A garage in Los Angeles

A painter’s candles, a boutique and a wholesale business.

ILLUME began in Los Angeles, not in the Minnesota suburbs where it later made its candles. The company’s own history page, as archived in December 2008, said that Lynette Reed “began making Illume candles in her LA garage” and that the business had been making candles since the mid-1990s. She wanted, the page said, a candle she could smell in the room whether it was burning or simply sitting among the home’s decor. From the garage the business moved into a small boutique in West Hollywood, and the same page summed up the founder’s aim as “vibrant colors and unique fragrances.”

By 2008 the company was already describing Reed as a former owner, while still saying its candles were “hand poured in LA.” Its website at that time listed boxed glass candles, metallic tins, mini glass jars, classic jars, pillars, votive sets and reed diffusers, alongside a natural-wax line, and said the brand was sold online, in spas, gift shops, boutiques and department stores, as well as making private-label merchandise for other retailers. Fragrance names on that archived site included Balsam & Cedar and Coconut Milk Mango, both of which the brand still sells.

The brand marked its 30th anniversary in 2024. In November that year the Minneapolis television station Fox 9 reported that ILLUME was celebrating 30 years in the home-fragrance market with a warehouse sale at its headquarters in Maple Grove, Minnesota, and that its candles were sold locally at Whole Foods, Patina and Kowalski’s and nationally through Anthropologie, Madewell and West Elm.

Private label, a Memphis parent and a plant that closed.

ILLUME has long made candles for other brands as well as its own. The Twin Cities station KSTP, in a “Good Company” feature filmed inside the Maple Grove facility, said the company made private-label candles for names including Anthropologie and West Elm, while also selling its own brand through independent shops.

Ownership changed in April 2016. The law firm Jones Day records that it represented the private-equity firm Sycamore Hill Capital Group in its sale of Illume to Regent Holding Co. Cosmetics Business reported on 21 April 2016 that Regent was a wholesaler of home décor sold under the trade brands Creative Co-Op in the United States and Bloomingville in Europe, and that Illume then sold candles, diffusers, perfume and bath and body products in the United States and abroad. Regent’s chief executive, Eugene Wang, said Illume’s “unique combination of design expertise along with top-notch manufacturing capabilities” fitted Regent’s strategy; Liz Barrere stayed on as president and chief executive, and said, “We’re forming a super group.”

In September 2025 the company filed a notice under the federal WARN Act that it would close its Maple Grove plant. CCX Media reported on 17 September 2025 that the first layoffs would take effect on 1 December, and that manufacturing at the plant would end by 1 February 2026, with order fulfilment continuing for several months. Vice-president of human resources Cassandra Sink said the move was “necessitated by deteriorating overall business conditions.” The station said ILLUME had moved its headquarters to Maple Grove in 2019, that its parent, Creative Co-Op of Memphis, Tennessee, would continue to market and distribute ILLUME products, and that manufacturing would move to outside partners which the company says will meet the same quality standards. Sink said the closure would not affect Good Chemistry, ILLUME’s personal-care brand.

Design and documentation.

The seven brands in this group are all candle and home-fragrance names: Glade, Bath & Body Works, Chesapeake Bay Candle, Bolsius, ILLUME, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day and Price’s Candles. Candle and home-fragrance brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from small studios that still pour by hand to names that now belong to much larger household-goods groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a supermarket aisle to a boutique shelf.

A candle brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single candle than by a jar, a label, a scent name and the story printed on the box, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its candles are actually made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its candles are made and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

ILLUME

Artist founded, artist-led.

In recent years ILLUME has tied its look more closely to its founder’s other career. To mark its 30th anniversary, the company says, it introduced the first instalment of an “Artist Founded, Artist-Led” collection, decorated with the abstract paintings of Lynette Reed. The brand describes Reed as a painter who “once upon a time founded our beloved ILLUME brand,” and says she returned to painting during the pandemic lockdown. The collection is presented as a series of rotating, limited-edition artist collaborations, chosen, the company says, for their view of art as self-expression.

The second artist named on the brand’s website is Meenal Patel, whose designs appear on glass candles, tins and boxed votives. On the company’s collaboration page she says the project was an opportunity to try “a form of storytelling that includes a sensory element,” combining smell and visual art to connect with a memory and a place. The website’s own wording sums up the brand in one line — “We bring beauty to life, through fragrance” — and its candle and diffuser formulas, the company says, are PETA-certified, cruelty-free and vegan. The same pages carry a “Designed & Manufactured in the USA” badge, which is the company’s own claim.

The range the brand sells has stayed recognisable across three decades. Boxed glass candles, tins, reed diffusers, refills and hand soap and lotion sit on the current website, and fragrances such as Balsam & Cedar, Coconut Milk Mango and Woodfire are listed as favourites; the website also carries a Pura x ILLUME collection.

For a design guide, ILLUME shows how a candle brand can turn its founder’s own artwork into its packaging, a generation after she left the business. Compare Thymes, another fragrance house rooted in Minnesota, and Voluspa, a Southern California candle maker. For this guide we use plum, amber and wax cream with a geometric sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
