From Rouen to Paris

A fire mutual of 1817, a regional group and a contested takeover.

AXA’s story starts in Normandy. English Wikipedia says the company grew out of a small mutual insurance society set up at Rouen in 1817 to insure against fire, by the architect Jacques-Théodore Le Carpentier and seventeen fellow property owners. Its formal name was a mouthful, the Compagnie d’assurances mutuelles contre l’incendie for the départements of Seine-Inférieure and Eure. Over the nineteenth century the business was split and rejoined, and from 1881 it traded as Ancienne Mutuelle, alongside a newly formed life company.

For much of its history the group remained regional. English Wikipedia records that it bought the Compagnie Parisienne de Garantie and the Mutuelle de l’Ouest and then, in 1978, renamed itself Mutuelles Unies, the united mutuals. That name described what the group was, a federation of mutual insurers.

The turning point was the arrival of Claude Bébéar, who had joined Ancienne Mutuelle de Rouen in 1958 and became general manager in 1974 and chairman the following year, according to English Wikipedia. In 1982 he won control of the Paris insurer Drouot after a contested battle in which Francis Bouygues had also tried to take control. The combined business was now known as Mutuelles Unies and Drouot, two names for one group.

French Wikipedia describes the problem that followed. Three years later, it says, the press was talking about the “Bébéar group”, and it became urgent to give the new combination an institutional name. The group went on to absorb the Présence group in 1986, and in 1988, under a protocol agreed with Assurances du Groupe de Paris, it moved its insurance business into the listed Compagnie du Midi, which then took the AXA name. English Wikipedia notes that this is why the listed company today is, in law, the former Compagnie du Midi.

Argos, Elan or AXA.

The search for a name has become part of the company’s story. English Wikipedia says that after the Drouot takeover, Bébéar commissioned a computer-assisted search for a short name that would be pronounced the same way in any language, in keeping with the group’s international ambitions. French Wikipedia says a list of names was put to management, which kept three: Argos, Axa and Elan. Bébéar made his decision in July 1985.

Elan had been the early favourite. English Wikipedia says it was abandoned when Canadian executives pointed out that élan is also the French word for a moose, and French Wikipedia records the same veto by the Canadian teams. Argos was also set aside, leaving the three letters.

Bébéar later explained his choice. English Wikipedia reports that he recalled the name had come out of nowhere, and that it appealed to him because the word began with A, the opening letter of the alphabet, which matched the group’s ambitions. It was short, easy to remember and read the same backwards. The company writes the name in capitals, but English Wikipedia stresses that AXA is not an acronym and does not stand for anything.

The brand was launched in July 1985, when Mutuelles Unies and Drouot began trading under it together. Ownership of the trademark itself took longer to settle. English Wikipedia says the brand was legally held by the holding company FINAXA until 16 December 2005, when FINAXA was absorbed into the listed AXA, bringing the brand into the listed company.

Sound has since joined the letters. French Wikipedia says that in 2019 AXA rolled out a sonic identity within its brand platform “Know You Can”, made by the agency Sixième Son. The sound logo is built on a single note repeated ten times, and it was deployed internationally across the brand’s points of contact.

Insurers, banks and their marks.

Insurance identities have an unusual job: they sell a promise that may not be called on for decades, so the visual language tends to signal permanence rather than novelty. Many of the long-established houses reach for heraldry — eagles, lions, shields and robed allegorical figures — borrowing the vocabulary of civic seals and coats of arms to suggest that the company will still be standing when a policy matures. Over time, many of those emblems have been simplified, flattened and redrawn for screens, often keeping a single recognisable silhouette while losing the fine engraving of the originals.

A second family of marks reduces the name to a single letter or a short set of initials, which travels across languages and reads at small sizes on an app icon. Blue recurs across the sector because it is widely read as calm and dependable, though reds and deep greens also appear. Sponsorship adds another layer: stadium and arena naming rights, shirt deals and long-running mascot or character campaigns have put insurance names in front of audiences who never read a policy document, and the end of such a deal can be as visible as its start.

AXA

One name for UAP, Equitable and a training ground.

A name built to travel was soon tested abroad. English Wikipedia says AXA moved into the United States in 1991 by investing in the Equitable Life Assurance Society, and in 1995 took majority control of the Australian life insurer National Mutual. French Wikipedia says both businesses later moved to the AXA brand: The Equitable in 1997, as AXA Equitable, and National Mutual in 1999, as AXA Asia Pacific.

At home a bigger test was the merger with UAP. English Wikipedia dates the agreement to 11 November 1996. On 30 March 1997 the trade weekly Business Insurance, in a report by Stacy Shapiro from Paris, said AXA and UAP would merge formally in May, that the two had announced the merger the previous November, and that the company worldwide would simply be called AXA. The older UAP name, which French Wikipedia traces to a 1968 merger of l’Union, l’Urbaine and La Séquanaise, was not kept beside it.

The same approach has been applied to sport. On 28 October 2020 the trade site SportsVenue Business reported that Liverpool FC had expanded its partnership with AXA to include the naming rights of the club’s new training centre in Kirkby, designed by the architects KSS. The facility, it said, would be officially known as the AXA Training Centre, and AXA would become the club’s official training partner, covering all training apparel. The report said the senior squad and youth sides would share a combined training facility, after seventy years at Melwood.

Across these changes, the three letters have stayed constant while the businesses behind them have changed from a Rouen mutual to a Paris-listed group.

For a design guide, AXA shows how a name chosen for its sound, its brevity and its place in the alphabet can carry one identity across many acquired companies. Compare BNP Paribas, another Paris group built from merged names, and Generali, an insurer whose emblem is the lion of St Mark. For this guide we use deep blue, red and pale blue with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
