Barbershop first

Murdock London grew from a barbershop.

Murdock London is a lesson in a barbershop that became a brand. It was founded in 2006 in London by Brendan Murdock, opening its first traditional barbershop in Shoreditch — and only later growing into a men’s grooming products house (its cologne and shave range launched around 2010). The barbershop came first, and it remains central: precision haircuts, traditional cut-throat wet shaves and beard sculpting across shops in Shoreditch, Covent Garden, Liberty of London and beyond.

Its positioning is modern British barbershop heritage-meets-modern, with an explicitly British-made grooming and fragrance line spanning hair, beard, shave, skincare and cologne. Its fragrances — Black Tea, Patchouli, Avalon, Vetiver, Soho Leather and Napier — are a signature, alongside beard oils, shave products and styling.

The identity is design-led and premium, built on refined serif type, cream and dark sophisticated tones, and elegant product photography. (Honest notes: the public founding date is 2006 (a 2005 date in some registries is likely the legal incorporation), and its products came later (~2010), not from day one; its fragrance line is Avalon, Black Tea, Patchouli, Vetiver, Soho Leather, Napier (not some names occasionally misquoted); its identity reads as cream and charcoal with refined serif type rather than a documented “racing green” signature; it is no longer strictly founder-owned — Murdock Limited was acquired by The Grooming Company (backed by CedarBridge Capital) in 2018; and no official brand hex is published.)

Colour

Murdock London lives in a cream-and-charcoal palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Murdock London’s identity is premium, British and sophisticated — a warm cream, a deep charcoal, a heritage green, a muted brass, and a soft stone grey. The palette reads like a refined modern barbershop: cream and dark tones, a heritage-green accent, and brass warmth, elegant rather than loud. It signals design-led British grooming that bridges barbershop tradition and modern polish. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a cream-and-charcoal palette signals premium British grooming. Murdock London’s world reads as sophisticated and refined. For designers, it is a reminder that warm cream with deep charcoal, lifted by a heritage green and brass, conveys premium barbershop polish, matching a brand that bridges tradition and modernity. The takeaways: use cream and charcoal for premium British calm; add a heritage-green or brass accent; and treat any single hex as unofficial when there is no published spec.

Typography

The wordmark spirit is a refined serif — premium and British.

Murdock London’s identity carries a refined, premium, British spirit — a “Murdock London” wordmark whose elegant serif forms match a design-led barbershop house. A refined display serif captures the mood: it is sophisticated and considered, the register of premium British grooming rather than a rugged or budget brand. Set against a cream-and-charcoal palette, the refined serif feels elegant and modern-heritage — exactly the barbershop-first, British-made personality Murdock carries. It is refined rather than loud, mirroring a considered, premium product range. (Murdock London’s real wordmark is a trademark we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not something we assert.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a refined serif spirit,” not the Murdock London logo. The type behaves like the brand: refined, premium and British.

Experience-led as the difference

Murdock London stands for the barbershop.

Murdock London is a lesson in letting an experience build a brand. Because it began as a barbershop — a real place where men get expert cuts and wet shaves — its grooming products arrived with built-in credibility and a physical home. That experience-first model gives Murdock something a products-only brand lacks: shops that embody the brand, staff who use the products, and a premium British identity rooted in a genuine service. The barbershop is the proof, and the products extend it.

For designers and brand-builders, Murdock London offers a clear takeaway: a real service experience can anchor a products brand. The lessons: build (or keep) a physical experience that embodies the brand; let products extend that experience rather than replace it; and keep the identity premium and consistent. It is also a reminder to keep the facts honest: Murdock London was founded in 2006 in Shoreditch by Brendan Murdock as a barbershop first, makes British grooming products, and has been owned by The Grooming Company since 2018 — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Murdock London led with the barbershop — proof that an experience can be the difference.
