Keppel Brand Guidelines
A harbour name, a shipyard and one short word over many businesses.

A name taken from the water
Singapore, 1848 to 1968.
The Keppel name was in Singapore long before the company. It belongs to a stretch of water on the island’s southern shore, and the company took it from there. The National Heritage Board’s Roots.gov.sg page on Keppel Harbour, last updated in October 2020, says the harbour has been a maritime gateway for international trade since the late 19th century, and that it was originally known as New Harbour before being renamed in honour of Admiral Henry Keppel in 1900.
The man behind the name was a British naval officer. A Roots.gov.sg story on Keppel Bay says Henry Keppel sailed to Singapore as a midshipman in 1832, and later returned as captain of the Royal Navy frigate Meander, which was part of colonial efforts to clear the Straits of pirates. It was aboard the Meander, in May 1848, that he found the deep-water anchorage that made the waters a natural harbour, according to the same story.
His survey became the basis for a new port. The Roots.gov.sg story says the plans formed on that survey led to a new harbour that was completed in 1886. It was called New Harbour until Keppel returned to Singapore in 1900 as an admiral, and the acting governor, Sir Alexander Swettenham, renamed it after him, the story says. English Wikipedia gives the same sequence for the company’s name: Keppel derives from the officer, by way of the harbour.
The harbour then grew into a place of docks. The Keppel Bay story describes graving docks built along the shore from the mid-19th century onward, and later the King’s Dock, opened in 1913, with the Queen’s Dock added in the 1950s. Ships from many countries stopped there for repair and refuel, and workers removed rust and barnacles and repainted hulls. That working waterfront is the setting from which the company would take both its trade and its name.
The company itself dates from 1968. English Wikipedia says Keppel Shipyard was founded that year at Keppel Harbour in Tanjong Pagar, when the harbour was taken over from the British Royal Navy after its withdrawal, and it names Temasek Holdings as the founder of the shipyard. The name on the gate was neither a founder’s surname nor a coined word but a place name from 1900.
Colour
From shipyard to group.
The shipyard did not stay a shipyard. In the 1970s and 1980s, Wikipedia says, the company focused on diversification and regional growth, setting up an overseas venture, Keppel Philippines Shipyard, in 1975 with Filipino partners. In 1983 it acquired the Straits Steamship Company, a shipping company with land holdings in Singapore, and renamed it Straits Steamship Land; that business is now Keppel Land. The pattern of the name was set early: the word Keppel came first, and the business description followed.
The same habit carried into other fields. Wikipedia says the group moved into banking in 1990, and that in 1997 Keppel Bank combined with Tat Lee Bank to form Keppel TatLee Bank. In 2001 the group divested its banking and financial services, and its offshore and marine businesses, including Keppel Shipyard, Keppel FELS and Keppel Singmarine, were brought together as the Keppel Offshore & Marine group in 2002. Each of these names used the parent word as a prefix, which made the family resemblance obvious even when the businesses had little in common.
The physical link to the harbour loosened as well. In 1999, according to Wikipedia, Keppel Shipyard moved its operations base from Keppel Harbour to Jurong, to yards around Tuas, Gul and Benoi, and the land at the old harbour was developed into a waterfront residential area. The Roots.gov.sg Keppel Bay story describes the same shift: shipyard activity moved to Tuas, and the docks gave way to waterfront homes. The name, though, stayed with the company that had left the place.
The last shipbuilding piece was sold in 2023. Wikipedia says Sembcorp Marine completed its acquisition of Keppel Corporation’s offshore and marine division on 28 February 2023, and Sembcorp Marine’s shareholders approved a change of its own name to Seatrium on 27 April 2023. A group that began as a shipyard no longer owned one.
The corporate name followed. In an announcement to the Singapore Exchange, the company said shareholders passed the resolution to change its name from Keppel Corporation Limited to Keppel Ltd. at an extraordinary general meeting on 18 October 2023, and that the change took effect on 1 January 2024. Its trading counter name became simply “Keppel” from 4 January 2024, the announcement said. Wikipedia links the rename to the completion of the group’s restructuring into a global asset manager and operator.
Typography
Parent names and many businesses.
A corporate group’s identity has a different job from a single product’s. It has to sit above many businesses at once, often in places the public never sees: an annual report, a shipyard gate, a share certificate, a letterhead, a hard hat. That tends to push group marks towards restraint. Many began with a founder’s name or a place name, and some compressed it into a monogram or a set of initials that could be stamped, embroidered or painted at any size.
Over time the mark usually becomes a parent signature rather than a face. Operating units keep their own names and colours, while the group mark appears in a fixed position as an endorsement, a small line of type or a symbol in a corner. Designers working at this level spend much of their effort on rules for how parent and child marks sit together.
Renames are part of the story too. When a group spins off a division, merges two lines or shifts what it does, the name and mark are often rewritten to match, and older letterforms linger on buildings and archives for years. For designers, the useful lessons are about durability, hierarchy and how a single sign can carry a long and changing history.

A grotesque sans — after a short, single-word corporate name. (Specimen set in Archivo, a sans STAND-IN; NOT the Keppel logo or any Keppel typeface.)
Keppel
One word, four platforms.
Since 2024 the group has been organised into four business platforms, Wikipedia says: Infrastructure, Real Estate, Connectivity and Fund Management & Investment. The naming habit that began with Keppel Philippines Shipyard and Keppel Land continues inside them. Wikipedia lists units such as Keppel Infrastructure, Keppel Land, Keppel Data Centres and Keppel Capital, along with the mobile operator M1, which keeps its own name inside the Connectivity platform.
That mix shows two ways a parent mark can work. In most units the word Keppel leads and a plain description follows, so the parent name does the work of a logo in running text. In a few cases, such as M1, a business with its own public name sits inside the group without taking the prefix. The rename to Keppel Ltd. trimmed the parent name itself down to the single word that already appeared everywhere, and the trading counter now shows only that word.
The heritage of the name is still visible in Singapore’s geography. Keppel Harbour and Keppel Bay sit on the southern waterfront where the company began, and the Roots.gov.sg pages tie the harbour’s name to the admiral and his 1848 survey. Wikipedia says the group’s headquarters is Keppel Bay Tower at HarbourFront, so the corporate name and the place name still share an address on the same shore.
For a design guide, Keppel shows how a place name can become a corporate name, survive the move away from that place and the sale of the business it first named, and end up as a single word over a very different group. Compare Singtel and DBS Bank, two other Singapore corporate names with guides of their own. For this guide we use harbour teal, a deep harbour blue and ink with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
