Lucky Brand Dungarees

Two jeans men in Los Angeles.

Lucky Brand is a Los Angeles denim label founded in 1990 by Gene Montesano and Barry Perlman. English Wikipedia places its founding in Vernon, California, the industrial city just south of downtown Los Angeles, and gives the company’s full name as Lucky Brand Dungarees — the name under which, the Associated Press reported in 2020, it later filed for bankruptcy protection.

Both founders came from the jeans trade. English Wikipedia says that in the 1970s Perlman and Jamal H. Nathan opened a jeans shop in Florida called Four Way Street, and quotes the founders recalling evenings at a local launderette with pockets full of coins and some bleach, washing jeans to sell, each pair, as they put it, “one of a kind.” Montesano moved to Los Angeles in 1978 to work in fashion, Wikipedia says, and with Michael Caruso started Bongo, which he ran for 15 years before rejoining Perlman, a former business partner, in 1990 to launch Lucky Brand.

The company stayed in the Los Angeles area. In 2012, English Wikipedia says, it moved its headquarters from Vernon to the Arts District of downtown Los Angeles, to an office near the 4th and 6th Street bridges over the Los Angeles River. The Associated Press still described it as Los Angeles-based in July 2020.

English Wikipedia says that all of Lucky’s products and the decoration of its stores reflected a bohemian style, and that denim remained the core of the business as the label grew into tops, outerwear and accessories. In 2005, it says, the company added clothing for children from infants to the age of ten, and in 2006 it opened Lucky Brand Jeans Kid stores. The Lucky Brand Foundation, set up in 1996 with an initial focus on children, held fundraising concerts with musicians including Jackson Browne, B.B. King and Bonnie Raitt, Wikipedia says.

Two four-leaf clovers and a motto.

The brand’s signature detail is hidden until the jeans are open. According to English Wikipedia, every pair of Lucky Brand jeans has two four-leaf clovers and the phrase “LUCKY YOU” stitched onto the outside of the fly shield — the strip of fabric behind the zip — and the stitching has become a trademark of the denim line.

Where the jeans are made has changed. English Wikipedia says that before 2010 Lucky products were mainly made in the United States, and that they are now made in countries including Indonesia, China, Peru, Chile, Vietnam, Mexico, Sri Lanka and Haiti. In the summer of 2013, it says, Lucky reintroduced Made in America jeans, using denim from Cone Denim’s White Oak mill in Greensboro, North Carolina, sewn in Los Angeles.

Wikipedia lists a run of collaborations. In October 2022, Wikipedia says, Lucky Brand released a capsule collection with the Paramount Network western drama Yellowstone, with a campaign featuring members of the Compton Cowboys, a Los Angeles equestrian group; the actor Cole Hauser became a brand ambassador in November 2023 and released a collection with the brand in October 2024. In March and July 2023 Lucky released two capsule collections with the British label Laura Ashley, pairing its denim with Laura Ashley’s floral prints. Wikipedia also records a licensed line of David Bowie graphic T-shirts and, in August 2025, a collaboration with Addison Rae built around a low-rise flared jean.

Typography

Design and documentation.

A pair of jeans carries its brand in a handful of small places rather than across one large surface. The stitched shape on a back pocket, the patch sewn above it on the waistband, the buttons and rivets at the stress points and the woven tab or label at a seam are the parts a shopper can recognise from across a room, long before a logo is close enough to read.

Each of those places works differently as identity. Back-pocket stitching is drawn in thread, so it reads as a line and a silhouette rather than as a word. A waistband patch, in leather, card or a printed substitute, is where a name, a symbol and sometimes a picture sit together, much like a small label. Metal hardware is stamped, so it holds lettering in relief at a very small size. Advertising then sets all of this in motion, giving a name a voice, a slogan and a setting.

Each guide in this group looks at those parts in turn — who started the brand, who owns it now, how its marks and advertising have been recorded — and keeps what independent sources document apart from what the company says about itself.

Lucky Brand

Liz Claiborne, Leonard Green, Authentic.

Lucky Brand has had several owners. English Wikipedia says it was bought by Liz Claiborne in 1999; that company later renamed itself Fifth & Pacific, and in December 2013, Wikipedia says, Leonard Green & Partners, the Los Angeles private-equity firm, acquired Lucky Brand from it. Carlos Alberini became chief executive in January 2014 and stepped down in January 2019 to lead Guess, after which an “Office of the CEO” ran the company, according to Wikipedia.

By then Lucky was sold both in its own shops and through department stores; English Wikipedia names Macy’s, Nordstrom, Belk and Dillard’s, and the Associated Press in 2020 named Macy’s, Nordstrom and Costco. In July 2020, the Associated Press reported, Lucky Brand Dungarees filed for Chapter 11 protection in federal bankruptcy court in Delaware, with a proposal to sell the business to buyers led by SPARC Group, the operator of brands owned by Authentic Brands Group and the mall owner Simon Property Group. English Wikipedia says the brand was acquired by Authentic and SPARC; it describes Authentic as the owner of the Lucky Brand intellectual property, in charge of licensing and brand development, and the operating company as the brand’s core licensee, responsible for sourcing, design, wholesale, stores and e-commerce in North America.

That operating company changed again in 2025. In January 2025, FashionUnited reported, JCPenney and SPARC Group combined to form Catalyst Brands, whose shareholders include Simon, Brookfield, Authentic Brands Group and Shein. Catalyst brought together Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Lucky Brand and Nautica with JCPenney, and Natalie Levy continued as brand chief executive of Aéropostale, Lucky Brand and Nautica. So Lucky Brand has been an Authentic Brands Group name since 2020, run day to day by Catalyst Brands since 2025.

For a design guide, Lucky Brand shows how a hidden detail — a motto stitched behind the zip — can work as a signature. Compare Levi’s, whose identity also rests on stitching and small details on the jeans themselves, and Guess, the Los Angeles jeans company Alberini left Lucky to run. For this guide we use clover green, indigo and a saddle tan with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
