Dinamo Brand Guidelines
Fonts are tools.

Two constants: an experimental palette and a tool-like type register. Abstract homage — not the Dinamo wordmark or its ABC typefaces.
Fonts are tools
Dinamo treats type as software you can play with.
Dinamo is a lesson in type as a playful, usable tool. Founded around 2013 by Johannes Breyer and Fabian Harb and now based in Berlin, the independent studio (widely known as “ABC Dinamo,” after its abcdinamo.com home and the “ABC” prefix on its families) makes experimental, avant-garde type — ABC Diatype, ABC Favorit, ABC Monument Grotesk, ABC Whyte and ABC Arizona among the best known.
Its brand personality is experimental, playful and tool-driven. The ethos — “fonts are (great looking) tools” — runs through everything, from a cheeky mouth motif to a genuinely useful free web tool, Font Gauntlet (for proofing and animating variable fonts), under its Dinamo Darkroom software imprint. There’s a radio show (foNTS), a publishing imprint (Editions) and even physical objects (Hardware).
(Honest notes: the “ABC” prefix is real — widely reported as added around 2021 for searchability and trademark distinctiveness, which we present as reported. Its founding city isn’t stated on the site — the founders met at the Basel School of Design, but we don’t assert a founding city — and it’s Berlin-based today. And there is no official brand hex, so the colours here are an unofficial interpretation.)
Colour
Dinamo lives in experimental colour. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Dinamo’s identity is experimental, electric and playful — an electric blue, a hot pink, an acid green, a panel, and an ink. Rather than a fixed brand colour, Dinamo uses bold, shifting, unexpected colour across its site and tools. It signals a foundry that treats type as a lively, hackable tool rather than a solemn artifact. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is experimental colour signals a playful, tool-driven brand. Dinamo’s world is a bright design lab. For designers, it is a reminder that a foundry (or any product) can feel alive and generous by treating its identity as something to experiment with — shifting palettes, free tools, a sense of play. The takeaways: use bold, shifting colour for an experimental brand; ship genuinely useful free tools; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using electric blue for small text so the brights stay lively.
Typography
The register is a tool-like mono — playful and precise.
Dinamo’s identity carries a playful, experimental, tool-driven spirit — “fonts are tools,” shifting colour, a free type tool. A monospaced, tool-like register captures the mood: it is technical yet playful, the feel of software you can tinker with. Set against experimental colour, the mono feels playful and precise — exactly the tool-maker personality Dinamo carries. It is hackable rather than solemn, mirroring an interactive font tool. (Dinamo’s real wordmark and its ABC retail typefaces are commercial products and trademarks we name but do not reproduce or set text in; the exact brand typeface is not ours to use.) Because those faces are not ours to set, the honest description is “a tool-like mono spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: playful, technical and experimental.

Type as a tool
Dinamo stands for playful, usable type.
Dinamo is a lesson in making type feel alive and usable. An experimental palette, a playful voice and genuinely useful free tools turn a foundry into a design lab — type as software you can play with, not just buy. The playful, tool-driven ethos is the differentiator. The differentiator is an experimental, generous, tool-first identity.
For designers and brand-builders, Dinamo offers a clear takeaway: a product can build love by being playful and generous. The lessons: treat identity as an experiment, not a fixed rule; ship free tools that help your audience; and keep a sense of humour. It is also a reminder to report fairly: the “ABC” prefix rationale is reported (not sourced from a quote), the founding city is unstated, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Dinamo made type a tool — proof that playfulness can be the difference.
