Munich and Berlin

A company founded in 1889 that opened for business in Berlin in 1890.

Allianz began with two cities. English Wikipedia says the company was founded in Munich in 1889 but started its activities in Berlin on 5 February 1890. Its founders were Carl von Thieme, then director of the Munich Reinsurance Company, and Wilhelm von Finck, co-owner of the bank Merck Finck & Co. The joint company was entered in Berlin’s trade register as the Allianz Versicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft, the Allianz insurance company. German Wikipedia places the company’s office on Kochstraße in Berlin and lists a wider circle of founders drawn from the board of Munich Re and from German industry, with Thieme as the man who drove the project.

The name itself is a plain word. Allianz is German for alliance, and the company has kept it unchanged through more than a century of growth. German Wikipedia records that in 1958 the group introduced the advertising slogan “hoffentlich Allianz versichert”, roughly “hopefully insured with Allianz”, a line that tied the name to the idea of being covered. The slogan placed the company name inside an everyday German sentence about being insured, rather than beside it as a tagline.

Over the decades Allianz bought insurers in many countries, and the history of its brand is in large part a history of names being replaced by its own. English Wikipedia records that it acquired the British insurer Cornhill in 1986, which traded as Allianz Cornhill and then simply as Allianz Insurance plc from April 2007. In Belgium, AGF Belgium was rebranded as Allianz Belgium in November 2007. In Colombia, the local name Colseguros was retired in 2012 and the whole operation consolidated under the Allianz name, and in Turkey the Koç Allianz companies later traded under Allianz titles.

The legal form changed as well. English Wikipedia says Allianz announced in September 2005 that it would turn its holding company into a societas europaea, a European public company, and that the conversion was completed on 13 October 2006. The same passage notes that the group simplified its brand strategy from 2006.

A simplified mark and one name everywhere.

A major change to the Allianz identity came with that simplification. English Wikipedia says that from 2006 the group’s previous emblem was replaced by the current combination mark, which joins a symbol with the Allianz name. The change matched the wider move away from local brand names: as Cornhill, AGF Belgium and Colseguros gave way to Allianz, more of the group’s businesses came to share one name and one mark.

Not every name the group owns has been folded in. English Wikipedia says the British business owns Petplan, the pet insurance provider, which keeps its own name. After Allianz bought the general insurance business of the British mutual Liverpool Victoria, the same article says, it continued to trade as Liverpool Victoria General Insurance under a brand licence agreement with the mutual, due to end in 2026. When it took over the general insurance arm of Legal & General, that division was renamed Fairmead Insurance rather than given the Allianz name.

Allianz also puts its name on sport. English Wikipedia lists Formula One sponsorship from 2000, initially with the Williams team and from 2011 with Mercedes, and records that Allianz is the worldwide insurance partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games from 2022 to 2028.

In Australia, English Wikipedia says, Allianz became naming rights sponsor of the former Sydney Football Stadium in 2012, renewed the deal in 2022, and a rebuilt Allianz Stadium, designed by Cox Architecture, opened that year. English Wikipedia also lists the Allianz Parque football stadium in São Paulo, and German Wikipedia lists the Allianz Stadion in Vienna.

Insurers, banks and their marks.

Insurance identities have an unusual job: they sell a promise that may not be called on for decades, so the visual language tends to signal permanence rather than novelty. Many of the long-established houses reach for heraldry — eagles, lions, shields and robed allegorical figures — borrowing the vocabulary of civic seals and coats of arms to suggest that the company will still be standing when a policy matures. Over time, many of those emblems have been simplified, flattened and redrawn for screens, often keeping a single recognisable silhouette while losing the fine engraving of the originals.

A second family of marks reduces the name to a single letter or a short set of initials, which travels across languages and reads at small sizes on an app icon. Blue recurs across the sector because it is widely read as calm and dependable, though reds and deep greens also appear. Sponsorship adds another layer: stadium and arena naming rights, shirt deals and long-running mascot or character campaigns have put insurance names in front of audiences who never read a policy document, and the end of such a deal can be as visible as its start.

Allianz

From Fröttmaning to Twickenham.

In Munich the name is carried by the Allianz Arena, in the north of the city. English Wikipedia says construction began on 21 October 2002 and the stadium officially opened on 30 May 2005, designed by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. Its outer skin is made of inflated ETFE foil panels that can each be lit from inside, so that the exterior can change colour. Bayern Munich have played their home games there since the start of the 2005–06 season. Allianz bought the naming rights for 30 years, but the same article notes that the name cannot be used at FIFA and UEFA events, where the ground is called the Munich Football Arena and the logo is covered; during the 2006 World Cup it was known as the FIFA WM-Stadion München.

The model was carried to London in 2024. On 5 August 2024 the news agency AFP, as published by eNCA, reported that Twickenham would be renamed Allianz Stadium from September after the Rugby Football Union agreed a long-term sponsorship deal with the insurer. The opening fixture under the new name, it said, would be the women’s international between England and New Zealand on 14 September. AFP noted that, unlike some other grounds that keep their original name beside a sponsor’s, the word Twickenham would no longer appear in the official title.

The next day the Press Association, as published by the Jersey Evening Post on 6 August 2024, said the home of English rugby would be known as Allianz Stadium from 1 September. RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney told the BBC that the union had not “sold out”, and the report said Twickenham was the eighth sporting venue around the world to carry the Allianz branding.

For a design guide, Allianz shows how a single plain word, applied the same way on policies, racing cars and stadium façades, can stand in for many former local names. Compare Zurich Insurance, another insurer built around a single letter and name, and Generali, whose emblem is the lion of St Mark. For this guide we use blue, deep blue and pale sky with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
