Special K Brand Guidelines
A 1955 Battle Creek cereal whose name now belongs to two owners, depending on the map.

Two constants: a letter red, deep berry and blush palette and a soft serif register. Abstract homage — not a Special K product or mark; no pack, logo or letterform is reproduced.
A Kellogg’s cereal from 1955
One letter, one company, until 2023.
Special K is a breakfast cereal that began life inside the Kellogg Company of Battle Creek, Michigan. English Wikipedia, citing the Kellogg newsroom, says the cereal was introduced to the United States in 1955, and describes it as made mainly from grains such as lightly toasted rice, wheat and barley. Its infobox lists the Kellogg Company as the brand’s owner from 1955 until 2023. The company behind it had its own long history in Battle Creek: a 1906 corn flakes package shown on Wikipedia’s WK Kellogg Co page is captioned as the work of the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Co., which, the caption says, became the Kellogg Food Company in 1908.
For decades Special K was one cereal sold under one company’s name in many countries, but not always to one recipe. Wikipedia says that until mid-2014 Kellogg used a Special K formula in Canada that differed from the one used in the United States and was closer to the original 1955 product. With the closure of Kellogg’s plant in London, Ontario, in June 2014, Wikipedia says, Canadians began eating Special K made in the US.
The name also stretched beyond the bowl. Wikipedia records that Kellogg launched Special K2O Protein Water in September 2006, relaunched it with new graphics and a Mixed Berry flavour on 15 August 2007, and later discontinued it, along with a run of crackers, popcorn and shakes sold under the Special K name. The brand today is presented on specialk.com, and Wikipedia’s infobox lists two owners for it — the result of a corporate split, not a sale of the brand on its own.

WK Kellogg Co, Kellanova, Ferrero, Mars.
The split began as a plan. Wikipedia says the Kellogg Company announced on 21 June 2022 that it would separate its businesses, and that on 15 March 2023 it named the two resulting companies: the North American cereal business would be WK Kellogg Co, named after Will Keith Kellogg, and the rest — snacks and international cereal — would be Kellanova. CNN reported the names on 15 March 2023. The separation was completed on 2 October 2023, the day Reuters reported on the two companies’ debut on the stock market. Kellanova, the former Kellogg Company, was the surviving company and kept the ticker “K”; WK Kellogg Co listed as “KLG”, with its headquarters in Battle Creek, while Kellanova was based in Chicago.
For Special K, the split drew a line on the map. Wikipedia says that since 2023 the cereal has been made by WK Kellogg Co for the United States, Canada and the Caribbean, while Kellanova makes the cereal for the rest of the world and the Special K meal bars for all markets. Both companies kept using the Kellogg’s name. In August 2024, Wikipedia says, WK Kellogg Co announced that it would close a plant in Omaha, Nebraska, at the end of 2026 and reduce production in Memphis, Tennessee, while plants in Battle Creek, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Belleville, Ontario, would make more.
Both halves were then sold. Reuters, the BBC and The New York Times reported on 10 July 2025 that WK Kellogg Co had agreed to be acquired by the Italian confectioner Ferrero, the group behind Ferrero Rocher. Wikipedia, citing The Globe and Mail and CSP Daily News, says shareholders approved the deal on 19 September 2025 and that it closed on 26 September 2025. Ferrero has owned WK Kellogg Co, and with it Special K cereal in North America and the Caribbean, since September 2025. In February 2026, Food Business News reported, Ferrero chose Jean-Baptiste Santoul to lead WK Kellogg Co.
Kellanova went to Mars, the owner of Snickers and M&M’s. Wikipedia says Mars agreed to buy Kellanova on 14 August 2024; Bloomberg reported on 8 December 2025 that the European Commission had cleared the deal, and the acquisition was completed on 11 December 2025, after which Kellanova left the New York Stock Exchange and its chief executive, Steve Cahillane, stepped down. Mars has owned Kellanova, and with it Special K cereal outside North America and the Caribbean and Special K bars everywhere, since December 2025. Wikipedia names Trafford Park in Greater Manchester as Kellanova’s UK headquarters and a factory site, and Dublin as its European headquarters.

The brands in this group are all breakfast cereals that sit inside much larger food companies. A cereal of this kind usually carries two names at once: the master brand of the company that makes it, and the name of the cereal itself, often with a character, a slogan or a box colour of its own. On a single shelf, the two can work together or pull in different directions.
Ownership adds another layer. A food group can split, sell or merge, and the same cereal name can end up with different owners in different parts of the world, so the company behind a box in one country is not always the company behind it in another. A cereal can also outlast several parents while keeping its name, its pieces and its advertising lines.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — when the cereal appeared, who has owned it and where, how its advertising and characters developed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.
Kk
A soft serif — the register of a single initial on a cereal box. (Specimen set in Fraunces, a serif STAND-IN; NOT the Special K logo.)
One letter, two owners
A name that kept its shape through a split.
What keeps Special K recognisable is its name: a single letter after a single word, carried on boxes and bars under the Kellogg’s name in every market. The 2023 separation did not create two brands. Wikipedia’s articles on the cereal, on WK Kellogg Co and on Kellanova all describe the same Special K name being made by two companies for different territories, with both still trading as Kellogg’s. For a shopper in Toronto or Kingston, Jamaica, the box comes from a Battle Creek company now owned by Ferrero; for a shopper in Manchester or Melbourne, it comes from a Chicago company now owned by Mars.
The range has also differed by country. Wikipedia lists flavours such as Red Berries and Vanilla Almond in the United States and a separate set of varieties in the UK and Ireland, and notes that Special K bars are made by Kellanova for every market. The brand has also been a sister to Rice Krispies, another Kellogg’s rice cereal whose ownership was divided along the same line in 2023.
For a design guide, Special K shows how a short name built around one letter can travel across a corporate split without changing its face, even as the factories, owners and recipes behind it differ by region. Compare it with Kellogg’s, the parent name both companies still use, and Frosted Flakes, another WK Kellogg Co cereal in North America. For this guide we use letter red and deep berry on blush with a soft serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
