Grilli Type Brand Guidelines
Swiss, not neutral.

Two constants: a confident colour palette and a Swiss grotesque register. Abstract homage — not the Grilli wordmark or its GT typefaces.
Swiss, not neutral
Grilli Type gave Swiss precision a point of view.
Grilli Type is a lesson in Swiss craft with an attitude. Founded in 2009 by Noël Leu and Thierry Blancpain, based in Lucerne, Switzerland with a distributed team, it is an independent foundry behind hugely used families — GT America, GT Walsheim, GT Sectra, GT Pressura, GT Alpina, GT Flexa and more (every family carries the “GT” prefix).
Its brand design is Swiss-precise but pointedly opinionated. The foundry’s own line — “despite our Swiss base, we are not neutral” — is the whole personality: clean and rigorous, yes, but confident, colourful and full of storytelling. Grilli is famous for lavish per-typeface minisites and elaborate printed specimens, treating each release like an event.
(Honest notes: the single most common mistake is to file Grilli under “neutral Swiss” type — they explicitly reject that cliché. GT Walsheim draws on lettering by Swiss poster artist Otto Baumberger. And there is no official brand hex — the identity is confident and varies per project, so the colours here are an unofficial interpretation.)
Colour
Grilli Type lives in confident colour. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Grilli Type’s identity is confident, colourful and precise — a signal red, an ochre, a steel blue, a paper, and an ink. Rather than muted neutrality, Grilli leans on bold, deliberate colour in its specimens and campaigns. It signals a foundry with opinions, not a beige Swiss stereotype. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is colour gives Swiss precision a personality. Grilli’s world is a confident, well-set poster. For designers, it is a reminder that rigour and personality are not opposites — you can keep Swiss discipline and still be loud, opinionated and colourful. The takeaways: pair precise typography with confident colour; treat each release as an event with its own palette; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using a deep red for small text so the brights stay confident.
Typography
The register is a Swiss grotesque — precise but opinionated.
Grilli Type’s identity carries a precise but opinionated spirit — Swiss rigour with a point of view. A crisp grotesque captures the mood: it is exact yet confident, the register of a foundry that is Swiss but refuses to be neutral. Set against confident colour, the grotesque feels precise and opinionated — exactly the personality Grilli carries. It is rigorous yet expressive, mirroring a lavish specimen. (Grilli’s real wordmark and its GT retail typefaces are commercial products and trademarks we name but do not reproduce or set text in; the exact brand typeface is not ours to use.) Because those faces are not ours to set, the honest description is “a Swiss grotesque spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: precise, confident and opinionated.

Precision with opinions
Grilli Type stands for confident Swiss craft.
Grilli Type is a lesson in rigour plus personality. Swiss precision, confident colour and lavish specimen culture prove a foundry can be disciplined and opinionated at once — the antidote to “neutral Swiss” cliché. The point of view is the differentiator. The differentiator is precise, confident, opinionated craft.
For designers and brand-builders, Grilli offers a clear takeaway: you can keep the discipline and lose the blandness. The lessons: hold Swiss rigour but add a point of view; use confident colour and treat releases as events; and let storytelling accompany the craft. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Grilli is emphatically not “neutral,” GT Walsheim nods to Otto Baumberger, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Grilli made precision opinionated — proof that a point of view can be the difference.
