Two constants: a bright retro-outdoor palette and a quirky, characterful grotesque. Abstract homage — not the Topo Designs wordmark.

Outside how you decide

Topo Designs made outdoor colourful.

Topo Designs is a lesson in retro-outdoor design for the city and the trail. It was founded in 2008 in Fort Collins, Colorado by Jedd Rose and Mark Hansen. (An honest correction: the founders are Jedd Rose and Mark Hansen — not “brothers Jedd and Mark Hannah”; they’re not brothers and the surnames differ.) The origin is charming and literal: in 2008, Jedd bought a sewing machine and began sewing packs in his Fort Collins basement, while Mark sourced materials and connected with Colorado manufacturers. (Two honest notes: no official brand hex is published, and the wordmark typeface is undocumented.)

Topo’s aesthetic is retro, heritage-outdoor — bright, often two-tone 1970s-inspired colourways (think goldenrod, forest, clay), a stylized triangle/mountain mark, and colourful webbing. The positioning is dual: gear that works as well heading into a meeting or across campus as it does up a trail. The brand’s trademarked line is “Outside how you decide.™,” and it describes its range as “for Anywhere on Your Map.” (An honest note: “made for the city as much as the mountains” is a fair paraphrase of the positioning, not a verified official slogan.)

Signature products include the Rover Pack (the classic ~20L drawstring daypack with the front pocket), the Global Travel Bag (a carry-on-friendly one-bag option), and the Klettersack (a 25L updated classic — “Klettersack” is German for “climbing sack”). Manufacturing is a genuine heritage-to-scale arc: the originals were hand-sewn in Colorado, and current mainline bags are made in Vietnam in Fair Trade Certified / Fair Wear factories using recycled nylons, with a limited Colorado-made heritage capsule. Topo also runs a MAP Guarantee™ repair program. Outside how you decide.

Colour

Topo Designs lives in bright retro-outdoor colour. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Topo Designs’ identity is its bright, retro-outdoor palette — goldenrods and mustards, forest and pine greens, clay and rust reds, periwinkles and creams, mixed in cheerful two-tone colourways. Drawing on 1970s outdoor aesthetics, the colour is joyful and characterful — the opposite of muted technical gear — and it’s central to why the bags read as both fun and heritage. The two-tone colour-blocking makes each piece feel expressive and distinct. The honest caveat: Topo publishes no official brand hex, so the goldenrod, forest and clay here are an original, unofficial interpretation of its named colourways, not first-party values.

The lesson is retro colour can make outdoor gear joyful. Topo’s goldenrod-and-forest world reads as fun, heritage and expressive. For designers, it’s a reminder that bright, nostalgic colour-blocking can differentiate outdoor products from muted norms. The takeaways: use bright, retro two-tone colour for characterful gear; draw on a clear era (1970s outdoor); and treat specific hexes as unofficial when the palette is colourway-based.

Typography

The wordmark is a quirky grotesque — characterful and retro.

Topo Designs’ identity carries a quirky, characterful, retro spirit — a “Topo Designs” wordmark paired with the triangle/mountain mark, whose friendly, distinctive letterforms read as fun, heritage-outdoor and approachable. The characterful type matches a brand built on bright retro colour and dual city-and-trail positioning, and it keeps the personality playful rather than austere. Set against a bright retro-outdoor palette, the type feels characterful and warm — exactly the joyful, “outside how you decide” personality Topo cultivates. It’s quirky and retro rather than clinical, mirroring the colourful bags. Because the exact wordmark face isn’t publicly documented, the honest description is “a quirky grotesque spirit,” not a named font. The type behaves like the brand: quirky, characterful and retro.

Retro-outdoor as the difference

Topo Designs bridged city and trail.

Topo Designs is a lesson in a distinct aesthetic bridging two worlds. Topo carved out a clear position between technical outdoor gear and urban lifestyle bags by owning a specific look: bright, 1970s-inspired retro-outdoor colour, characterful two-tone colourways, and a triangle-mountain mark — gear that looks as right on a city commute as on a trail. That coherent, joyful aesthetic is the whole differentiator: in a market split between muted performance packs and plain urban bags, Topo’s colourful heritage style stands out and signals a lifestyle rather than just a function. Backed by a genuine origin story (a founder sewing packs in a Colorado basement), real Colorado-made heritage, and current Fair Trade / Fair Wear production with recycled materials, the brand reads as authentic and values-driven, not just stylish. The lesson is that a distinct, coherent aesthetic — consistently applied — can bridge categories and become the brand itself. Own a look that works in two worlds, and you own the space between them.

For designers and brand-builders, Topo Designs offers a clear takeaway: a distinct, coherent aesthetic can bridge categories and define a brand. The lessons: own a specific look (bright retro-outdoor colour, two-tone colourways, the triangle mark); position it between worlds (city and trail); and back it with genuine origin and values (Colorado heritage, Fair Trade / Fair Wear, recycled materials). It’s also a reminder to keep the facts precise — Topo Designs was founded in 2008 in Fort Collins by Jedd Rose and Mark Hansen, is known for the Rover Pack and the Klettersack, and uses the line “Outside how you decide.™” Topo Designs bridged city and trail — proof that a distinct aesthetic can be the difference.
