Notem Brand Guidelines
The Scandinavian notebook.

Two constants: a muted-tonal palette and a minimal sans register. Abstract homage — not the Notem notebooks or packaging.
The Scandinavian notebook
Notem keeps the notebook calm and considered.
Notem is a lesson in Scandinavian restraint. Founded in 2017 in Copenhagen by Signe Birkving Bertelsen, it makes minimalist notebooks and planners rooted, in its own words, in a Scandinavian tradition of space and light.
Its identity is the Scandinavian notebook. Notem makes notebooks, planners, notepads, calendars, pens and desk accessories in muted, tonal colourways with clean embossed softcovers and quality paper, naming its lines with short, given-name-style words — Bea, Uma, Even, Alva. Minimal, but with a quiet, playful sense of colour. Everyday objects, made calm. Function, softened by good taste.
(Honest notes: Notem was founded in 2017 in Copenhagen by Signe Birkving Bertelsen; some interviews use “co-founded,” but no second founder is named, so we credit her as founder and don’t invent one. Its lines are renamed seasonally, so we cite the given-name-style naming (Bea, Uma, Even, Alva) rather than fixing one hero product, and we don’t assert unverified names. On production, it is designed in Denmark and, per the founder, manufactured across Europe on Scandinavian paper — so we say designed in Denmark, made in Europe, not “made in Denmark.” Its independence is presumed rather than documented, so we keep that soft. There’s no official brand hex, and we reproduce no logo or design — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
Notem lives in a muted-tonal palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Notem’s identity is muted, tonal and Scandinavian — a dusty blue, an ink, a clay, a sage, and a chalk. The palette pairs a dusty blue with a clay — the register of Scandinavian minimalism. It signals calm and quality rather than novelty. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a dusty blue with a clay signals a minimalist notebook studio. Notem’s world is a calm, tonal object. For designers, it is a reminder that a restrained, tonal palette and clean detailing can be a whole identity, and that “quiet” is a deliberate design choice, not an absence of one. Because a mid dusty blue can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: work in tonal ranges; keep it clean; let colour be quiet; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a minimal sans — calm, tonal, Scandinavian.
Notem’s identity carries a calm, tonal, Scandinavian spirit — a considered, minimal object. A clean, soft sans captures the mood: it is quiet and modern, the register of a Copenhagen studio. Set in a muted-tonal palette, the minimal sans feels calm and tonal — exactly the personality Notem carries. It is understated rather than loud, mirroring an embossed softcover. (Notem’s real notebooks and wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a minimal sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: calm, tonal and Scandinavian.

Scandinavian restraint
Notem stands for the Scandinavian notebook.
Notem is a lesson in making restraint the identity. A muted-tonal palette, a minimal sans and a calm notebook make Scandinavian minimalism the whole brand — muted, tonal, Scandinavian. The restraint is the differentiator. The differentiator is a tonal, considered calm applied to everyday paper objects.
Put to work, the identity is a tonal system. A designer building in this spirit would choose a narrow band of muted, related colours, keep detailing clean and embossed rather than printed-loud, and let the object feel like part of a calm set. The lesson Notem teaches is that quiet is a position: in a category full of bright covers and busy grids, a restrained tonal palette stands out precisely by not shouting, and consistency across a renamed, seasonal range holds the brand together even as individual products come and go. The naming is part of that glue: giving each line a short, human, given-name-style word makes a rotating range feel like a family rather than a catalogue of SKUs, and lets the palette and finish carry the recognition instead of a logo. It is a quiet lesson in system design — when the tone is consistent enough, the individual products become interchangeable without the brand ever feeling inconsistent.
For designers and brand-builders, Notem offers a clear takeaway: make quiet a choice. The lessons: work in tonal ranges; keep it clean; let colour be quiet; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it was founded in 2017 in Copenhagen by Signe Birkving Bertelsen, and it is designed in Denmark and made in Europe — the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Notem made restraint the brand — proof that calm can be the difference.
