Beko Brand Guidelines
Two surnames, one short word and a Turkish appliance name sent abroad.

Bejerano and Koç
A canning plan, two surnames and a name that stuck.
Beko’s name is older than its appliances. The history page of Beko’s Turkish website, as archived in May 2015, says that in the 1950s Vehbi Koç, the founder of Koç Holding, was looking for a product that could earn Turkey foreign currency, and went into partnership with a man named Bejerano, who had experience in the field, to invest in a tomato-paste and canning factory. The company was founded in 1954, that page says, and its name was registered as Beko by joining the first two letters of the two surnames: Bejerano and Koç. English and Turkish Wikipedia both repeat the derivation; their infoboxes give 1955 as the founding year, so the dates differ by a year between sources.
The canning business never started. The same archived history says conditions in the country kept the company from operating, and that when an opportunity arose to sell and set up dealerships for General Electric light bulbs, the canning company was renamed Beko Ticaret A.Ş. Through it, the page says, Vehbi Koç built a dealer network across Anatolia that also carried Arçelik appliances to customers’ homes. In 1977, it says, Beko Ticaret passed the Arçelik distribution to another company, Atılım, and from 1983 it began trading in Turkish white goods under the Beko name itself.
Arçelik, the manufacturer behind the brand, has its own date. The corporate history published by the group today begins in 1955 with the establishment of Arçelik in Sütlüce, Istanbul, then lists a refrigerator plant at Eskişehir in 1975, a compressor plant there in 1977 and a dishwasher plant in Ankara in 1993.

The brand’s turn outward came in the 1990s. The archived Beko history says that as Koç Holding’s durable-goods group looked abroad, Beko was chosen as its export brand, and that in 2000 a restructuring of the group took Beko out of Beko Ticaret A.Ş. and placed it, alongside the Arçelik brand, under Arçelik A.Ş. The group’s corporate timeline adds that in 2001 it started the domestic marketing and sales of the Beko brand in Turkey.
Acquisitions followed in the 2000s, and the corporate timeline records them year by year. In 2002 the group bought the Austrian company elektrabregenz and the German maker Blomberg, took on the British brands Leisure and Flavel, and acquired the Romanian refrigerator company Arctic. In 2007 it bought Grundig Multimedia and the Grundig brand; English Wikipedia, citing CNN, says Beko Elektronik had first bought into Grundig in 2004. The same timeline lists the opening of a Beko refrigerator and washing-machine plant in Russia in 2006, a Beko washing-machine plant in China in 2007 and a dryer plant at Çerkezköy, in Tekirdağ, in 2008.
The next decade widened the map. The corporate timeline lists the South African appliance maker Defy in 2011, a refrigerator plant in Thailand in 2015 and the Pakistani producer Dawlance in 2016. In 2017 it signed a partnership with Voltas, a Tata group company, and in 2018 it launched the Voltas Beko brand in India and broke ground on a refrigerator plant there; Mint reported the joint venture on 24 May 2017. A joint venture with Hitachi in home appliances followed in 2021, the same year the timeline lists the acquisition of a Whirlpool factory at Manisa.
The most recent structural change came in 2024. The timeline records the completion of a contribution agreement between Arçelik’s wholly owned subsidiary Beko B.V. and a Whirlpool Corporation subsidiary, creating Beko Europe. Beko Europe’s own website says the company was established in 2024 by agreement between Arçelik and Whirlpool, with Arçelik as the majority owner and Whirlpool holding the remaining stake, and lists production sites at Cassinetta, Melano, Comunanza and Siena in Italy; Wroclaw, Radomsko and Lodz in Poland; Poprad in Slovakia; and Ulmi and Gaesti in Romania.

The brands in this group all make major appliances for the home: cookers and ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers and laundry machines. European and global appliance brands sit at many different points in the trade, from family companies that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger industrial groups, and a single name can appear on products built in several countries for different markets.
An appliance brand’s identity is usually carried less by one machine than by a badge, a name and the look of a range, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, merged with a rival, been bought by a group abroad or moved its factories over the decades. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its appliances are actually made.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its appliances are made and how its marks have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Beko
A logo redrawn for a football shirt.
The Beko wordmark has been redrawn several times. English Wikipedia’s gallery of former logos dates one version to 1955–1986, another to 1986–1993 and a third to 1993–2014, and says the company updated its logo in June 2014, citing an FC Barcelona announcement of that month. The timing matters: the group’s corporate timeline says that in 2014 Beko signed a four-year partnership with FC Barcelona, and that in 2018 the partnership was extended for three more years, so the new mark reached a global audience through football.
Sport has long carried the name. English Wikipedia, citing The Drum, says Beko was the shirt sponsor of the Istanbul club Beşiktaş from 1988 to 2004, and lists sponsorships of the Turkish, Italian and Lithuanian basketball leagues and of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain. Netball New Zealand announced in February 2016 that Beko would back its new National Netball League, which English Wikipedia says it sponsored until 2020.
Today the corporate structure and the brand share a name. The group’s corporate website, at bekocorporate.com, presents itself as Beko and lists Arçelik, Beko, Grundig, Arctic, Leisure, Hotpoint and Indesit among its brands, with Whirlpool and Ariston marked as licences in certain jurisdictions; English Wikipedia describes the brand as belonging to Arçelik A.Ş., which is controlled by Koç Holding. On its brands page the group describes Beko as a global brand of white goods, domestic appliances, air conditioning units and electronics.
For a design guide, Beko shows how a coined name can outlive the business it was coined for: a word built from two surnames for a canning company now sits on refrigerators, washing machines and a European appliance group. Compare it with Electrolux, the Swedish appliance group, and with Bosch home appliances. For this guide we use navy, signal blue and cool white with a rounded geometric sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
