Stockholm, 1996

A fashion label with golf in its first collection.

J.Lindeberg was founded in Stockholm in 1996 by Johan Lindeberg, who had been marketing director of the Italian denim brand Diesel, according to English and Swedish Wikipedia. English Wikipedia says the brand launched in Stockholm and New York at the same time in the summer of 1996, though its information box gives 1997; the company gives 1996, and in January 2026 it marked its 30th anniversary at the PGA Show, according to a release published by The First Call.

The first collection, called “21st Century Lifestyle,” was shown at New York Fashion Week for autumn/winter 1997 and covered both men’s fashion and golf clothing, English Wikipedia says. Golf was there from the start: the company’s 2026 anniversary release says the brand began with the aim of bringing style and energy to golf by changing how players dress on and off the course, and a 2021 FashionUnited report, citing WWD, described it as having begun as a golf brand before expanding into skiwear and casual fashion. English Wikipedia says Roland Hjort, recruited from H&M, headed the first design team.

To develop the golf side, Lindeberg turned to a friend, the Swedish touring professional Jesper Parnevik, Swedish Wikipedia says. In June 2026 Golf Retailing reported that J.Lindeberg was marking its 30 years with a capsule collection honouring Parnevik as its first ambassador.

The range then widened. Swedish Wikipedia dates a women’s collection to 2002 and the first ski collection to 2003; English Wikipedia names the Swedish freeskier Jon Olsson as the face of the ski line from the autumn/winter 2005 season. English Wikipedia also says the first flagship store opened in central Stockholm in 2000, and that the brand first showed in the New York Fashion Week tents at Bryant Park in 2002.

Owners, relaunches and a touring professional.

J.Lindeberg has changed hands as well as direction. In 2007, after falling profitability had strained relations with its main shareholders, the investment company Proventus became principal owner and Stefan Engström, a co-founder of Peak Performance, became chief executive, English Wikipedia says; Swedish Wikipedia names Proventus and Engström together as the new main owners that year.

In October 2011 FashionUnited reported that a group of private investors — Allan Warburg, Dan Friis and Anders Holch Povlsen, the owner of the fashion group Bestseller — had taken over the brand, with the managing director Jonas Meerits and Engström staying on as co-owners. Daniel Sachs of Proventus said then that, after a successful restructuring, J.Lindeberg was ready for a new future. The same report said the brand ran its own stores in cities including Stockholm, Copenhagen, Kitzbühel, New York and Seoul, and was sold through golf and ski shops abroad. English and Swedish Wikipedia date that group’s ownership from 2012, and both list Engström among the owners.

Several relaunches followed. The 2021 FashionUnited report, citing WWD, said the founder had come back for two years — English Wikipedia dates his return, as a creative consultant, to January 2016 — and that a 2019 relaunch had been led by Jans Werner, formerly of Tory Sport. It said a further relaunch in autumn 2021 would be led by the chief executive Hans-Christian Meyer, previously of Ralph Lauren and Tiger of Sweden, with the designer Neil Lewty, formerly of Hugo Boss and Tommy Hilfiger. Meyer was still chief executive in the January 2026 anniversary release, and Golf Retailing named Lewty as chief creative officer in June 2026.

On the course, the brand’s best-known face today is the Norwegian professional Viktor Hovland, an ambassador since 2019. On 1 January 2025 J.Lindeberg said it had extended the partnership for another three years, quoting Hovland: “J.Lindeberg has been with me through some of the biggest moments in my career.” In June 2026 Golf Retailing reported that Hovland had won his eighth PGA Tour title, at the Travelers Championship, in J.Lindeberg clothing, and that he and Niklas Nørgaard had worn the Parnevik anniversary capsule at the 126th U.S. Open.

Golf clothing, from the rainproof to the runway.

The seven brands in this group are all golf clothing names: Peter Millar, TravisMathew, Greyson, Holderness & Bourne, J.Lindeberg, Galvin Green and Linksoul. Five are American and two, J.Lindeberg and Galvin Green, are Swedish. Golf apparel brands sit at many different points in the trade, from founder-run labels that still carry a founder’s name or story to brands that now belong to larger golf, fashion or investment groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a club’s pro shop to a city department store.

A golf clothing brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single garment than by a name, a small logo on a chest or a cap, and the kind of player it promises to dress, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its design studio or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its clothing is designed and made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its clothing is made and how its marks have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

J.Lindeberg

Golf, ski, racket sports and ready-to-wear.

Today J.Lindeberg presents itself as a global sportswear and lifestyle brand spanning golf, skiing, racket sports and ready-to-wear, with its head office and design team in Stockholm, according to English Wikipedia and the company’s 2026 release. That release said its American green-grass sales — sales to golf-club pro shops — had been brought in-house on 1 January, and quoted Meyer: “Our 30th anniversary is not just a milestone—it’s a launchpad for the future.” The same release described an autumn/winter 2026 collection combining sport, fashion and culture, and listed showrooms in Stockholm, Oslo, London, New York, Munich, Salzburg and Zürich.

The brand writes its name as J.Lindeberg, with no space after the initial, on its own website and in its releases; trade headlines, including FashionUnited’s, often add one. The global site is jlindeberg.com, with a separate American storefront at jlindebergusa.com.

For a design guide, J.Lindeberg shows how a golf brand can be built from fashion outward, with a touring professional in its first collection and a fashion week as its launch. Compare Galvin Green, the Swedish golf-clothing company founded six years earlier in Växjö, and Peter Millar. For this guide we use black, white and a cool slate with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
