Catan’s German home

Kosmos publishes across games, books and science.

Kosmos is a lesson in a heritage publisher spanning play and learning. Its full name is Franckh-Kosmos, a Stuttgart media house with deep roots — the Franckh publishing house dates to 1822, and the “Kosmos” science brand grew from an early-1900s nature society and magazine. Today it publishes books, science-experiment kits and board games under one long-trusted name (we hold the exact heritage dates loosely — 1822 for Franckh, early-1900s for the Kosmos brand).

Its most important game credential is a direct link to the biggest name in the hobby: ⭐ Kosmos is the original German publisher of Catan (Die Siedler von Catan, Klaus Teuber, 1995). ⚠️ To be precise — Kosmos publishes Catan in Germany, but it doesn’t own the Catan IP (that’s Catan GmbH) and the US publisher is Catan Studio (Asmodee); Kosmos is the game’s German home, not its owner.

Beyond Catan, Kosmos owns two signatures of its own. ⭐⭐ EXIT: The Game is its wildly successful escape-room-in-a-box series (co-designed by Inka & Markus Brand) — you write on, fold and even destroy the components to solve the puzzles; the first titles won the Kennerspiel des Jahres 2017 and the line has grown to tens of millions of copies. ⭐ Its long-running two-player games line (“Spiele für Zwei,” home to Lost Cities and Targi) carved out the couples/duo niche. And the classic KOSMOS science kits (chemistry sets, telescopes) still carry the brand into education (distributed in North America as Thames & Kosmos). (Honest notes: heritage dates are hedged; Kosmos publishes but doesn’t own Catan; EXIT was co-designed by the Brands; family/ownership status is hedged; and no official brand hex is published.)

Colour

Kosmos lives in a teal-and-yellow palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Kosmos’ identity is bright, curious and trustworthy — a clean teal, ink black, and a science yellow. The palette reads as a publisher of play and learning: the fresh teal of the Kosmos brand and the yellow of a science kit, grounded by ink. It’s a knowledge-and-play world that signals curiosity, quality and family trust. It’s a teal-and-yellow palette that signals a heritage games-and-science house. The honest caveat: Kosmos publishes no official brand hex, so the teal, ink and yellow here are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a teal-and-yellow palette signals curiosity and trust. Kosmos’ world reads as fresh and dependable. For designers, it’s a reminder that a clean teal with a bright accent yellow reads as both educational and playful — right for a house that spans games and science. The takeaways: pair a fresh teal with a bright accent for curiosity and trust; let breadth (play + learning) shape the palette; and treat any single hex as unofficial when there’s no published spec.

Typography

The wordmark spirit is a clean geometric sans — bright and trustworthy.

Kosmos’ identity carries a clean, curious, trustworthy spirit — a “Kosmos” wordmark whose tidy geometry matches a publisher of games, books and science kits. A clean geometric sans captures the mood: it’s bright and dependable, matching a heritage house that families trust across play and learning. Set against a teal palette, the geometric sans feels fresh and clear — exactly the Catan’s-home, EXIT, science-kit personality Kosmos carries. It’s clean rather than ornate, mirroring an educational, well-made box. (Kosmos’ real wordmark is a trademark we describe but don’t reproduce.) Because the exact mark isn’t ours to use, the honest description is “a clean geometric sans spirit,” not the Kosmos logo. The type behaves like the brand: clean, curious and trustworthy.

Trust across play and learning as the difference

Kosmos spans games and science.

Kosmos is a lesson in one trusted name spanning play and learning. Most game companies stay in games; Kosmos, by heritage, sits across books, science kits and board games, and that breadth is its quiet strength. The same brand that puts Catan on German tables also puts a chemistry set or a telescope in a child’s hands and an EXIT escape box in a family’s game night — so “Kosmos” signals trust in both fun and education. That lets it own niches others miss (the two-player line, the escape-room category, science kits) under a single, long-credible name. It’s a reminder that a heritage brand’s reach can be a feature: play and learning aren’t separate audiences when one trusted publisher serves both.

For designers and brand-builders, Kosmos offers a clear takeaway: a long-trusted name can credibly span adjacent worlds (here, play and learning). The lessons: let heritage trust carry a brand into related categories (games, science, books); own specific niches under that umbrella (escape games, two-player, science kits); and keep the facts precise — Kosmos is a Stuttgart heritage publisher and the German home of Catan. It’s also a reminder to keep it honest: the heritage dates are hedged; Kosmos publishes but does not own Catan (Catan GmbH does; the US publisher is Catan Studio/Asmodee); EXIT was co-designed by the Brands; and no official brand hex is published, so the palette here is an interpretation. Kosmos spans games and science — proof that trust across worlds can be the difference.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Kosmos’ visual identity; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Kosmos. The Kosmos, Catan and EXIT names and logos are trademarks of their respective owners (Franckh-Kosmos; Catan GmbH) — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and swatches), not Kosmos assets, and no logo is reproduced. Facts reported from public sources (kosmos.de, Wikipedia): Kosmos (Franckh-Kosmos) is a Stuttgart, Germany media publisher with deep heritage (the Franckh house dates to 1822; the Kosmos science brand to the early 1900s) that publishes books, science-experiment kits and board games; it is the original German publisher of Catan (Die Siedler von Catan, Klaus Teuber, 1995); it owns the EXIT: The Game escape-room series (co-designed by Inka & Markus Brand; Kennerspiel des Jahres 2017; tens of millions of copies) and a long-running two-player games line (Lost Cities, Targi); its KOSMOS science kits are distributed in North America as Thames & Kosmos. Honest notes: the heritage dates are hedged (1822 Franckh vs early-1900s Kosmos brand); Kosmos publishes Catan in Germany but does not own the Catan IP (Catan GmbH does; the US publisher is Catan Studio/Asmodee); EXIT was co-designed by the Brands (Kosmos is the publisher); current family/ownership status is hedged; and no official brand hex is published, so colours are an unofficial interpretation.
