A cartoon studio with several names

Walt and Roy O. Disney, Kingswell Avenue and a contract, 1923.

Walt Disney Animation Studios carries a founder’s name, but it has answered to several others. Wikipedia dates the studio to 16 October 1923, when the brothers Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney started Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in Los Angeles, and /Film, in a centenary piece published on 7 October 2023, explained why that date is used: it was the day the distributor Margaret Winkler signed a contract commissioning Walt Disney to make a series of short films that became the Alice Comedies, which mixed a live-action girl with an animated world. /Film said Alice’s Day at Sea, made under the new studio name, came out on 1 March 1924.

The name changed early and often. Wikipedia says the brothers worked initially from their uncle Robert Disney’s garage in the Los Feliz district, then from a small office on Kingswell Avenue, before moving in January 1926 to a new site on Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake, where the business took the name Walt Disney Studio. /Film said it was Roy who started that renaming. Wikipedia says the company was reincorporated as Walt Disney Productions on 16 December 1929, and /Film noted that the Walt Disney Productions name lasted more than fifty years.

The character that later anchored the studio’s ident arrived in 1928. /Film described how Disney lost the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series, which Universal distributed through Charles Mintz, and how he, Roy and the animator Ub Iwerks started again with a mouse. Deadline, writing on 1 January 2024, gave the release date of Steamboat Willie as 18 November 1928, and noted that Mickey whistles the 1910 tune “Steamboat Bill” in the short. Wikipedia says the cartoon debuted at the West 57th Theatre in New York, with a soundtrack arranged by Carl Stalling.

Feature films followed in the next decade. Wikipedia says Walt Disney announced plans for a feature in 1934, and that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released in 1937. /Film placed Pinocchio and Fantasia in 1940 and Dumbo on 23 October 1941. Wikipedia says money from Snow White let the company build a new studio on Buena Vista Street in Burbank, where the Walt Disney Company still has its headquarters, and that Walt Disney Productions went public on 2 April 1940.

The animation unit kept its own identity as the parent grew. Wikipedia says that on 1 February 1985 the animation department began moving from the Burbank lot to warehouses, hangars and trailers on Flower Street in nearby Glendale, and that in 1986, when Walt Disney Productions became the Walt Disney Company, the animation studio was named Walt Disney Feature Animation to set it apart from the company’s other divisions.

Pixar’s managers, a new name in 2007 and a line of creative chiefs.

The studio’s current name followed a change of management. Wikipedia says Disney announced on 24 January 2006 that it would acquire Pixar Animation Studios, with the deal closing that May, and that Pixar’s Ed Catmull and John Lasseter took charge of Disney’s own animation unit as well. The Hollywood Reporter, reviewing a Disney release on 29 March 2007, referred to Pixar as the studio Disney had acquired in a stock swap the previous year, and to the older Disney animation unit in Burbank as “the one Walt established”. Wikipedia lists Lasseter as chief creative officer from January 2006 to June 2018 and Catmull as president from June 2007 to July 2019, and says that Catmull and Lasseter kept the two studios separate, each responsible for its own projects.

Wikipedia says that in 2007 Lasseter changed the name of Walt Disney Feature Animation to Walt Disney Animation Studios, and repositioned it as a house for both hand-drawn and computer-animated work. The Reporter’s review of Meet the Robinsons, released that spring, listed Lasseter and Clark Spencer among the executive producers.

Leadership has changed hands several times since. Cartoon Brew reported on 19 September 2024 that Jennifer Lee, who had taken over the creative officer role from Lasseter in 2018, was stepping down after six years to return to directing and writing Frozen 3 and to write Frozen 4 with Marc Smith. Her successor was the filmmaker Jared Bush, who would oversee the studio’s films, series and associated projects and report to Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment. Deadline, reporting the same day, said the change took effect immediately and that Clark Spencer, a Disney veteran of three decades, would continue as president of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Wikipedia dates Spencer’s presidency from August 2019.

The studio also widened its output in those years. Deadline said Lee joined Disney in 2011 as a co-writer of Wreck-It Ralph, and that during her tenure the studio moved into animated series, among them Baymax!, Iwájú and Zootopia+. The same report gave release dates of 27 November 2024 for Moana 2 and 26 November 2025 for Zootopia 2, with Bush directing and writing the latter. Wikipedia says the studio opened a unit in Vancouver that began work in 2022 on long-form series for Disney+.

