The coastal table

Costa Nova makes relaxed, coastal reactive-glaze stoneware in Portugal.

Costa Nova is a lesson in a relaxed coastal register as the identity. A Portuguese tableware brand from the Aveiro coast, it makes durable, hand-finished stoneware in reactive glazes — relaxed, Mediterranean, casual-lifestyle dinnerware for the everyday table, made in Portugal and built around a genuine sustainability story.

Its identity is the coastal table. Costa Nova’s casual, reactive-glazed stoneware — easy, warm, made for daily use — is the work it is known for. The coast, made a table setting. A brand with the sea in its name.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Costa Nova is not an independent studio — it is a brand of Grestel, a Portuguese ceramics company founded in 1998, now presenting itself as the “Costa Nova Industria Group,” with a sibling brand, Casafina; the Costa Nova brand dates to around 2005. On production, the strong and verifiable point: it is genuinely made in Portugal, in Grestel’s own factories in Vagos, in the Aveiro district, where the group says it designs about 90% of its pieces in-house. On ownership specifics, we are careful: we do not assert any public-listing or outside-investor status, which we could not verify, and we do not name founders. On sustainability, it makes real, specific claims — Ecogres, a recycled-material clay developed with the University of Aveiro, plus solar power, water reuse and waste recycling — which we report as the company’s own claims rather than audited facts. One naming note: Costa Nova is a real seaside village near Aveiro, known for its candy-striped houses; the brand is named after it but is a distinct company, and we don’t treat the striped-house motif as its trademark. Its glaze lines and patterns are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Costa Nova lives in a sea-blue-and-sand palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Costa Nova’s identity is relaxed, coastal and warm — a sea blue, an ink, a sand, a graphite, and a foam white. The palette leans sea blue and sand: the register of the Atlantic coast and warm stoneware. It signals ease and lifestyle over formality. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a sea-blue-and-sand palette signals a coastal identity. Costa Nova’s world is a relaxed, coastal, warm object. For designers, it is a reminder that a palette drawn from the coast — sea blue, warm sand — can carry a brand built on relaxed, everyday lifestyle. Because a mid sea-blue can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: pick a place and a mood; keep it relaxed; make it locally; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a coastal geometric — relaxed, warm, everyday.

Costa Nova’s identity carries a relaxed, warm, everyday spirit — an easy object, not a formal one. A coastal geometric sans captures the mood: friendly, modern and unfussy, the register of casual coastal living. Set in a sea-blue-and-sand palette, the coastal geometric feels relaxed and warm — exactly the personality Costa Nova carries. It is easy rather than formal, mirroring casual, reactive-glazed stoneware. (Costa Nova’s real glazes, lines and wordmark are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a coastal-geometric spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: relaxed, warm and everyday.

A relaxed coastal register as identity

Costa Nova stands for the coastal table.

Costa Nova is a lesson in making a relaxed coastal register the identity. A sea-blue-and-sand palette, a coastal geometric and casual, reactive-glazed stoneware make relaxed coastal living the whole brand — easy, warm and everyday. The register is the differentiator. The differentiator is a consistent, relaxed lifestyle mood, made real by genuine Portuguese manufacturing and an explicit sustainability programme.

Put to work, the identity is a mood plus honest making as design. A brand building in this spirit would commit to a clear lifestyle register and back it with real production and real sustainability, so the customer buys into a feeling and a provenance rather than a pattern. The lesson Costa Nova teaches is that a relaxed register plus genuine local making can build a brand: the coastal mood gives it warmth, and the Portuguese factories give it substance — with the group ownership and self-reported claims stated honestly. The register is the personality, and the making is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Costa Nova offers a clear takeaway: own a lifestyle register, and make it for real. The lessons: pick a mood; keep it relaxed; make it locally; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Costa Nova is a brand of Grestel (founded 1998; the Costa Nova brand around 2005), genuinely made in Portugal in Grestel’s own Aveiro factories — so it is a group brand rather than an independent studio, we don’t assert any listing or investor status, and its Ecogres and sustainability claims are the company’s own; its glaze lines are described but never reproduced, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Costa Nova made the coastal table the brand — proof that a relaxed register can be the difference.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Costa Nova’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Costa Nova or Grestel, and it does not promote the purchase or use of any product. The Costa Nova name, wordmark and its glaze lines and patterns are trademarks/works of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and glaze-texture swatches); no glaze, pattern or wordmark is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public sources (costanova.com; grestel.pt): Costa Nova is a Portuguese tableware brand from the Aveiro coast (a brand of Grestel, founded 1998; the Costa Nova brand dating to around 2005) known for relaxed, coastal, reactive-glaze stoneware. Honest notes: it is not independent — it is a Grestel group brand (with sibling brand Casafina) — and we do not assert any public-listing or investor status; it is genuinely made in Portugal in Grestel’s own Aveiro factories; and its sustainability claims (including the Ecogres recycled-clay material) are the company’s own. Its glaze lines are described but never reproduced. No official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
