A whisky for the neglected brands

Born inside one company, carried out of two more.

Officer’s Choice, often shortened to OC, is an Indian whisky owned by Allied Blenders & Distillers (ABD), a company headquartered in Mumbai. Its story begins in 1988 inside a different company. Business Today reported in December 2012 that Kishore Chhabria, then managing director of Shaw Wallace, the Kolkata liquor maker, felt the company was giving all its attention to its frontline brands, and set up a separate division in Delhi for the neglected ones. Officer’s Choice was created to give that division a whisky of its own.

The brand then travelled with its creator. According to Business Today, Chhabria left Shaw Wallace and formed a company called BDA, taking Officer’s Choice with him; the name BDA came from Bishambhar Das Agarwal, who had set up the original entity. BDA later became a subsidiary of Herbertsons, the liquor company controlled by Vijay Mallya, in return for a stake and the vice-chairmanship for Chhabria. When that partnership broke down, Chhabria left Herbertsons with BDA and its single big brand, and BDA was restructured and renamed Allied Blenders & Distillers.

That journey left a long argument behind it. Mallya bought Shaw Wallace in 2005 and revived the dispute over the ownership of Officer’s Choice, and the two sides settled it out of court in October 2012, Business Standard and Business Today reported.

ABD stayed in the Chhabria family’s hands and grew around its first brand. English Wikipedia names Kishore Chhabria as founder and chairman and lists brands including Sterling Reserve whiskies, Kyron brandy, launched in 2013, and Jolly Roger rum, added in 2010. The company went public in 2024: after a share offer that ran from 25 to 27 June, ABD’s shares began trading on the National Stock Exchange of India and BSE on 2 July 2024, Business Standard reported.

The identity was an advertising idea from the start. Business Today reported in 2012 that the agency Rediffusion DY&R, then headed by Arun Nanda, coined the name Officer’s Choice and designed the packaging, including naval officer stripes. Nanda told the magazine the aim was to give a feel of high status to a product sold at a modest price.

The name also shortens to the two letters OC, by which the whisky is widely known, English Wikipedia notes. English Wikipedia also says that the brand historically aimed at daily-wage earners, and that ABD later stretched the name upward with premium editions to reach new buyers.

The first of those was Officer’s Choice Blue, which ABD launched in 2011 as its entry into the deluxe whisky segment, Best Media Info reported in August 2011; NDTV Food reported its arrival in Delhi in 2012. Officer’s Choice Black followed, a blend of Indian grain spirits and Scotch malts aged in charred oak barrels, Business Standard reported in 2014. The name has also been stretched beyond whisky, with an Officer’s Choice rum and brandy in ABD’s range, English Wikipedia says.

The Blue edition was given a new look in 2026. On 1 September 2026 ABD announced a refreshed premium identity for Officer’s Choice Blue in a release filed with the National Stock Exchange of India, backed by a campaign called “Badal Ke Toh Dekho” and rolling out first in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Reports of the launch described a sleeker bottle, a transparent label, matte-gold foiling and an embossed “Trusted Since 1988” marker, a date that ties the new pack back to the brand’s beginning.

The seven brands in this group are all Indian and Japanese spirits names: Old Monk, McDowell’s, Royal Stag, Officer’s Choice, Blenders Pride, Hibiki and Nikka. Spirits brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from houses that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger drinks groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a hotel bar.

A spirits brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle than by a label, a name and the story it tells, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its whisky or rum is actually distilled, blended and bottled.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its spirits are made and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Officer’s Choice

From a neglected division to one of the world’s biggest spirit brands.

The whisky made for a sidelined division became one of the largest spirit brands anywhere by volume. Business Today wrote in 2012 that Officer’s Choice had become the world’s largest-selling whisky in 2011, ahead of Johnnie Walker; English Wikipedia dates that milestone to 2013, so the sources differ on the year. English Wikipedia also says the brand sold about 28 million cases in 2014 and overtook Smirnoff vodka as the world’s best-selling spirit brand by volume, citing The Spirits Business and The Economic Times.

Making that volume takes a wide network. English Wikipedia, describing ABD in 2023, counts nine company-owned bottling units, one distillery and 22 manufacturing units owned by others, with sales across 30 Indian states and union territories. The rivals are other large Indian whiskies: English Wikipedia ranks McDowell’s No.1 and Royal Stag beside Officer’s Choice at the top of the Indian market from 2011, and Business Standard reported in May 2014 that ABD was readying Officer’s Choice Black to take on Royal Stag.

The family behind the brand has kept the founding date in view. ABD’s 2026 Blue packaging carries the 1988 date on the bottle, and English Wikipedia names Kishore Chhabria as chairman of the listed company. The company’s own site is abdindia.com.

For a design guide, Officer’s Choice shows how a borrowed uniform, a two-letter nickname and a founding year can carry a mass-market whisky from a neglected corner of one company to a stock-market listing of its own. Compare Royal Stag, its long-time rival from Pernod Ricard India, and McDowell’s, the whisky that came out of Mallya’s side of the trade. For this guide we use officer navy, stripe gold and parade white with a condensed sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
