A flooring contractor in 1973

A stock business, a registered name and a family home.

Karndean Designflooring is a British luxury vinyl flooring company based in Evesham, Worcestershire, where it has its head office and a design showroom. The Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce described it in October 2023 as an Evesham luxury vinyl flooring company. The company’s own account of its history begins five decades earlier, in 1973, with its founder Mike Walker.

Karndean says Walker was a UK flooring contractor who had grown frustrated by long lead times on commercial flooring stock. According to the company’s anniversary history, he registered the Karndean name and set up a business called Carpet & Flooring Supplies, which held stock of several kinds of floor covering for same-day collection. The company’s UK “Our story” page adds that he started the business from his family home and describes him as a flooring installer whose goal was to make flooring products more widely available.

The business grew as a supplier before it became a brand. Karndean says that within a few years Walker’s business covered the Midlands, the North West and the South West of England, and that in 1984 Karndean opened in Australia. Over those years, the company says, Walker came to see the potential of luxury vinyl, a product then gaining ground in commercial interiors as glue-down planks, and saw an opening for it in homes.

The decisive change came in 1991. Karndean says that in that year Walker sold his stores and chose to focus solely on luxury vinyl, with the aim of introducing the British public to it. Working from home with a small team, according to the same history, he began creating his own flooring designs and travelled to find inspiration in natural wood and stone. The company dates its Knight Tile range, which it describes as a dedicated residential range, to 1996.

From a home office to a group with a holding company.

Karndean’s history is told largely through the people who stayed with it. The company says its global chairman, Peter Wood, joined in 1988 and has held senior roles including managing director in Australia and New Zealand and chief executive in the United States. It says Dan Lovell, managing director in Australia and New Zealand, began his career in the founder’s family home and has also been the UK and global marketing director. In the company’s words, a number of early employees who worked in the original home office and warehouse are still with the business.

The company says that within a few years Karndean Designflooring became a global brand, with operations in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Its websites today are organised by region, with separate sites for the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and with a separate route for commercial customers.

Leadership is now arranged at two levels. The Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce reported on 4 October 2023 that Fleur Carson had been appointed managing director of the UK business from 1 October 2023, reporting to Ed Perrin, chief executive of Karndean Holdings Ltd. The same report said she succeeded Paul Barratt, who had led the UK business for eleven years, and that she had led the opening of Karndean’s commercial showroom in Clerkenwell, London. Before joining Karndean she had worked at Forbo Flooring Systems and Bonar Floors, according to the report, and the business had marked its 50th anniversary earlier in 2023.

On ownership, Karndean describes itself on its UK site as “proudly family-owned”, and its anniversary history credits the founder’s passion and the support of the family for the company’s growth. The company also says that all its designs are created in house, and that its designers still travel to collect samples of natural timber and stone.

The brands in this group are all flooring names, covering carpet, laminate, vinyl and wood. Flooring brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family firms that still tell their history through a founder to names that now belong to much larger manufacturing groups, and a single brand can be sold through independent retailers, home-improvement chains and commercial specifiers at the same time.

A flooring brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single product than by a name on a sample board, a swatch label, a carton or a showroom display, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the town where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its floors are actually made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its flooring is made and how its labels and showrooms have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Karndean

A name registered before the product existed.

The most unusual thing about Karndean’s identity is its order of events. The company says Mike Walker registered the Karndean name in 1973, when the business was a supplier of many kinds of floor covering trading as Carpet & Flooring Supplies. The luxury vinyl that the name now stands for came later, after the 1991 decision to sell the stores and concentrate on a single product. The name was in place long before the product it is now attached to.

The full trading name adds a second idea. Karndean Designflooring joins “design” and “flooring” into one word, which puts the emphasis on the pattern and look of a floor rather than on its material. That fits the company’s own description of its work: designs inspired by wood and stone, created in house, by designers who travel to source samples of natural timber and stone.

For most customers the brand appears in small and physical forms: sample boards and swatches, retailers’ displays, and the showroom in Evesham, where the UK site offers design consultations in person or online. The Clerkenwell commercial showroom named in 2023 gives the brand a London address aimed at architects and specifiers.

The company’s regional structure shapes the identity too. Karndean has been in Australia since 1984, by its own account, and today presents itself through separate regional sites and a commercial route. The same name therefore has to work across markets on different continents, as the label on a residential plank and as a name specified on a commercial project, while the company continues to tell its history as a family story that began in a home office.

For a design guide, Karndean shows how a name registered by a flooring supplier in 1973 can become the brand of a single product, built on designs drawn from wood and stone and on a history told through the people who joined early. Compare it with COREtec, another vinyl-plank name, and Pergo, another hard-surface name. For this guide we use walnut, limestone and slate with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
