Burel Factory Brand Guidelines
The fulled wool.

Two constants: a blue-and-red palette and a mountain sans register. Abstract homage — not the Burel Factory textiles, pattern or packaging.
The fulled wool
Burel Factory revives a mountain wool.
Burel Factory is a lesson in reviving a heritage material. Burel is a traditional Portuguese wool cloth from the Serra da Estrela mountains — wool that is beaten and scalded (fulled) until it is dense, durable and warm, historically made into weatherproof shepherds’ capes.
Its identity is fulled wool, made modern. Burel Factory (also Burel Mountain Originals) takes this mountain material and reworks it into contemporary design — blankets and throws, cushions and poufs, rugs, fabric by the metre in more than eighty colours, and acoustic wall panels — in bold geometric patterns and vivid colour, on a mission to recover ancestral processes. A dense mountain wool, turned into modern design.
(Honest notes: “burel” is the traditional material and technique — centuries old, from the Serra da Estrela — while Burel Factory is one modern brand working in it, so we don’t imply the brand invented or owns the material. Burel’s dense, fulled construction gives it real properties (durable, thermal, naturally fire-resistant, sound-absorbing); “water-resistant” we hedge lightly. The company also runs two mountain hotels. Its founders (reported as João Tomás and Isabel Costa), founding year (~2010–11) and the exact revived mill we treat as reported, and we place production in the Serra da Estrela (Manteigas is widely reported). There’s no official brand hex, and we reproduce no actual burel pattern — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
Burel Factory lives in a blue-and-red palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Burel Factory’s identity is bold, mountain and Portuguese — a burel blue, an ink, a red, a gold, and a wool grey. The palette pairs a blue with a red — the register of bold, geometric burel design. It signals colour and heritage rather than novelty. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a blue with a red signals a burel house. Burel Factory’s world is a dense, colourful wool. For designers, it is a reminder that reviving a near-forgotten material — and giving it bold, modern colour — can be a whole identity. Because a mid blue can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: revive a material; be bold with colour and pattern; extend it (even to acoustic panels); and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a mountain sans — bold, natural, Portuguese.
Burel Factory’s identity carries a bold, natural, Portuguese spirit — a dense mountain wool. A characterful geometric sans captures the mood: it is confident and modern, the register of heritage-made-contemporary. Set in a blue-and-red palette, the mountain sans feels bold and natural — exactly the personality Burel Factory carries. It is graphic rather than plain, mirroring bold burel patterns. (Burel Factory’s real textiles, patterns and wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a mountain sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: bold, natural and Portuguese.

Reviving a heritage material
Burel Factory stands for fulled mountain wool.
Burel Factory is a lesson in making a revived material the identity. A blue-and-red palette, a mountain sans and a dense wool cloth make burel the whole brand — bold, natural, Portuguese. The material is the differentiator. The differentiator is a heritage mountain wool, reworked into modern design.
For designers and brand-builders, Burel Factory offers a clear takeaway: revive a material and modernise it. The lessons: revive a material; be bold with colour; extend the applications; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: burel is a traditional Serra da Estrela wool (the brand works in it rather than owning it), its founding details are reported, and it’s made in the Serra da Estrela — the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Burel Factory made a mountain wool the brand — proof that a revived material can be the difference.
