting with an AllModern store in Lynnfield, Massachusetts.
A larger step came in May 2024, when Wayfair opened its first large-format store, at Edens Plaza in Wilmette, Illinois, north of Chicago. The architecture and design firm Gensler, announcing its work on the project on 28 May 2024, described a two-storey building whose look reflects what it called Wayfair’s playful and inviting brand personality, with a warm and bright palette and “pops of the brand’s signature purple.” Gensler said the departments were grouped into themed neighbourhoods under a concept it called “The Wayborhood,” intended to give shoppers a simple route through furniture, home accessories and appliances. Adam Katz, Wayfair’s head of physical retail, said in the same release that the aim was to translate the online shopping experience that customers know into a physical store.
The specialty brands have followed with their own shops. Wikipedia records further AllModern stores in Dedham, Massachusetts, and Austin, Texas; Joss & Main stores in Burlington, Massachusetts, and Oak Brook, Illinois; Birch Lane stores in Florida from March 2024; and Perigold’s first stores, in Houston and West Palm Beach, in 2025. On 7 October 2026 the company announced plans for another large-format Wayfair store, at Market Place at Garden State Park in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, which it expects to open in late 2028.
For a design guide, Wayfair shows how an online retailer can build an identity from a coined name and a colour, then carry both into bricks and mortar. Compare Joss & Main, the Wayfair-owned home brand, and IKEA, the large-format home store. For this guide we use purple, lilac, warm white and aubergine with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
