Växjö, 1990

A clothing company for golf and nothing else.

Galvin Green was founded in 1990 in Växjö, in southern Sweden, by Tomas Nilsson, whom the company’s 30th-anniversary announcement in July 2020 described as an entrepreneur and recreational golfer. Its own history page says it was set up as a high-performance clothing company dedicated solely to golf. Växjö, which promotes itself as “Europe’s Greenest City,” Golf Business News noted in 2020, is still its home. The anniversary coverage dated the company’s 30th birthday to July 2020.

The first range was put together in the summer of 1990 by Mats Lundqvist, the company’s creative director, according to Golf Business News and the Canadian magazine Inside Golf. Galvin Green says Nilsson and Lundqvist went looking for waterproof technology and settled on the Gore-Tex membrane. Its timeline dates the first Gore-Tex and Windstopper garments to 1992, the same year, it says, that its waterproof range gained bright reds, blues and other colours.

Both men explained the thinking in the 2020 anniversary coverage. Lundqvist put the design rule plainly: “I learned how important it was to have a specific function for each garment and explain it to the users.” Nicholai Stein, then chief executive, said the brand had “become something of a household name in golf more quickly than first envisaged.”

Layers, one problem at a time.

The company’s own timeline reads as a series of technical steps. It lists its first three-layer Windstopper garments in 1996, half-zip waterproof jackets in 1998 and, in 2003, lightweight Gore-Tex Paclite garments without pockets; Golf Business News wrote in 2020 that the Paclite jacket let golfers wear a lightweight waterproof without it affecting the swing.

In 2004 came what the company calls its Multi-Layer Concept, built around INSULA warm layers and SKINTIGHT base layers. The timeline goes on to full-stretch waterproof jackets and trousers in 2007, VENTIL8 shirts, trousers and shorts in 2010, four-way stretch in its flagship waterproofs in 2011, the INTERFACE-1 hybrid jacket and a waterproof line called EDGE in 2018, SHAKEDRY waterproof technology in 2019 and, in 2024, a DRYVR waterproof collection using Gore-Tex and Pertex. Individual garments carry first names, such as the Dwight sweater, which the 2020 anniversary coverage said was made from recycled plastic bottles.

The Ryder Cup gave the brand its biggest stage. English Wikipedia, citing Golf Monthly, says Galvin Green was a licensee of Ryder Cup Europe with an exclusive collection for the 2014 match at Gleneagles in Scotland. The company says it was Official Weatherwear Supplier to the European team in 2016 and 2018, and Golf Business News reported that the outerwear for the European team in Paris in 2018 was developed with its captain, Thomas Bjørn; the company says that year also brought a superstretch waterproof jacket made for the match.

It has dressed professional associations too. English Wikipedia lists the company as official clothing supplier to the PGA of Germany — one of that association’s partners — and to the PGA of Denmark from 2009, and records a multi-year agreement with the PGA of Canada signed in March 2013 — the year in which, citing a company release, it says Galvin Green first entered the American market.

Golf clothing, from the rainproof to the runway.

The seven brands in this group are all golf clothing names: Peter Millar, TravisMathew, Greyson, Holderness & Bourne, J.Lindeberg, Galvin Green and Linksoul. Five are American and two, J.Lindeberg and Galvin Green, are Swedish. Golf apparel brands sit at many different points in the trade, from founder-run labels that still carry a founder’s name or story to brands that now belong to larger golf, fashion or investment groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a club’s pro shop to a city department store.

A golf clothing brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single garment than by a name, a small logo on a chest or a cap, and the kind of player it promises to dress, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its design studio or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its clothing is designed and made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its clothing is made and how its marks have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Galvin Green

Still in the founding family.

Galvin Green has stayed with its founder. In September 2025 Golf Retailing reported that the board had appointed Martin Nilsson, the son of the owner, Tomas Nilsson, as chief executive, succeeding Nicholai Stein, who had led the company since January 2020. Martin Nilsson had started part-time in the warehouse more than twenty years earlier, helped establish the brand in the UK in 2009 and helped build its American subsidiary, the magazine said. “I am honoured to follow in my family’s footsteps and lead Galvin Green into the future,” he said.

On sourcing, the company says its shipments come from suppliers “across the world” and are combined and sent on to Europe or the United States, that suppliers must sign a mandatory code of conduct, and that its materials hold certifications such as bluesign and OEKO-TEX; Golf Business News reported in 2020 that its fabric suppliers worked under the bluesign system. For the American market, the company says, goods go to a distribution centre near the Port of Miami. Its timeline says a sustainability programme began in 2012 and that in 2023 it adopted the UN Global Goals as the framework for its environmental, social and governance strategy. Its American business, Galvin Green US Inc., is based in Alpharetta, Georgia, and the brand’s website is galvingreen.com.

For a design guide, Galvin Green shows a brand built around one problem — playing golf in bad weather — and a habit of naming each answer. Compare J.Lindeberg, the Stockholm brand that came to golf from fashion six years later, and Holderness & Bourne. For this guide we use a deep green, navy and a signal blue with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
