The Bélo & belonging

In 2014, Airbnb replaced a wordmark with a single looping symbol — and asked it to mean four things at once.

Working with the London agency DesignStudio, Airbnb launched the Bélo: a soft, hand-drawable mark designed to read simultaneously as a person (arms raised), a location pin, a heart, and the letter A — “people, places, love, and Airbnb.” It arrived under the banner “Belong Anywhere,” repositioning the company from a cheap-room marketplace to a story about belonging. The genius wasn’t the loop itself but the ambition: a symbol simple enough to sketch on a napkin, yet loaded with meaning. (When it launched, some noted it resembled other marks — proof of just how simple, and how contested, elemental shapes can be.)

Colour

Airbnb’s colour has a backstory most brands would envy: it’s named after the street where it all began. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

The signature coral is Rausch — #FF5A5F, named after 19 Rausch Street, San Francisco, where the founders hosted their first guests in 2007. Warm, welcoming and a little unexpected for a tech brand, it does the emotional work the Bélo can’t. Alongside it sits a fresh teal, Babu (#00A699), plus warm grays. (Airbnb’s app UI now leans on a punchier #FF385C, but Rausch remains the brand’s heart.) It’s a palette chosen to feel like a welcome mat, not a dashboard.

Typography

In 2018 Airbnb commissioned its own alphabet — a soft, geometric sans made to feel human at any size.

Airbnb’s brand typeface is Airbnb Cereal, a custom family drawn with the foundry Dalton Maag and released in 2018 in six weights, from Light to Black. It’s clean and geometric but gently rounded — friendly without being childish — and it gave Airbnb a single, ownable voice across dozens of languages and every screen. Commissioning a bespoke typeface is a rite of passage for a brand at global scale (Netflix, Spotify and Coca-Cola all did the same): it removes licensing costs and, more importantly, makes even plain text unmistakably yours.

A mark meant to be drawn

Airbnb’s boldest move was giving the logo away — inviting the whole world to draw its own.

At launch, Airbnb ran “Create Airbnb,” a tool that let hosts and guests draw their own version of the Bélo to represent their home or city. It reframed the logo not as a fixed asset to be policed, but as a template for belonging — thousands of personal marks, all clearly Airbnb. It was an early, influential example of a flexible, participatory identity: a brand confident enough to hand its symbol to its community and trust them with it. Risky, generous, and completely on-message for a company built on hospitality.

05

A system built for hospitality

Every part of Airbnb’s identity was tuned to do one job: make a global tech platform feel like a welcome, not a transaction.

The 2014 rebrand was never really about a symbol — it was a reframing. Airbnb had grown from a scrappy air-mattress marketplace into a hospitality company, and the identity had to signal trust between strangers. That is why the Rausch coral leans warm and human rather than corporate blue, why Airbnb Cereal is gently rounded instead of hard-edged, and why the Bélo was drawn to be sketched by anyone. Together they say belong anywhere in a visual grammar that works whether you’re a host in Lisbon or a guest in Osaka. The softness is strategic: a rounded corner and a friendly coral lower the emotional stakes of letting a stranger into your home.

What makes the system durable is how it flexes without breaking. Airbnb pairs its coral with Babu teal and warm grays, and its custom type across every weight and language, so a listing card, a help article and a billboard all feel like the same voice. The company has since evolved practical details — the app UI now favours a punchier #FF385C for buttons and legibility — yet the brand’s heart stays put. It is a useful model for any service brand: decide what feeling you are selling, then let colour, type and shape agree on it relentlessly. Airbnb sold belonging, and built a kit warm enough to mean it.
