A motor on the wringer

An insurance salesman, his uncle’s machine shop and a washer patent.

Whirlpool began as a plan to electrify a laundry machine. English Wikipedia says the Upton Machine Company was founded on 11 November 1911 by Louis Upton, then working as an insurance salesman, and his uncle Emory Upton, who owned a machine shop. Lou had acquired a patent for a hand-operated clothes washer and asked Emory whether an electric motor could be added to the design; the result was a line of electric motor-driven wringer washers. Soon after the company started, Wikipedia says, Lou’s younger brother Fred Upton joined the business. Whirlpool Corporation’s own “History & Heritage” page gives the same date, “Established November 11, 1911,” and says it all started that year in Benton Harbor, Michigan, “with a simple goal: electrify the wringer washer and improve daily life.” The page shows an Upton Machine Company electric wringer-washer that it dates to 1911.

The early years turned on a handful of customers. English Wikipedia says an early customer, the Federal Electric division of Commonwealth Edison, threatened to return its machines after a fault in the gear transmission; the washers were recalled and repaired, and the order was then doubled. When Federal Electric began producing its own washers, Upton looked for new outlets, and in 1916 it began supplying Sears, Roebuck & Co., which sold Upton wringer washers under its “Allen” brand. In 1921, the article says, Sears appointed Upton its sole supplier of washers, and Upton began marketing a washer under its own name so that it would not rely on one retailer.

In 1929 Upton merged with the Nineteen Hundred Washer Company of Binghamton, New York, and took the name Nineteen Hundred Corporation. During the Second World War, English Wikipedia says, its factories were converted to armament production.

From a Sears supplier to a name of its own.

The Whirlpool name arrived with the automatic washer. English Wikipedia says that in 1947 the company introduced an automatic, spinner-type washer sold by Sears under the Kenmore brand, and that a year later, in 1948, the company sold it under the Whirlpool brand name. In 1949 the Nineteen Hundred Corporation was renamed Whirlpool Corporation, and the same year Lou Upton retired as president and was succeeded by Elisha “Bud” Gray II. The brand had begun as one product line and became the name of the whole company within two years.

The 1950s widened the range beyond laundry. In 1955, the article says, Whirlpool acquired the Seeger Refrigerator Company together with RCA’s air-conditioner and cooking-range lines, renamed itself Whirlpool-Seeger Corporation and began using the RCA Whirlpool brand name. An administrative centre opened in Benton Harbor in 1956, and in 1957 the company introduced the RCA Whirlpool Miracle Kitchen. At the 1959 American National Exhibition in Sokolniki Park, Moscow, Whirlpool president Robert Elton Brooker presided over the Whirlpool kitchen, which English Wikipedia links to the “Kitchen Debate” between Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. In 1966 the RCA name was dropped and the brand was known simply as Whirlpool.

The company’s research work also reached space programmes. English Wikipedia says that in 1962 Whirlpool’s research laboratories won a NASA contract to develop the food and waste management system for Project Gemini, and that in 1968 the company developed freeze-dried ice cream under contract for the Apollo missions. The company’s heritage page refers to the same work as the “space kitchen” it created for NASA.

Later decades turned the brand into the centre of a group. Wikipedia records the purchase of KitchenAid from Hobart in 1986, majority control of Inglis of Canada from 1987, the Philips major-appliance business between 1988 and 1991, Brazil’s Multibrás, owner of Brastemp and Consul, in 2000, and Maytag Corporation in 2006, which brought Maytag, Jenn-Air and Amana with it. In 2011, the company’s centenary year, Wikipedia says Whirlpool unveiled a 100th anniversary logo and an updated corporate logo.

Design and documentation.

American major-appliance brands — the washers, dryers, ranges, refrigerators and dishwashers that stand in a kitchen or laundry room for many years — can carry long and layered histories. A name on the front of a machine may have started with a single workshop or inventor, then passed through several corporate owners, mergers and renamings while the badge itself stayed in place.

That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly, one by one: who started it and where, which companies have owned it and when, where its machines are made today, and how its logo, colours and advertising have changed along the way. A brand that began as an independent maker may now be one label among several inside a larger appliance group, and the same name may be used differently from one country or decade to the next.

Each guide in this group separates what independent, dated sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, its factories and its visual identity — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Whirlpool

The flagship among the company’s own brands.

Today Whirlpool is one brand among several in its parent’s portfolio, and the one that shares the parent’s name. Whirlpool Corporation’s brand page lists Whirlpool alongside KitchenAid, Maytag, JennAir and Amana for North America, Brastemp and Consul for Brazil, and InSinkErator, Gladiator and affresh among its other names. English Wikipedia places the corporate headquarters in Benton Charter Township, Michigan; the company says it was founded in Benton Harbor.

Where the appliances are made is a point the company puts at the centre of its message. Its manufacturing page is headed “Started in America. Stayed in America.” and lists United States plants by product: washers at Clyde, Ohio; dryers at Marion, Ohio; dishwashers at Findlay, Ohio; ranges at Tulsa, Oklahoma; premium cooking at Cleveland, Tennessee; refrigeration at Amana, Iowa; freezers and built-in refrigerators at Ottawa, Ohio; commercial laundry at Fall River, Massachusetts; KitchenAid small appliances at Greenville, Ohio; and InSinkErator disposers at Racine, Wisconsin. English Wikipedia adds plants in Mexico, at Apodaca, Celaya and Ramos Arizpe, and in India, at Faridabad, Puducherry and Pune.

The link with Sears also left a mark on the name. English Wikipedia says the partnership that let Whirlpool-branded appliances be sold at Sears and Kmart ended in October 2017, and that Whirlpool has continued to build appliances sold under the Kenmore name, the same retailer brand that carried the company’s automatic washer in 1947.

For a design guide, Whirlpool shows how a product name can grow into a corporate one: a washer line named in 1948 became the company the next year, and the same word now sits above KitchenAid, Maytag and JennAir as the parent of the group. Compare it with its sister brands KitchenAid and Maytag. For this guide we use laundry navy, gold dial and night enamel with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
