Manila, 1958.

SM Investments is a holding company whose name began as a shop sign. Wikipedia describes SM Investments Corporation, also known as the SM Group, as a Filipino conglomerate with interests in shopping malls, retail, property development, banking and tourism, headquartered in the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay, on the Manila Bay shore. The two letters at the front of its name go back to a single shoe store.

The founder was Henry Sy. Rappler, in a profile of the group published on 28 June 2017, said Sy followed his father to the Philippines from China as a boy, and that his father kept a sari-sari store, a neighbourhood shop, on Echague Street in Manila’s Quiapo district. During the Second World War the family’s stores were burned, the profile said, and Sy’s father went back to China while Sy looked for other ventures.

He found one in footwear. Rappler reported that Sy sold surplus GI boots and, in 1958, opened a shoe store on Carriedo in Manila. The same outlet repeated the point in its report of 19 January 2019, the day of Sy’s death: he opened ShoeMart in 1958 along Carriedo. The 2017 profile spelled the name as two words, Shoe Mart, and said that when local stock ran short Sy looked overseas for shoes in broken sizes, mainly for Filipino women.

The shop’s name supplied the group’s initials. Shoe and Mart became S and M, and the abbreviation outlived the product it described. Wikipedia gives the founding date of the business as 6 February 1958, citing the company’s own history page as archived in 2016.

From a shoe shop to a house name.

The letters stayed when the stock changed. Rappler’s 2017 profile said Sy branched out into other goods, such as children’s wear, and that in 1972 he transformed Shoe Mart into SM Department Store. Wikipedia’s article on Henry Sy dates the opening of SM Quiapo, described there as SM’s standalone department store, to November 1972, and says Sy entrusted his daughter Teresita Sy-Coson with running it. From that point SM was no longer an abbreviation anyone needed to spell out. It was the name of the store.

The same two letters then went onto buildings. Wikipedia lists SM City North EDSA in Quezon City as the opening mall of the SM Supermalls line and dates it to 8 November 1985; Rappler’s 2017 profile placed the mall’s opening in 1983. The mall carried the store’s initials, and later malls followed the same pattern of SM plus a place name: SM City, SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia. Wikipedia says the malls are operated by SM Prime Holdings, a listed subsidiary.

Not every business in the group took the initials. Banking arrived through a renamed savings bank. Rappler reported in 2017 that Sy bought Acme Savings Bank in 1967 and renamed it Banco de Oro, which trades today as BDO Unibank. Its branches use the BDO name, not SM. The group also holds a stake in China Banking Corporation, according to the same profile. So the SM letters work as a house name for stores, malls, cinemas and homes, while the bank keeps a separate identity of its own.

The parent name itself is plain. Wikipedia describes SM Investments Corporation as the holding company above SM Prime, SM Retail and BDO, and records that Jose Sio was named its chairman in April 2017, citing the Philippine Daily Inquirer; Rappler’s profile from June that year also identified Sio as chairman. Henry Sy died on 19 January 2019, Rappler reported that day.

Family names, house flags and malls.

Across Asia, many business groups carry a single family name or a short set of initials over a wide spread of trades. The same word can sit above a department store, a bank branch, a mobile network, a housing estate and a shipping office, and the identity work is less about one product than about holding that name steady across very different places. A house flag or monogram, often older than any of the companies now beneath it, tends to do the heavy lifting: it turns up on ship funnels, annual-report covers, office lobbies and staff lanyards long after the original trading business has changed shape.

Property is where these identities become physical. A group’s name or mark placed on a tower, mall or estate turns architecture into signage, and renaming a building or a chain of malls is a brand decision made in full public view. Designers studying these names usually look at three things: how the parent mark sits beside the marks of the businesses it owns, whether a founder’s name or initials survive a rebrand, and how a colour or letterform stays recognisable at the scale of a skyline as well as on a receipt.

SM Investments

Henry Sans and Electric Blue.

The SM mark was redrawn in 2022. A Manila Bulletin column published on 4 September 2022 said the design studio Pentagram was SM’s partner on the brand refresh, that the process took several months, and that the new brand was rolled out earlier that year. The column described two named elements. The letters SM are set in a bespoke typeface called Henry Sans, named after the founder, Henry Sy Sr. The unifying colour is one SM calls SM Electric Blue.

The same column said the new letters move away from lines and sharp edges towards soft curves, and that the refresh was meant to make the brand more recognisable in the digital space. It quoted Cathy S. Ileto, vice president for corporate communications at SM Retail, who spoke about the refresh at a National Retail Association conference and linked the present SM with the Shoemart where it began.

The refresh is a useful case for anyone working on a group identity in which a parent and its businesses share a name. The SM letters do several jobs at once. They are the initials of a 1958 shoe shop, the name of a department store, the opening word in the names of malls and the short form of a listed holding company. A redraw of two letters changes the look of all of those surfaces together, from a shopping bag to a mall facade on a highway. A named typeface and a named colour give that one change a vocabulary that designers, sign makers and app developers can share.

The building is the other surface. Wikipedia places the holding company’s head office in One E-Com Center on Harbor Drive, inside the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay, a district that also holds SM Mall of Asia, the SMX Convention Center and the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Each of those names begins with the same two letters, so the address itself repeats the brand.

For a design guide, SM Investments shows how the initials of a single shop can grow into a house name for stores and malls, while a bank inside the group keeps a name of its own. Compare Ayala, another Philippine group whose name sits over property and malls, and DBS Bank, an Asian bank whose identity is built from initials. For this guide we use electric, harbour and night blues with a rounded sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
