The colourful challenger

Truly answered White Claw with colour.

Truly is a lesson in competing on vibrancy. Launched in 2016 by The Boston Beer Company (the public brewer behind Samuel Adams, founded by Jim Koch), it debuted as “Truly Spiked & Sparkling” and was renamed Truly Hard Seltzer around 2019 as the category term shifted. It has long been the #2 US hard seltzer behind White Claw.

Where White Claw went minimalist silver, Truly went bright and fruit-forward — colourful, flavour-coded cans, a friendly lowercase wordmark, and a big 2021 campaign with Dua Lipa (“No One Is Just One Flavor”). A 2023 packaging refresh pushed the fruit graphics and real-fruit messaging further, splitting the range into lighter and bolder flavour packs.

(Honest notes: Truly is owned by Boston Beer (not Mark Anthony); it is a fermented cane-sugar seltzer around 5% ABV, though a separate Truly Vodka line exists; it is now a distant, declining #2 as the whole category contracts; and the big redesign was 2023. No official brand hex or typeface is published.)

Colour

Truly lives in bright, fruit-forward colour. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Truly’s identity is bright, fruity and friendly — a Truly berry, a citrus orange, a tropic teal, a cream, and an ink. Unlike White Claw’s silver restraint, Truly leans into vivid, per-flavour colour and real-fruit imagery. It signals fun, flavour and approachability. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is colour is a way to differentiate from the leader. Truly’s world is a fruit bowl next to White Claw’s silver. For designers, it is a reminder that a strong #2 can carve identity by owning the opposite aesthetic — bright and fruity against the leader’s minimal cool. The takeaways: pick a lane the leader isn’t in; make flavour colour the system; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using a deep berry for small text so the brights stay loud.

Typography

The wordmark spirit is a rounded lowercase sans — friendly and bright.

Truly’s identity carries a friendly, bright, playful spirit — a rounded lowercase “truly” wordmark on colourful, fruit-forward cans. A soft rounded sans captures the mood: it is warm and casual, the register of a brand whose campaign says “no one is just one flavor.” Set against vivid fruit colour, the rounded type feels fun and approachable — exactly the colourful-challenger personality Truly carries. It is playful rather than premium, mirroring a can bursting with fruit. (Truly’s real wordmark and cans are trademarks and trade dress we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not published, so we don’t assert it.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a rounded lowercase spirit,” not the Truly logo. The type behaves like the brand: friendly, bright and easy.

Owning the opposite of the leader

Truly stands for colour.

Truly is a lesson in counter-positioning. Facing a leader that owned minimalist silver, Truly claimed the opposite — bright, fruit-forward, colourful — and backed it with a pop-star campaign and a fruit-led redesign. It couldn’t out-minimal White Claw, so it out-coloured it. The differentiator is a deliberately opposite aesthetic.

For designers and brand-builders, Truly offers a clear takeaway: a challenger should look unlike the leader. The lessons: if the leader is quiet, be vivid; build the identity around a flavour-colour system; and use culture (a Dua Lipa campaign) to amplify it. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Truly is a Boston Beer brand, a fermented cane-sugar seltzer, and now a declining #2 in a shrinking category — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Truly went colourful — proof that counter-positioning can be the difference.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Truly’s visual identity; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Truly or The Boston Beer Company. The Truly name, wordmark and cans are trademarks and trade dress of their respective owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and swatches), not Truly assets, and no wordmark or can is reproduced. Facts reported from public sources (Boston Beer Company, Wikipedia, VinePair): Truly launched in 2016 (as “Truly Spiked & Sparkling,” renamed Truly Hard Seltzer around 2019) and is made by The Boston Beer Company; it is the #2 US hard seltzer behind White Claw; it is a fermented cane-sugar seltzer around 5% ABV, with colourful, fruit-forward, flavour-coded cans and a lowercase wordmark; a 2023 refresh emphasised real-fruit graphics; the 2021 “No One Is Just One Flavor” campaign featured Dua Lipa. Honest notes: it is owned by Boston Beer (not Mark Anthony); it is fermented from cane sugar (a separate Truly Vodka line exists); it is now a declining #2 as the category contracts; and no official brand hex or typeface is published, so colours are an unofficial interpretation.
