Texas, 1947

A cleansing lotion that gave its name to a range.

Cetaphil begins with a single product. Galderma, the Swiss company that owns the brand, says on its corporate website that Cetaphil was invented in 1947 by a pharmacist in Texas, and that the first product was called Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion. The same lotion, Galderma says, is known today as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. The brand’s Philippine website tells the story in similar words: it describes “humble Texan roots,” a pharmacist who designed the product for patients, a launch in 1947 and a first product that was later renamed. None of the company’s pages give the pharmacist’s name, and the brand’s own story rests on that unnamed figure and on the date.

English Wikipedia describes Cetaphil as a line of skin-care products from Galderma that includes cleansers, bar soap, cream, lotion and moisturisers, and says it was developed in 1947 in Texas, citing the brand’s own “Cetaphil Story” page. The encyclopedia gives two pronunciations, one beginning like “see” and one like “set.” Its infobox places the brand in Fort Worth, Texas, and the brand’s 2021 press release carried a Fort Worth dateline.

For decades the formula itself changed little. When Galderma announced new versions of its core products in September 2021, June Risser, then vice president and general manager of the consumer business at Galderma, said in the company’s release that the brand had decided “to upgrade some of our original products, most of which haven’t changed since they were first brought to market.” Wikipedia, citing Practical Dermatology, records that the 2021 formulas added niacinamide, panthenol and glycerin to ingredient lists that had stayed close to the original for many years.

The range that grew around the cleanser is still built from a handful of plainly named products. The 2021 release lists five of them as the brand’s most prominent: Gentle Skin Cleanser, Daily Facial Cleanser, Moisturizing Cream, Moisturizing Lotion and Advanced Relief Lotion. Each name describes what the product is rather than giving it a separate sub-brand, and the word Cetaphil leads every one of them.

From a Dallas dermatology company to Nestlé, investors and the Swiss exchange.

The company that owns Cetaphil today has its own long history. English Wikipedia, citing Dallas Innovates, traces Galderma’s origins to the Owen dermatology company, founded in Dallas in 1961, and says that Nestlé, which had ambitions in dermatology, bought the Owen laboratory at the end of the 1970s. Le Quotidien du Pharmacien, in a history of Galderma, likewise describes Nestlé bringing the Owen dermatology laboratory into its group. At about the same time L’Oréal founded a dermatology research centre at Sophia Antipolis in the south of France.

The two companies joined forces in 1981. Galderma’s own timeline lists that year as the foundation of Galderma as a joint venture between L’Oréal and Nestlé, and places it after “the invention of the first Cetaphil formulation in 1947.” The timeline records first commercial operations in 1986 and the opening of a production site at Baie-D’Urfé, near Montreal in Canada, in 2000, followed by a site at Hortolândia in Brazil in 2004.

In 2014 Nestlé took full control. Galderma’s timeline says that Nestlé Skin Health was founded that year and that Galderma became a wholly owned subsidiary of Nestlé; Wikipedia, citing WWD of 11 February 2014, says Nestlé paid L’Oréal with L’Oréal shares. In 2019 Nestlé sold the business. Wikipedia, citing Reuters of 16 May 2019, says the buyers were a consortium led by the EQT VIII fund, alongside Luxinva, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and PSP Investments. Galderma’s timeline describes the company that year as debuting independently after its acquisition by a consortium of institutional investors.

The last step was a listing. Galderma’s shares began trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange on 22 March 2024, Wikipedia says, citing Reuters and WWD. Wikipedia gives the company’s headquarters as Zug, Switzerland. Galderma has owned Cetaphil throughout these changes; in the United States the brand’s website credits Galderma Laboratories, L.P., and its press releases are issued from Fort Worth.

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group are all drugstore skin-care names: cleansers, lotions, creams and ointments sold from the same pharmacy and supermarket shelves. Most began with a single product, often a jar, a tube or a bottle of lotion, and grew into ranges that now sit inside much larger consumer-goods or pharmaceutical groups, sometimes after passing through several owners along the way.

On the shelf, these brands tend to speak a shared visual language. White or pale packaging, plain sans-serif type and short descriptive product names are common, alongside squat jars, pump bottles and squeezable tubes. Many ranges use colour codes to separate one product line from another, so that a band of blue, green or teal does much of the work a picture would do elsewhere. Because the same product is often sold in many countries, the brand name usually has to work on its own, in several languages, without a picture to help it.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its products are made and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Cetaphil

An updated logo and colour coding by skin type.

The most clearly documented change to Cetaphil’s look came in 2021. In a release issued through PR Newswire from Fort Worth on 22 September 2021, the brand said it was unveiling “a new look and feel consisting of an updated logo and sleeker, more modern packaging that features color coding for specified skin types.” The company presented the colour coding as a way of making shopping easier, so that the packaging sorts the range by the skin type each product is meant for.

The same release shows the range widening under the one name. It describes a move into sun care with a Sheer Mineral collection, a Gentle Clear collection and a Healthy Radiance collection. Each arrived as a named collection beneath the Cetaphil wordmark rather than as a new brand, which is how the identity has stretched from one cleanser to a full range.

Packaging also became part of the story the company tells. The 2021 release says the reformulated cleansers and lotions were housed in packaging that is “in-part recyclable,” and Galderma presented the new formulas, the new logo and the colour-coded packs together as one relaunch.

The name has stayed constant through all of this. Galderma’s corporate page sets it in capitals, as CETAPHIL, in the opening line of its brand description, while the brand’s websites and releases use the ordinary capitalised form. Ownership has moved from a Nestlé and L’Oréal joint venture to Nestlé alone, then to an investor consortium and finally to a listed Swiss company, but the 1947 date and the Texas origin story still lead the brand’s descriptions on Galderma’s corporate site and the Philippine Cetaphil site.

For a design guide, Cetaphil shows how a single product name can grow into a range by adding plain descriptive product names and, since 2021, a colour code for skin types, while the coined word stays at the centre. Compare it with Eucerin and Lubriderm. For this guide we use pharmacy blue and soft sky on bottle white with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
