Godawan Brand Guidelines
The desert single malt named for a bird.

The Spirit of the Desert
A single malt built around an endangered bird.
Godawan is an Indian single malt whisky made by Diageo India and launched in 2022. The trade site FoodTechBiz reported on 27 March 2022 that it would go on sale first in Rajasthan and Delhi, then across India, and in Dubai from April. A Diageo India release dated 31 May 2022 said the brand had been launched in Jaipur, had shown its idea of “purposeful luxury” at the 75th Cannes Film Festival, and was making its international debut in Dubai under the theme “The Spirit of the Desert.”
The name is the local word for the Great Indian Bustard, a bird Diageo India says also lives in Rajasthan. Diageo India’s brand page calls it majestic and endangered, makes it the brand’s mark of heritage and states a permanent commitment to its conservation; the company has said that every bottle contributes to protecting the bird. Asian Trader noted in December 2024 that the IUCN Red List classes the bustard as Critically Endangered.
Godawan belongs to a company with a long Indian history. Diageo India’s website is that of United Spirits Limited, which English Wikipedia traces to McDowell and Company, a trading house founded in 1826. Diageo bought 10% of United Spirits in May 2013, raised that to 25.02% in July 2013 and has held a majority since 2014, Wikipedia says. United Spirits also owns McDowell’s. Asian Trader reported that Godawan was developed under The Good Craft Co., Diageo India’s craft and innovation unit.

Six-row barley and desert heat.
Godawan is made at Alwar, in Rajasthan. English Wikipedia lists Alwar among United Spirits’ operating units; Diageo India’s release of June 2025 says the whisky is crafted at the Alwar distillery, and its brand page describes that distillery as “water positive,” a claim we give as the company’s.
The company builds the story on climate and grain. At launch, FoodTechBiz reported, Diageo said Godawan used locally sourced six-row barley traceable to clusters of Rajasthani farms, was distilled by slow trickle, matured at temperatures reaching 100°F with a larger-than-usual angels’ share, and was finished in casks prepared with Indian botanicals. The Bengaluru release of May 2022 added that six-row barley needs less water.
The core range is two whiskies. Asian Trader reported the brand’s UK debut in London in December 2024 with Rich & Rounded and Fruit & Spice, both at 46%; The Whiskey Wash calls them Godawan 01 and Godawan 02. Limited editions followed. Godawan 100, announced on 20 May 2023 for the brand’s first anniversary, was a batch of 100 bottles, each with its own label showing the bird and each in a case made from old bourbon casks, Diageo India said. It was launched at a one-day event at Alila Fort for 30 guests, with Nagada drummers and a seed-making conservation activity; Maharawal Chaitanya Raj Singh of Jaisalmer and the photographer Amit Pasricha, founder of India Lost & Found, were quoted in the company’s account, which also tied the edition to the Bishnoi community’s conservation work. A Triple Cask travel-retail edition, announced in June 2025 for Dubai Duty Free and Bengaluru Duty Free, was finished in PX sherry, virgin oak and cherry wood casks and, the company said, inspired by the region’s jaali woodwork. That release described Godawan as offering five expressions, each with its own cask finish, and quoted Praveen Someshwar, Diageo India’s chief executive, on airports as places where travellers discover brands.

Asian craft spirits.
The six brands in this group are all spirits from Asia: Omar, Godawan, Kamet, Solan Gold, Three Societies and Kiyomi. Five are whisky names, from Taiwan, India and South Korea, and one is a rum from Okinawa. Spirits brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from small independent distilleries to labels that belong to much larger drinks groups or state-linked companies, and a single name can be sold everywhere from a duty-free shelf to a bar list abroad.
A spirits brand’s identity is usually carried less by the liquid than by a label, a name and the place it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands or names, sourced its grain or cane from elsewhere, or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its spirit is actually distilled, matured and bottled.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its spirit is made and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

A carved display serif — a nod to a wordmark drawn from a traditional local typeface. (Specimen set in Marcellus, a serif STAND-IN; NOT the Godawan logo.)
Godawan
A hand-drawn bird as a seal.
Godawan’s identity was designed by Butterfly Cannon, an independent British brand design agency. Transform magazine reported in June 2023 that the agency built the brand around a design platform it called “desert bloom,” a tribute to Rajasthan; that the wordmark is a modern take on a traditional local typeface; and that a hand-drawn illustration of the bird acts as a seal of quality and of the brand’s conservation commitment. Hiren Dedhia, Diageo India’s design head, praised the agency’s work across every touch point.
The paper maker Fedrigoni’s magazine Pulp added that the patternwork draws on the region’s crafts and that the label is printed on Materica Gesso, a paper chosen, Butterfly Cannon’s Chris Joscelyne said, because it is recyclable while still feeling hand-made.
The most elaborate pack is Godawan 173, a collector’s edition of 173 individually illustrated ceramic bottles, each standing for one surviving bustard. Butterfly Cannon’s entry in Creative Review says the team worked with local artisans to bring Jaipur Blue Pottery into contemporary designs, using quartz, salts and natural glazes, and launched the edition at the Savoy during London Fashion Week. The entry credits Butterfly Cannon’s founder and creative director Jon Davies and creative director Arron Egan, with Diageo India’s chief innovation officer Vikram Damodaran and design head Hiren Dedhia on the client side. The Whiskey Wash reported in May 2026 that the bottle was made by the blue-pottery artisan Leela Bordia, and that the whisky inside had matured for more than nine years in ex-bourbon, oloroso and PX sherry casks.
For a design guide, Godawan shows how a new whisky can borrow its look from a place — its pottery, its lettering and an endangered bird — rather than from Scotch tradition. Compare Indri, another Indian single malt launched in 2022, and Amrut, the Bengaluru single-malt distiller. For this guide we use Jaipur blue, desert sand and terracotta with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