The address has stayed in Burbank. Wikipedia says that since 1995 the studio has been based in a building across Riverside Drive from the Walt Disney Studios lot, where the original Animation Building now holds corporate offices. Its lobby is topped by a large version of the sorcerer’s hat from the “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” segment of Fantasia, which is why staff call it the “hat building”. Wikipedia says the building was rededicated as the Roy E. Disney Animation Building in May 2010. Walt Disney Animation Studios is a division of Walt Disney Studios within the Walt Disney Company.

A whistling sailor, a flip-book and three words.

A game studio’s identity usually reaches players before the game does. The company logo appears on a splash screen or a short animated ident in the seconds while software loads, then again on store pages, trailers, packaging and the credits. Because those seconds repeat every time someone opens a game, the ident tends to be short, legible on a phone or a television, and quiet enough that it does not compete with the title that follows. Animation studios use the same device in front of their films, often with a brief piece of motion or a sound cue that returns from release to release.

Much of the visible branding, though, belongs to the work rather than the company. Characters, mascots and title logos carry the recognition, and a studio name may sit underneath them in small type. Some companies let a recurring character stand in for the studio; others keep the studio mark plain so that each new game or film can look different. Ownership changes add another layer: when a studio is bought or becomes independent, the parent’s mark may appear beside its own or drop away. For designers, the practical point is that a studio identity is a set of placements — a splash screen, a store icon, a credit line, a website — and each needs a version of the mark that works at its size and in its moment.

Walt Disney Animation Studios

Animator’s drawings, a ship’s wheel and a name underneath.

For decades the studio did not have an opening card of its own. Wikipedia says that until 2007 its films opened with the standard Walt Disney Pictures logo, and that a production logo based on Steamboat Willie was added starting with Meet the Robinsons. The Hollywood Reporter’s review of that film on 29 March 2007 noted that, at the beginning, a scene from the 1928 Mickey Mouse cartoon briefly hits the screen, and that the film closes on a quote attributed to Walt Disney about the studio “moving forward”.

The ident has a precise legal description. Deadline reported on 1 January 2024 that Disney revamped the studio’s logo in 2007 to include a snippet of Steamboat Willie’s Mickey and then registered the logo as a trademark, updated in early 2022. The newspaper quoted the filing: a motion mark of an animator’s drawings flipping one after another, turning into an animated clip of a mouse character tapping his foot and whistling while holding a ship’s wheel, followed by the words WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS underneath. That sequence is the clearest statement of the studio’s identity: pencil drawings that become a moving figure, then a name.

The same Deadline report explained why the ident outlived a change in copyright. Steamboat Willie entered the US public domain on 1 January 2024, but the newspaper noted that a trademark is separate from copyright and has no expiry date, and it quoted a Disney spokesperson saying that more modern versions of Mickey would remain unaffected. Wikipedia says the logo has stayed in use, and that it has appeared in variants, such as a pixelated version for Wreck-It Ralph in 2012. The story behind the character in the ident is recorded in the same paper: Mickey is whistling “Steamboat Bill”, the 1910 song that also gave Buster Keaton’s 1928 film its name.

The studio’s name also sits beside a parent identity. Before 2007, Wikipedia says, the studio’s films borrowed the Walt Disney Pictures card; the parent company’s own mark is covered in our Disney guide. The building in Burbank adds a physical emblem: Wikipedia says the sorcerer’s hat on the roof of the lobby gave the headquarters its informal name. In the centenary year, /Film reported on 7 October 2023 that the studio’s release Wish would be accompanied in cinemas by a short, Once Upon a Studio, starring Mickey Mouse with characters from across the studio’s feature films, an anniversary piece that turned the studio’s own catalogue into its subject.

For a design guide, Walt Disney Animation Studios shows how a studio can build a modern ident out of footage from 1928 and protect it as a motion mark, keeping the wordmark simple beneath it. Compare Pixar, a sister studio under the same owner since 2006, and DreamWorks Animation, another feature animation studio.
