Matt plus El: a garage partnership that became a red sun.

Mattel Creations
Picture frames, dollhouse furniture and a name made of two names.
Mattel was founded as Mattel Creations in a garage in Los Angeles in January 1945; English Wikipedia gives the date as 20 January 1945. Its founders were the businessman Harold “Matt” Matson and the married couple Ruth and Elliot Handler. The company’s own history page says simply that it “all began in a garage in 1945”, and describes the three as designers and engineers. An EBSCO Research Starter on the company, written by Jack Lasky in 2023, adds that the Handlers had previously run a giftware and costume-jewellery business before joining forces with Matson.
The name records the partnership. Wikipedia calls it a portmanteau of Matson and Elliot, and the EBSCO entry spells out the pieces: “Matt” from Matson and “El” from Elliot. Ruth’s name does not appear in it, though she took over Matson’s stake when he sold his share to the Handlers; Wikipedia dates that sale to 1946 and attributes it to his poor health, and the EBSCO entry likewise says ill health forced him to step away, leaving the Handlers in charge.
The early products were not toys at all. Wikipedia and the EBSCO entry agree that the business began by making picture frames, and then dollhouse furniture made from the frame offcuts. The EBSCO entry says the company’s early toys included a make-believe makeup set and a birdy bank, and that its breakthrough came in 1947 with the Uke-A-Doodle, a small plastic ukulele; Mattel’s own timeline describes it as a child-sized instrument. Wikipedia says Mattel was incorporated in Hawthorne, California, in 1948, while the company’s timeline describes the 1948 incorporation as being “with headquarters in Los Angeles”.
Television advertising came next. Wikipedia and the EBSCO entry both describe Mattel’s sponsorship of the Mickey Mouse Club, which the company dates to 1955. Then came Barbie. The EBSCO entry says Ruth Handler noticed that her daughter, Barbara, preferred adult paper dolls to baby ones, and that the observation led Ruth to create a teenage fashion doll she called Barbie, unveiled at the 1959 New York Toy Fair. Ken followed in 1961, Midge in 1963 and Skipper in 1964, according to the same entry. Mattel became a publicly traded company in 1960 and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1963.

From Hawthorne to El Segundo, through a string of acquisitions.
The 1960s added new lines alongside Barbie. Wikipedia lists the talking doll Chatty Cathy in 1960, voiced by June Foray, the See ’n Say talking toy in 1965 and the space-themed Major Matt Mason in 1967. On 18 May 1968 Mattel introduced Hot Wheels, which Wikipedia says was created by a team that included a car designer and a rocket scientist; the company’s timeline credits the idea to Elliot Handler. In 1974 an investigation into the company’s financial reporting led to the Handlers leaving the business, and Wikipedia says Arthur S. Spear, then a vice president, took control in 1975. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe figures followed in 1982.
The company has also moved house. Wikipedia says Mattel moved its headquarters from Hawthorne to El Segundo, in Los Angeles County, in 1991; Mattel’s own timeline dates the move into its current El Segundo headquarters to 1990. Production moved overseas over the same decades. Wikipedia records that Mattel opened a factory at the Jababeka Industrial Park in Cikarang, West Java, Indonesia, on 8 October 1992, added a second plant there in 1997, and closed its last factory in the United States in 2002.
Much of today’s portfolio arrived by acquisition. Wikipedia lists International Games, the maker of Uno and Skip-Bo, in 1992; Fisher-Price on 20 August 1993; Tyco Toys, owner of Matchbox, and View-Master in 1997; and in 1998 both Pleasant Company, the creator of American Girl, and the Swindon toymaker Bluebird Toys, which brought Polly Pocket. HIT Entertainment, the owner of Thomas & Friends, followed in a deal Wikipedia dates to 2011 and 2012, and Mega Brands on 28 February 2014. The EBSCO entry singles out the 1993 Fisher-Price purchase among the company’s acquisitions.
In recent years Mattel has built out its media business. Wikipedia says Mattel Films was formed on 6 September 2018, that the 2023 film Barbie was a Mattel Films release, and that on 2 June 2025 Mattel combined Mattel Films and Mattel Television into a single division, Mattel Studios. Mattel’s shares moved from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq on 13 September 2009, Wikipedia records.

Design and documentation.
A toy company’s name usually reaches people indirectly. Children meet the characters, the dolls and the games first, and the maker’s mark sits in a corner of the box, on the base of a figure or on the back of the instructions. For many toy makers the corporate logo works more like a signature than a headline, a small, repeatable sign that has to sit beside a crowd of louder product names without competing with them.
The places where that mark does its main work are mostly trade settings: the cover of a dealer catalogue, the spine of a retail display, the stand or showroom at a toy fair where buyers see a season’s range before it reaches shops. A company that changes owners, merges with a rival or licenses its name may carry several versions of its mark across those settings at once, and older boxes keep earlier versions in circulation long after a redesign.
Each guide follows the company rather than any single toy: who founded it and where, who has owned it since, how its name and mark have changed, and which lines it is remembered for, with the company’s own account marked as its own.

Mattel
From “Mattel Creations” to one word and a red sun.
Mattel’s corporate identity settled in 1969. Wikipedia says that year the company dropped its “Mattel Creations” and “Mattel, Inc.: Toymakers” branding in favour of simply “Mattel”, and launched what it calls the “red sun” logo. The change turned a name built from two founders’ names into a single word set inside a single shape, and it arrived as the company’s range was widening well beyond dolls, into die-cast cars, talking toys and space-themed figures.
The corporate mark sits above a portfolio of separately branded lines, many of which came from other companies. Fisher-Price, bought in 1993, Matchbox, which came with Tyco in 1997, and American Girl and Polly Pocket, both acquired in 1998, continue as named brands within the group. The company has also used anniversaries to revisit its own story: its history page says Mattel marked an anniversary in 2025 with a commemorative Ruby Red line of toys and a philanthropic programme.
Mattel’s own timeline tells the company story largely through product lines. It lists the cardboard-and-paper Barbie Dreamhouse in 1962, the doll Christie in 1968, Malibu Barbie in 1971 and, the same year, Uno, which the company says was created by Merle Robbins, a barbershop owner from Reading, Ohio, who wrote each card’s action on the card itself. The timeline also dates Mattel’s sponsorship of Mickey Mouse Club advertising to 1955 and the arrival of View-Master to 1997.
For a design guide, Mattel shows how a company named after two of its founders can compress that origin into a single word and a simple emblem, then let a long list of independently named toys sit beneath it. Compare it with Fisher-Price, the East Aurora toymaker it has owned since 1993, and Polly Pocket, the compact toy that came with Bluebird Toys in 1998. For this guide we use sun red, track orange and frame cream with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
