r.e.m. beauty Brand Guidelines
A space-age dream.

Two constants: a chrome-and-pastel space palette and a retro-futurist wordmark. Abstract homage — not the r.e.m. beauty wordmark.
Makeup from a dream
r.e.m. beauty built a space-age dreamworld.
r.e.m. beauty is a lesson in a fully-committed thematic world. Launched in November 2021 by Ariana Grande and named after her song “R.E.M.” (which plays on REM sleep and dreaming), it wrapped makeup in a retro-futurist, space-age dreamscape — chrome, holographics and dreamy pastels — with music-and-space product names like the “At The Borderline” lip liner.
The design is the whole idea: liquid-chrome and polished-silver metallics, iridescent shimmer, and soft dreamy pastels (lilac, baby blue, pink) over deep space-black, under a lowercase “r.e.m. beauty” wordmark. It is 1960s–70s space futurism filtered through a pop dream.
(Honest notes: r.e.m. launched under a licensing deal with Forma Brands (Morphe’s parent). When Forma went bankrupt in early 2023, Ariana Grande bought r.e.m. out of the bankruptcy (reported ~$15 million) and now owns it independently (with a later Sandbridge minority investment); a professional CEO runs it. In the US it’s sold at Ulta (Sephora in Europe). No official brand hex is published.)
Colour
r.e.m. beauty lives in chrome and dreamy pastels. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
r.e.m. beauty’s identity is dreamy, chrome and celestial — a lilac, a baby blue, a space black, a chrome silver, and an off-white. The palette mixes liquid-chrome metallics and iridescent shimmer with soft dreamy pastels, often over deep space-black. It signals a playful, retro-futurist dreamworld rather than clinical or classic beauty. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a committed theme can be the entire identity. r.e.m.’s world is a pastel outer space. For designers, it is a reminder that fully committing to a specific, ownable theme (space-age dreaming) — chrome, holographics, pastels — makes every product feel part of one universe. The takeaways: pick a distinctive theme and commit totally; mix metallics with soft pastels for a dream feel; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using a deep indigo for small text so the chrome and pastels stay dreamy.
Typography
The wordmark spirit is a retro-futurist sans — dreamy and modern.
r.e.m. beauty’s identity carries a dreamy, retro-futurist, modern spirit — a lowercase “r.e.m. beauty” wordmark in a chrome-and-pastel dreamworld. A clean, slightly technical sans captures the mood: it is modern and space-age, the register of a brand named for a dream. Set against chrome and dreamy pastels, the type feels futuristic yet soft — exactly the space-age personality r.e.m. carries. It is dreamy rather than clinical, mirroring iridescent, holographic packaging. (r.e.m.’s real wordmark is a trademark and trade dress we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not published, so we don’t assert it.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a retro-futurist sans spirit,” not the r.e.m. logo. The type behaves like the brand: dreamy, futuristic and modern.

A theme worth buying back
r.e.m. beauty stands for the space-age dream.
r.e.m. beauty is a lesson in a theme so strong it survives a bankruptcy. Grande built a complete space-age dreamworld — chrome, holographics, pastels, dream-and-music names — that made the brand instantly distinctive. When its parent (Forma) collapsed, she bought the brand back rather than let it die, a testament to how much equity that thematic identity held. The differentiator is a fully-committed, ownable theme.
For designers and brand-builders, r.e.m. offers a clear takeaway: a distinctive theme is durable equity. The lessons: commit totally to one ownable world (space-age dreaming); use finish and colour (chrome, iridescence, pastels) to make it cohesive; and remember that a strong identity is what makes a brand worth rescuing. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: r.e.m. launched under Forma Brands, and Grande bought it out of Forma’s 2023 bankruptcy to run it independently — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. r.e.m. built a dream — proof that a committed theme can be the difference.
