The Regent

Five brothers and a theatre on 12th Street.

AMC Theatres traces itself to 1920 and to Kansas City, Missouri. English Wikipedia names the founders as five brothers — Maurice, William, Irvin, Edward and Barney Dubinsky — sons of immigrants who had toured the Midwest with melodramas and tent shows before buying the Regent Theatre on 12th Street in downtown Kansas City. The financial research firm Renaissance Capital, reporting on the company in September 2012, likewise described it as Kansas City-based and founded in 1920.

The family name changed before the company name did. Edward, the youngest brother, took the surname Durwood, and the business became Durwood Theatres, Wikipedia says, with houses in Kansas City, St. Joseph and Jefferson City in Missouri and in Leavenworth and Topeka in Kansas. Edward’s son Stanley Durwood joined in 1945 after service in the U.S. Air Force, pushed the family into drive-ins, and in 1947 took over the Liberty Theater downtown, remodelling it and renaming it the Roxy.

Stanley took control of the circuit in 1961. Looking for sites beyond downtown as an interstate was planned around the city, he acquired two neighbouring plots at a shopping centre on Ward Parkway and, unable to join them, opened two auditoriums side by side in 1963 as the Parkway Twin. Wikipedia quotes Variety on Durwood’s account of standing in the lobby of the Roxy and realising that a second screen could share the same staff. The Embassy 3 at the Country Club Plaza and a four-screen Metro Plaza followed in the 1960s.

The name AMC itself came out of a dispute. On 1 October 1968 Durwood renamed the company American Royal Cinema, after Kansas City’s American Royal livestock and horse show; the show’s producers sought an injunction, and the name became American Multi-Cinema, Wikipedia says. The initials have carried the brand ever since, and the company now trades as AMC Theatres, with its headquarters in Leawood, Kansas.

Stubs, Dine-In and a minute of Nicole Kidman.

AMC’s identity reaches the public less through a single logo than through a family of named services. Wikipedia dates the AMC Stubs loyalty programme to 1 April 2011; in July 2018 it was split into tiers called Insider, Premiere and A-List. Auditoriums carry partner and house names — Dolby Cinema at AMC, IMAX, and XL at AMC for extra-large standard screens — and bars in some locations trade as MacGuffins; some AMC Dine-In theatres run MacGuffins as a full-service restaurant, Wikipedia says.

The house has also had to absorb other cinema brands. After AMC bought Carmike Cinemas in 2016, chief executive Adam Aron said in March 2017 that larger Carmike sites would take the AMC name and that smaller ones would form a new banner, AMC Classic, Wikipedia says; AMC Classic keeps Carmike’s “folded film” logo and its slogan “America’s Hometown Cinemas.” At the same time Aron set out a plan to rename kitchen-equipped theatres AMC Dine-In. Some former Loews sites still use the Magic Johnson Theatres sub-brand as AMC Magic Johnson.

One piece of AMC advertising has been widely reported: a pre-show spot. In September 2021 the company began running a minute-long film in which Nicole Kidman walks through an empty AMC auditorium while her voice delivers a monologue about going to the movies. TODAY reported in August 2022 that the ad had been “heavily parodied and memed” since its debut and had inspired Change.org petitions, and quoted its lines: “We come to this place for magic,” and “Somehow, heartbreak feels good in a place like this.”

Citing Variety, TODAY reported that Aron had announced on an August 2022 earnings call that Kidman would remain the face of AMC Theatres for another year. Kidman told GQ by email that she could not say why the spot had gone viral, but that the reaction reflected people going back to cinemas, TODAY reported. The spot, played before features, put a single voice and a single empty auditorium at the centre of AMC’s advertising at the point when cinemas were reopening after pandemic closures.

Marquees, lobbies and the minute before the film.

A cinema brand is met in a particular order: first from the street, then in the lobby, then in the hand and finally in the dark. The marquee or exterior sign has to read at distance and at night, so cinema lettering tends toward bold, high-contrast forms that hold up when lit from behind or traced in neon and LED. Inside, lobby signage carries wayfinding as well as identity — screen numbers, showtimes, concession menus and directions to auditoriums — and the brand has to survive being set very large and very small in the same room.

Tickets, whether printed stubs or phone screens, compress the identity into a narrow strip where a wordmark, a colour and a short code must all stay legible. Popcorn tubs and drink cups do the opposite: they wrap the mark around a curved surface that is photographed, carried and left on seats, so a single strong colour and a repeated pattern can carry further than fine detail.

The pre-show ident or policy trailer is the one place a cinema brand moves on the big screen. It typically sets tone through animation, sound and a short line of copy before the feature, and it often carries house rules about phones and talking in a voice that matches the rest of the identity.

Archivo Black is a STAND-IN chosen for its heavy, signage-like letterforms; it is NOT the AMC Theatres logo or a typeface the company is documented to use.

AMC Theatres

From a family circuit to a listed company.

Ownership has moved several times. AMC went public in 1983, Wikipedia says. In 2012 the Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group, based in Dalian, bought the company; Renaissance Capital reported on 5 September 2012 that AMC had withdrawn its planned initial public offering following the acquisition. The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker AMC, and Wikipedia says Wanda held a controlling position until February 2021, when it converted its Class B shares to Class A, giving up its majority voting power; the private-equity firm Silver Lake had invested in AMC in September 2018.

Through those changes the name stayed constant. American Multi-Cinema had been chosen in a hurry after a trade dispute, yet its initials have outlived the Durwood name, the Regent, the Roxy and the Parkway Twin. Wikipedia says Stanley Durwood was succeeded in 1999 by Peter Brown, who led the company for more than a decade, and that Gerardo I. Lopez followed Brown as president and chief executive in March 2009; Adam Aron was chief executive at the time of the 2017 Carmike rebranding and the 2022 Kidman renewal.

For a design guide, AMC Theatres shows how a cinema brand is carried by sub-brands, loyalty tiers and a single memorable pre-show film as much as by a mark. Compare Regal Cinemas, another American circuit, and IMAX, whose name appears on AMC auditoriums. For this guide we use a marquee red, auditorium black and screen white with a heavy sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
