A poster business, a grass-haired stocking and a foam plane.

Spin Master is a toy and entertainment company based in Toronto, founded in 1994 by three friends: Ronnen Harary, Anton Rabie and Ben Varadi. An Associated Press report carried by the Los Angeles Times on 24 March 1999 described the founders as three entrepreneurial friends, with Varadi handling product development and Rabie as the salesman of the group, and said the company was started with savings that Rabie and Harary had built up from a poster business they ran in college. English Wikipedia says the three met through the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario, and it lists Spin Master Toys as the company’s name from 1994 to 2001; it now trades as Spin Master Corp.

The business did not begin with a toy of its own. The AP report says the company’s early hit came after it bought the North American distribution rights to the Earth Buddy, a stocking filled with sawdust and given a face, which grew grass for hair once watered. Next came Devil Sticks, a three-rod juggling game. In 1996, the report says, the partners shifted their focus entirely to toys and went looking for products at the annual toy fair held in New York every February.

That search led to Air Hogs. At the fair, the AP says, the partners met the British toy inventors John Dixon and Peter Manning, who were looking for a company to take on an air-powered plane that larger firms had already passed over. Spin Master rebuilt the plane, gave it a new design and spent more than two years developing it. “We had no clue what we were in for when we started the development,” Rabie told the AP. English Wikipedia dates the launch of the Air Hogs brand to 1998, with a foam plane called the Sky Shark that flew on compressed air.

In 2008, Wikipedia says, Spin Master launched Bakugan Battle Brawlers, developed with the Japanese company Sega Toys: a game of plastic balls that spring open to reveal anime-style creatures, supported by an animated television series made with TMS Entertainment, Nelvana and other partners. The same launch marked the debut of Spin Master Entertainment, a division set up to take the company’s properties into television and film. In 2010, Wikipedia says, the company began developing PAW Patrol, creating the toy line and the television show at the same time.

A public listing and a run of heritage brands.

Spin Master is a public company. CBC News, reporting on 27 October 2020, said the company founded by three friends in 1994 went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange and then began acquiring other toy brands. Wikipedia dates the initial public offering to 2015, a month after Spin Master agreed to buy Cardinal Industries, a games and puzzles company, and the shares trade under the ticker TOY. The founders remain involved: a company announcement in June 2025 described Anton Rabie as Chair and Co-Founder.

The acquisitions gave the young company some of the older names in the toy business. On 13 August 2013 The Globe and Mail reported that Spin Master had acquired the Meccano construction-set line, sold in the United States as the Erector Set. Rabie, then co-chief executive, told the paper that the brand had not undergone a lot of dramatic innovation over decades, and said the company planned to move to the Meccano name in the United States (see our Meccano guide). In February 2016 the Ohio Art Company sold Etch A Sketch and Doodle Sketch to Spin Master; CBC News reported the sale on 12 February 2016 and quoted Rabie, by then chief executive, saying the toys had been popular for more than 50 years.

More followed quickly. English Wikipedia records the purchase of the board-game library of the Italian publisher Editrice Giochi in January 2016; the digital toy makers Toca Boca and Sago Mini from Sweden’s Bonnier Group in April 2016; the pool and outdoor company Swimways in August 2016; Aerobie flying discs and the Perplexus maze ball in 2017; and the plush maker Gund in March 2018. In 2019, Wikipedia says, the company added the Orbeez water beads and was named master toy partner for DreamWorks’ Gabby’s Dollhouse, and from spring 2020 it held the DC Entertainment toy licence.

Two larger deals came in the 2020s. CBC News reported on 27 October 2020 that Spin Master would buy Rubik’s Cube, the puzzle the Hungarian inventor Ernő Rubik created in 1974; Wikipedia dates completion to 5 January 2021. Spin Master announced an agreement to buy Melissa & Doug in October 2023, and The Toy Book reported on 2 January 2024 that the acquisition was complete, describing Melissa & Doug as a company focused on early childhood play through wooden toys.

Leadership has passed beyond the founders in the chief executive’s office. Wikipedia, citing a company release of December 2020, says Max Rangel became Global President in January 2021 and chief executive that April. In a release dated 23 June 2025, the company announced that Christina Miller, a member of its board for five years, would become chief executive on 7 July 2025 as Rangel stepped down.

Design and documentation.

A toy company’s name usually reaches people indirectly. Children meet the characters, the dolls and the games first, and the maker’s mark sits in a corner of the box, on the base of a figure or on the back of the instructions. For many toy makers the corporate logo works more like a signature than a headline, a small, repeatable sign that has to sit beside a crowd of louder product names without competing with them.

The places where that mark does its main work are mostly trade settings: the cover of a dealer catalogue, the spine of a retail display, the stand or showroom at a toy fair where buyers see a season’s range before it reaches shops. A company that changes owners, merges with a rival or licenses its name may carry several versions of its mark across those settings at once, and older boxes keep earlier versions in circulation long after a redesign.

Each guide follows the company rather than any single toy: who founded it and where, who has owned it since, how its name and mark have changed, and which lines it is remembered for, with the company’s own account marked as its own.

Spin Master

One corporate name over many brands.

Spin Master’s identity works on two levels. The corporate name sits over a portfolio of product brands that each carry their own names and characters — Air Hogs, Bakugan, PAW Patrol and Hatchimals among them — while acquired brands such as Etch A Sketch, Gund and Rubik’s Cube continue under their established names. English Wikipedia dates the current Spin Master corporate logo to 2012. The company name itself recurs across its divisions, which Wikipedia lists as Spin Master Games, Spin Master Entertainment, Spin Master Digital Games and Spin Master Studios, alongside the US operating company.

Much of the brand’s public face is now on screen. Wikipedia says the animated preschool series Abby Hatcher debuted on Nickelodeon in the United States on 1 January 2019, and that Mighty Express, about a team of trains and their young friends, launched on Netflix in 2020. In 2015, Wikipedia says, the company and Mondo Media launched SpindoTV, a YouTube channel of animated and live-action series, some of them tied to Spin Master toy lines. PAW Patrol: The Movie, a Spin Master Entertainment production made with Nickelodeon Movies and distributed by Paramount Pictures, opened in cinemas on 20 August 2021, and a sequel, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, followed in 2023, Wikipedia says.

Outside partners recur through the company’s history. The Earth Buddy came through a distribution deal, Air Hogs began as a prototype by two British inventors, and Bakugan was developed with Sega Toys. In the AP’s 1999 account, Spin Master rebuilt the inventors’ plane and gave it a new design before launch; in The Globe and Mail’s 2013 report, Rabie described plans to triple Meccano’s marketing budget the following year, to work with licensing partners and to attract younger children to the construction sets, while keeping the brand’s appeal to serious builders.

For a design guide, Spin Master shows how a corporate name can stay in the background while a portfolio of characters, construction sets and puzzles carries its own identities, and how acquired brands can be kept recognisable under a new owner. Compare it with Meccano, the Liverpool construction set it has owned since 2013, and Etch A Sketch, the drawing toy it bought from the Ohio Art Company in 2016.
