From pies to pickles
A grocery store, a baker and a jar of mayonnaise.
Best Maid is a pickle brand from Fort Worth, Texas. English Wikipedia describes it as an American brand of pickles owned by the Dalton family, founded by Jesse Otis and Mildred Dalton in 1926, and says the company is still owned and operated by the family in Fort Worth. The Fort Worth Report, in a “Made in Tarrant” interview published on 21 October 2023, gave the same founders, the same year and the same city, and said the company is still run by the Dalton family.
The company’s own account of its beginnings, given to the Fort Worth Report by Elizabeth Dalton, its community outreach director, starts not with pickles but with pies. She said the family had the J.O. Dalton Grocery Store in Fort Worth, at 8th and Magnolia, in the early 1920s, and that Mildred was a baker whose pies sold well in the store. Left with spare egg yolks, Elizabeth Dalton said, Mildred made mayonnaise, around 1924 or 1925. The mayonnaise sold well enough that the family created Mrs. Dalton’s Salad Dressings and sold it door to door as well as in the grocery store.
Next, by the company’s account, came a sandwich spread: a mayonnaise-based spread with a mild chili seasoning and relish, which the company says it still makes under that name. At first Mildred bought the relish from a supplier. Elizabeth Dalton said that shortly before the Great Depression the supplier raised its prices, and Mildred decided to grow her own cucumbers on family land in Mansfield, pickle them and make her own relish. She grew more cucumbers than the relish needed, and the company says that surplus is how it got into dill pickles.
The Fort Worth Report said the company now sells pickles, pickle juice and brine, salad dressing, sandwich spread, mayonnaise, barbecue sauce and Worcestershire sauce.

A family business, a seed-to-jar process and two Texas towns.
Best Maid has stayed with the family that started it. Wikipedia says the company is still owned and operated by the Dalton family in Fort Worth. The Fort Worth Report said in 2023 that the president and chief financial officer was Brian Dalton, a great-grandson of Jesse Otis Dalton, and that the fourth generation of the family was running the company. Best Maid has been owned by the Dalton family since its founding in 1926.
The company describes its production as running from field to jar. Elizabeth Dalton told the Fort Worth Report that Best Maid is a vertically integrated business that controls everything “from the seed to the jar.” She said planting takes place in West Texas from the end of June and harvesting usually begins in the first week of October; the cucumbers are washed and sorted by size and then trucked to Fort Worth or Mansfield.
By her account the company makes two kinds of pickle. Cucumbers for what she called process pickles go to Mansfield or to the company’s tanking yard, where they are cured in a salt brine before being flavoured and packed; she said the change from cucumber to pickle takes about six weeks in summer. Cucumbers for fresh pack pickles go straight to the packing facility in Fort Worth, where they turn into pickles in the jar, and she said they have to be packed within about one to two days.
The link to Mansfield has given the town a nickname. Wikipedia says that because of the company’s operations in nearby Mansfield, Texas, the city is known as the “Pickle Capital of Texas” and holds an annual Pickle Parade on St. Patrick’s Day.
Typography
Design and documentation.
The brands in this group are all American pickle names. Pickle brands in general reach people through a glass jar more than through any other object: a cylinder of brine, cucumbers and spice that sits on a shelf or in a chilled case, with a paper or printed label and a metal lid. Some pickles are sold shelf-stable in the ordinary grocery aisle, while others are kept refrigerated from the plant to the store, and that choice shapes where a jar is placed, how it is shipped and how the label has to read from a distance.
Because brine and cucumbers look much the same from one jar to the next, much of a pickle brand’s identity is carried by the label, the lid, the colour of the type and sometimes a mascot or a slogan. Many pickle names began as regional brands sold close to the farms and plants that supplied them, and some have since passed to national food companies. The questions worth asking are plain ones: who started it, who owns it now, and where the pickles are packed.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what a company says about itself, and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

A shop for the jar
An emporium, a family story and a brand built around a jar.
One piece of Best Maid’s brand-building outside the jar is a shop. Wikipedia says the company opened a gift shop named the Pickle Emporium on 23 October 2020. In the 2023 Fort Worth Report interview, Elizabeth Dalton described the Emporium as more than a place to buy products: she called it a small history museum and learning centre, with memorabilia, the story of the owners and of the move “from pies to pickles,” and videos showing different parts of the company’s operations. She also said the company does not run factory tours.
The company’s own account puts the family first: a grocery store, a baker, a jar of mayonnaise, a field in Mansfield and four generations of Daltons. Its products run from dressings and sandwich spread to dill pickles, juice and brine.
The place names matter to the identity as well. Best Maid is tied to Fort Worth, where it was founded and where the family still runs it, and to Mansfield, where Mildred Dalton first grew cucumbers and where the company still has operations. The town’s Pickle Parade on St. Patrick’s Day carries the connection beyond the company’s own premises.
For a design guide, Best Maid shows how a regional pickle brand can make its family history and its home towns part of the identity, from the jar on the shelf to a shop that doubles as a small museum. Compare it with Mt. Olive and Vlasic, two other American pickle names. For this guide we use pickle green, dark dill, brine gold and brick red with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
